Yes, CSF samples can be submitted from horses with neurological signs. The CSF sample needs to be submitted together with a serum sample from the same animal and taken at the same time. The relative increase of antibodies in CSF can indicate local production of antibodies in the CNS. Typically, one or two antibody values are increased more than 2-fold if B. burgdorferi contributes to the neurologic condition.

Testing And Confirmation Of Infection
Serologic testing to document co-infection was performed retrospectively. Testing for antibodies to A. phagocytophilum was conducted by immunofluorescent assay at Focus Diagnostics, Inc. . Testing for antibodies to B. microti was done by immunofluorescent assay at either Focus Diagnostics, Inc., or at the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Center .
Testing for antibodies to the glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase protein of B. miyamotoi was performed at the Wadsworth Center by using a microsphere immunoassay that detects total antibodies to recombinant GlpQ of B. miyamotoi. The recombinant GlpQ was kindly provided by Sukanya Narasimhan and Erol Fikrig of Yale University .
Testing for antibodies to POWV was also performed at the Wadsworth Center . Serologic testing for POWV infection included a microsphere immunoassay to detect total antibodies to recombinant deer tick virus envelope protein and an IgM capture enzyme immunoassay to the LB strain of POWV . When the microsphere immunoassay and the IgM capture enzyme immunoassay were both reactive on acute- or convalescent-phase serum specimens, plaque reduction testing for neutralization antibodies against the LB strain of POWV was also performed.
Studying Lyme Disease In Westchester County
Its mission is two fold: treatment and research.
“We now have five identified deer tick transmitted infections in the Lower Hudson Valley,” Wormser said. “We’re doing studies now on trying to find better diagnostic tests for tick born diseases, trying to understand why some people have residual symptoms and other people don’t. We’re trying to find out if there’s any marker that would identify a person who’s going to have an uneventful recovery from one that may have some residual symptoms.”
Wormser said participants can really contribute to science because there are so many baffling questions about Lyme disease.
“The fatigue, aches and pains and headache and other things that accompany early Lyme disease can persist,” Wormser said. “At three months at least 25 percent of patients will have some minor symptom, at six months about 10 percent.”

Antibodies decrease slowly but gradually after the pathogen is cleared from the hosts circulation. Re-testing should not be performed too early. For horses/dogs with positive values for antibodies to OspF but negative values for antibodies to OspC , retesting should be done 3 months after the treatment was started. For horses with a positive OspC antibody value retesting can be done 6-8 weeks after the treatment started. At the time of retesting, a decrease of antibody levels can be expected in successfully treated animals. Serum antibodies may not have completely disappeared at this time. However, they should have dropped by about 40% of the original positive value.
What Are The Symptoms Of Lyme Disease
Dogs can display several forms of Lyme disease, but the most common symptoms are lameness, swollen lymph nodes, joint swelling, fatigue, and loss of appetite. In addition, serious kidney complications have been associated with Lyme disease in dogs.
