Essential Oils for Lyme Disease

Doxycycline , cefuroxime and daptomycin were dissolved in suitable solvents to form 5 mg/ml stock solutions. The antibiotic stocks were filter-sterilized by 0.2 μm filter and stored at â20°C. Essential oils were also dissolved in organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide at 20%, followed by dilution to achieve desired dilutions as previously described .

Evaluation Of Essential Oils For Their Activities Against B Burgdorferi Stationary Phase Cultures

To evaluate the possible activity of the essential oils against stationary phase B. burgdorferi, 10% DMSO-soluble essential oils or aqueous suspension of DMSO-insoluble essential oils were added to 100 µL of the seven-day old stationary phase B. burgdorferi culture in 96-well plate to obtain the desired concentrations. In the primary screen, each essential oil was assayed with final concentrations of 0.2% and 0.1% in 96-well plates. Drugs of daptomycin, doxycycline, and cefuroxime were used as control with final concentration of 40 μM. The active hits were checked further with lower concentrations of 0.1% and 0.05% all of the tests mentioned above were run in triplicate. All of the plates were sealed and incubated at 33 °C without shaking for seven days, and 5% CO2 were maintained in the incubator.

Essential Oils To Help Fight Lyme Disease

Essential oils are pure extracts from natural substances and materials like plants, roots, and other liquids. Since they do not contain artificial ingredients that usually carry toxins and harmful substances, essential oils have been used to treat various chronic and sensitive illnesses. These wonders of nature have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Their use would not have continued if they were not so effective.

  • Clove Oil One of the strongest and most potent antimicrobial substance that is extracted primarily for dentistry purposes, clove oil is both an analgesic and an antiseptic. It also has a very high capacity in terms of oxygen radical absorbance and is capable of fighting borrelia and bartonella infections.
  • Thyme, Marjoram, Oregano All of which are antibacterial and also used for different infections, thyme, marjoram, and oregano are effective against Lyme disease.
  • Cinnamon This aromatic oil is not only good for relaxing the mood, it is also a powerful antimicrobial substance that cures Lyme disease.
  • Tea Tree Oil This essential oil is known to be very effective in liquefying and removing biofilms, the thin film of bacteria that settles on a surface. It is a very good antibacterial that works hand-in-hand with clove to deliver the best treatment outcomes.

Are Tick Bites Dangerous

5 essential oils that might win the fight against Lyme ...

Most tick bites are harmless and will cause no physical signs or symptoms. However, if youre allergic to tick bites, you may experience pain, swelling, or a burning sensation at the bite site, a rash, blisters, or difficulty breathing in severe cases.

Certain types of ticks transmit diseases to us when bitten. Usually, a tick must be attached to the skin for 36 to 48 hours to pass on a disease. Symptoms may start occurring about 3 to 7 days from the time of infection.

Global Lyme Alliances Director Of Research And Science Offers Perspective On Newly Published Research On Using Essential Oils To Treat Lyme Disease

Global Lyme Alliance -funded investigator Ying Zhang, Ph.D. details new findings on the effectiveness of certain essential oils to treat Lyme disease Identification of Essential Oils with Strong Activity against Stationary Phase Borrelia burgdorferi.

Persister forms of B. burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, are dormant or slow-growing, and tolerant of antibiotic treatment. Its not clear yet whether persister bacteria, immune dysfunction, or some combination of the two is responsible for post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome , in which patients treated with antibiotics continue to suffer symptoms.

The search for novel compounds to kill persister bacteria has led to the discovery that essential oils , aromatic compounds produced by plants, may be promising. In an article published in Antibiotics, a peer-reviewed journal, scientists led by Dr. Ying Zhang identified 10 EOs that have strong activity against stationary phase B. burgdorferi at a low concentration of 0.1%. The study, underwritten by GLA, found that of the 10 EOs, those of garlic, allspice, and Palmarosa were active at even at 0.05% concentration. In addition, cinnamaldehyde, a major ingredient isolated from cinnamon bark, was active against both stationary phase bacteria as well as replicating B. burgdorferi at a 0.02% concentration.

