News: Can Claritin Help Cure Lyme Disease

New research suggests that a common allergy medication may be effective in starving and killing the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.

Press release from Bay Area Lyme Foundation, Feb 10, 2015

A new study funded by the Bay Area Lyme Foundation and conducted by Stanford School of Medicine researchers shows that loratadine, which is a common antihistamine frequently taken to treat allergy symptoms, may be able to help kill Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria associated with Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a potentially debilitating condition with 300,000 new cases in the US each year. The study was published in the Open Access publication Drug Design, Development and Therapy.

Our results bring us closer to the possibility of discovering the first targeted therapy to treat Lyme disease, says Jayakumar Rajadas, PhD, Director, Biomaterials and Advanced Drug Delivery Lab , Stanford School of Medicine, and lead author of the study. Its exciting to see first-hand that our insights into the metabolic activity of this elusive bacteria may give us the ability to actually kill it.

The results of this new laboratory study show that loratadine and specifically its metabolite, desloratadine, are able to prevent manganese from entering the cell wall of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, starving the bacteria and causing it to die in test tubes. The antihistamine accomplishes this by inhibiting the bacterias transport system, BmtA .

Claritin The Air About Lyme Disease

    Lyme Disease Working Group

On August 18, 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced its ten-fold increased prevalence estimate of Lyme disease, from 30,000 new infections per year in the U.S. to a preliminary new estimate of 300,000.

Lyme Borreliosis, more commonly known as Lyme disease, is the most frequently reported vector-borne illness in the United States.

Lyme disease affects individuals of all ages and is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through the bite of a tick. The disease is thought to be characterized by a signature bulls-eye rash around the bite-site in the early localized stage of Lyme disease, although this rash is not always present. Symptoms of headache, fever and fatigue can present soon after infection. Lyme disease can cause worsening symptoms over time during early and later disseminated stages. It is thought to be responsible for devastating effects in the health of humans including serious disease and sequelae in the brain, heart muscle and joint tissue. Meningitis, cranial neuritis, radiculoneuritis, peripheral neuritis, carditis, heart block, migratory musculoskeletal pain, intermittent or chronic arthritis, polyneuropathy, and chronic encephalopathy affecting memory, mood, or sleep have been associated with B. burgdorferi infection.

    Key Points To Remember

    • Most Lyme disease tests are designed to detect antibodies made by the body in response to infection.
    • Antibodies can take several weeks to develop, so patients may test negative if infected only recently.
    • Antibodies normally persist in the blood for months or even years after the infection is gone therefore, the test cannot be used to determine cure.
    • Infection with other diseases, including some tickborne diseases, or some viral, bacterial, or autoimmune diseases, can result in false positive test results.
    • Some tests give results for two types of antibody, IgM and IgG. Positive IgM results should be disregarded if the patient has been ill for more than 30 days.
