Traditional Healthcare Needs To Learn To Diagnose And Treat Tick

David Haney, PhD

This lack of understanding and experience had tragic consequences for David Haneys family. His son, Sean, passed away this year due to heart complications from undiagnosed TBDs. Sean was misdiagnosed for years, which is all-too common for those with Lyme and TBDs. David appealed to the practitioners in the audience: Be on the lookout for minor cardiac issues in Lyme disease. They can lead to a deadly problem for someone with Lyme. In summation, Davids plea was simple and to the point: Traditional healthcare needs to learn that tick-borne diseases exist in CA and how to diagnose and treat tick-borne diseases.

Focusing the medical science communitys attention on Lyme and TBDs, and developing accurate diagnostics and new, effective therapeutics for providers, has been a major multi-year effort of intense concentration and investment for Bay Area Lyme Foundation. Liz Horn, PhD, MBI, from the Lyme Disease Biobank was able to provide some rays of hope from the medical research community. Liz has been working in Lyme disease since 2013 and was part of the team that launched the Lyme Disease Biobank in 2014. LDB was created to provide much-needed patient samples to researchers studying Lyme disease and other TBDs.

Can I Prevent Lyme Disease

Theres no surefire way to avoid getting Lyme disease. But you can minimize your risk. Be aware of ticks when you are in high-risk areas. If you work outdoors or spend time gardening, fishing, hunting, or camping, take precautions:

  • Wear enclosed shoes or boots, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants. Tuck your pant legs into your shoes or boots to prevent ticks from crawling up your legs.
  • Use an insect repellent containing 10% to 30% DEET .
  • Wear light-colored clothing to help you see ticks more easily.
  • Keep long hair pulled back or wear a cap for protection.
  • Dont sit on the ground outside.
  • Check yourself for ticks regularly both indoors and outdoors. Wash your clothes and hair after leaving tick-infested areas.

If you use an insect repellent containing DEET, always follow the recommendations on the products label and dont overapply it. Place DEET on shirt collars and sleeves and pant cuffs, and only use it directly on exposed areas of skin. Be sure to wash it off when you go back indoors.

No vaccine for Lyme disease is currently on the market in the United States.

Do All Tick Bites Cause Lyme Disease

No, not all tick bites cause Lyme disease. Only deer ticks cause Lyme disease. And most people bitten by one of these ticks don’t usually get Lyme disease because:

  • Only a small number of these ticks are infected with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
  • An infected tick must be attached for at least 12 days to pass the bacteria.

Lyme Disease Diagnosis And Treatment

We see cases of Lyme disease in San Diego everyday. Lyme disease is among the most frequently diagnosed zoonotic tick-borne diseases worldwide. The bacteria that causes lyme disease belongs to the genus Borrelia. There are at least 37 known species, of which 13 are Lyme related including the more recently discovered Borrelia mayonii. Borrelia burgdorferi is the predominant causative agent of Lyme disease in the United States.

Transmission is mainly mediated through the bite of Ixodes ticks. The blacklegged tick spreads the disease in the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States. The western blacklegged dear tick spreads the disease on the Pacific Coast. The sheep tick spreads the disease throughout most of Europe. The taiga tick spreads disease in throughout most of Asia.

In North America, highly endemic areas are the northeastern and north-central United States, though cases have been reported in all states, but Hawaii. Transmission has not been documented in the tropics.

In contrast to common belief, Lyme disease is very common in California. This is a lyme disease map of deer ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi in different California counties.

How Is Lyme Disease Treatment Done

Some of the treatments for chronic Lyme disease offered at LIVV include:

Ozone therapy This involves introducing ozone to the body to create a pro-oxidative effect. This helps to get rid of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and cancerous cells. Ozone therapy helps greatly with alleviating fatigue and joint and muscle pains caused by PTLDS.

Glutathione is a major antioxidant that aids in the process of detoxification for patients with lyme disease. Glutathione also acts as a binder to bind up any pathogens within the bloodstream.

High dose vitamin C This is a potent vitamin that is an antioxidant at lower doses but pro-oxidant at high doses. This can help eradicate disease-causing organisms.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant that has an affinity towards the nervous system/neurotransmitters. ALA also helps bind up oxidative free radicals and removes them from the body.

NAD+ IV Therapy is a powerful nutrient that provides neurological benefits, cellular benefits, and improves mitochondrial health. Patients suffering from lyme disease may experience neurological symptoms as the spirochetes attach onto the nervous tissue.

Nutritional supplements These help to support detoxification, binding, and elimination of bacteria and viruses. A major supplement needed in the process of helping treat lyme disease is binders

We Want People In The San Diego Area And Across The Us To Know That We Are Able To Accept Tissue Donations From Surgeries We Are Also Expanding Our Recruitment Efforts For Persistent/chronic Lyme In San Diego

Liz Horn, PhD, MBI, Lyme Disease Biobank

When we launched the Biobank, researchers were always telling us that they wanted to study Lyme and TBDs, but they couldnt get well-characterized samples to use in their research. Since we founded the LDB, weve enrolled more than 1,000 participants from eight collection sites across the country, including one here in San Diego. Blood and urine sample donations support 70 research projects in both academia and industry, helping the development of better diagnostics and therapeutics, Liz said. And were excited to share that our Tissue Collection Program in partnership with the National Disease Research Interchange launched in 2018 to help us understand how Lyme bacteria invade tissues and organs sent the first tissue samples to researchers in 2021. We want people in the San Diego area and across the US to know that we can accept tissue donations from surgeries. We are also expanding our recruitment efforts for persistent/chronic Lyme in San Diego. By collecting samples from people with Lyme in San Diego, we hope to learn more about Lyme disease in California. And yes, there is Lyme disease in California, she added wryly.