Five Essential Oils For Stopping Relapsing Symptoms Caused By Lyme Disease That Thrives Despite Multiple Antibiotics

For people with recurring Lyme disease inflammation, wandering nerve pains, and mind-numbing fatigue that still struggle despite months of several antibioticsby Greg Lee

Have you heard of the Greek mythical monster called the Hydra? It was a huge serpent with nine poisonous heads. Heracles the Greek divine hero, aka Hercules in Roman mythology, was sent to kill this monster. Whenever Heracles cut off one head, two grew back in its place. Heracles was soon overwhelmed by the growing number of serpent heads. Fortunately, his nephew Iolaus used a torch to cauterize the severed stumps before more heads could grow back. No longer swarmed by double serpent heads, Heracles overcame and killed the hydra.

How is a hydra that can keep growing new heads similar to fighting Lyme disease that persists despite antibiotic treatment?

Similar to the mythical hydra, persistent Lyme disease can keep spreading despite blasting it with powerful antibioticsIn lab studies, Lyme disease bacteria can develop persistent forms called round bodies and cysts that are not killed by antibiotics. Lyme bacteria can also produce a slime called biofilm which can make infections up to 1000x more drug resistant. Lyme patients with persistent infections can continue to struggle with multiple recurring symptoms.

Are there natural remedies that can help to reduce recurring symptoms by targeting antibiotic persistent forms of Lyme disease?

Lab Experiments Vs Human Experiments

The Zhang experiments look promising. However, what happens on a petri dish in the lab does not always happen in living people. In the case of essential oils, the Doterra craze of the past suggest in regular form, essential oils do not work well for most with Lyme. One problem may be that they are not well absorbed – so the oils do not reach the Lyme germs to kill them.

Selecting The Right Carrier Oil

Study: Essential Oils From Garlic, Other Herbs And Spices Kill Lyme Disease Bacteria

The most popular carrier oils to use for treating Lyme disease are coconut oil and jojoba oils. These are good standby oils to use with an essential oil blend. You should always use these oils with essential oils to ensure safety when you are applying essential oils for treatment. Because essential oils are so potent, you need to make sure that you have an oil that neutralizes their effect.

Essential Oils For Lyme Persisters

Recent lab experiments by Ying Zhang, MD and his colleagues show that some essential oils may help treat persister Lyme. His research is causing lyme sufferers, me, and many of my colleagues to revisit the use of essential oils to treat Lyme. Around 2015, there was an essential oil treatment craze in the world of Lyme. Many people tried brands like Doterra essential oils for Lyme. Some got help, but the majority did not.

There are a number of reasons Lyme is hard to treat. One idea getting a lot of current attention is that Lyme, like tuberculosis and leprosy, can develop persister cells. Persisters in Lyme are comprised of the spirochetes, cysts, and biofilm communities that grow very slowly or not at all. These persister forms essentially go into hibernation where they ignore the antibiotics a person takes and the immune system. Read more in How to Treat Persister Lyme. What Works?

While essential oil treatments largely failed for most in the past, their success in the future may involve improved delivery forms so they get into the bloodstream. For instance, liposomal products, where the oils are microscopically wrapped in fat, could get better absorption and work.

Essential Oils For Lyme Disease Symptoms

Lyme disease can manifest a variety of symptoms, particularly after it progresses to the chronic form. Some of these can include joint pain, brain inflammation, weakness and muscle pain, fatigue, cognitive problems, headaches, sleep disorders, and mood disorders.

Here are some essential oils which may help you to combat some of these symptoms:

Essential Oils For Lyme Disease:

Persisters cause Lyme disease. Persisters are the bacterial cells that stick to your body for a long time. They manage to evade your immune system. In some cases, persisters may also be resistant to antibiotics. In such cases, essential oils can help.

It has been recently found out that essential oils, derived from common spices or culinary herbs, have better antimicrobial activity against Borrelia burgdorferi, than some antibiotics. Essential oils not only help cure the Lyme disease but also heal the infection caused by the symptoms of the disease. Moreover, the essential oils do not have any side effects. These oils cure the disease entirely at its roots. Some of the effective oils are:

Essential Oils From Garlic And Other Herbs Kill ‘persister’ Lyme Disease Bacteria

Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health
Oils from garlic and several other common herbs and medicinal plants show strong activity against the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, according to a new study.

Oils from garlic and several other common herbs and medicinal plants show strong activity against the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, according to a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. These oils may be especially useful in alleviating Lyme symptoms that persist despite standard antibiotic treatment, the study also suggests.

The study, published October 16 in the journal Antibiotics, included lab-dish tests of 35 essential oils — oils that are pressed from plants or their fruits and contain the plant’s main fragrance, or “essence.” The Bloomberg School researchers found that 10 of these, including oils from garlic cloves, myrrh trees, thyme leaves, cinnamon bark, allspice berries and cumin seeds, showed strong killing activity against dormant and slow-growing “persister” forms of the Lyme disease bacterium.

“We found that these essential oils were even better at killing the ‘persister’ forms of Lyme bacteria than standard Lyme antibiotics,” says study senior author Ying Zhang, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Bloomberg School.

Chelation Therapy For Lyme Disease

Some people believe Lyme disease symptoms are linked to heavy metal toxicity from materials like lead or mercury. Chelation therapy is a method of removing heavy metals from the bloodstream.

Its done using a type of medication called a chelator or chelating agent. This medication binds to metals in the bloodstream, collecting them into a compound that can be processed by your kidneys and released in urine.

Chelation therapy is an effective treatment for a buildup of heavy metals. But theres no evidence that heavy metals contribute to Lyme disease, and chelation therapy wont treat the underlying infection.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Lyme Disease

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves exposure to 100 percent oxygen at a high pressure. Its often in a room called a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to promote wound healing.

There isnt much research about the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for Lyme disease. But a 2014 case study from Taiwan reports that it treated Lyme disease in a person who hadnt responded to antibiotics. Still, more large-scale studies are needed to understand whether its an effective treatment.

Fibroblast Cells Protect B Burgdorferi From Being Killed By Different Antibiotics Including Drug Combination Cefuroxime+ Doxycycline+ Daptomycin

Study: Essential Oils From Garlic, Other Herbs And Spices Kill Lyme Disease Bacteria

Previous studies have shown that fibroblasts provided protection against ceftriaxone . Here we evaluated whether a powerful persister drug combination CefU+ Dox + Dap, which is known to completely eradicate B. burgdorferi aggregated microcolony persisters in vitro could eradicate B. burgdorferi from fibroblast cells. Surprisingly, as shown in Figure 1 and Table 1, the presence of 3T3 fibroblast cells protected the B. burgdorferi from being completely killed not only by single antibiotics doxycycline, cefuroxime, or daptomycin but also by the triple drug combination Cefuroxime+ Doxycycline+ Daptomycin as shown by residual green GFP labeled B. burgdorferi remaining after drug treatment for 7 days. However, we did find that Cefuroxime+ Doxycycline+ Daptomycin combination was more effective in killing B. burgdorferi than any other single antibiotics . Nevertheless, none of them including the triple drug combination Cefuroxime+ Doxycycline+ Daptomycin could completely kill B. burgdorferi as shown by visible spirochetal growth after 21-day subculture .

Essential Oils From Garlic Can Kill Lyme Disease Bacteria

According to a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, oils from garlic and several other common herbs and medicinal plants show strong activity against the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

The study also suggests that these oils may be especially useful in alleviating Lyme symptoms that persist despite standard antibiotic treatment. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.

The study included lab-dish tests of 35 essential oils that are pressed from plants or their fruits and contain the plant’s main fragrance, or essence. The researchers found that 10 of these, including oils from garlic cloves, myrrh trees, thyme leaves, cinnamon bark, allspice berries and cumin seeds, showed strong killing activity against dormant and slow-growing persister forms of the Lyme disease bacterium.

The researchers hope in the near future to continue their investigations of essential oils with tests in live animals, including tests in mouse models of persistent Lyme infection. If those tests go well and the effective doses seem safe, the team expects to organize initial tests in humans.
