How Is Lyme Disease Diagnosed

Because various bacterial organisms can cause tick-borne illnesses, they can affect multiple body systems and have symptoms that vary widely between infected individuals. This makes Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses challenging to diagnose, especially among children. As such, a large number of cases of tick-borne illness are misdiagnosed. For an accurate diagnosis of your frustrating symptoms, its crucial to consult a tick-borne illness expert like Dr. Kenneth Bock, who has decades of experience diagnosing the root cause of chronic illnesses and restoring balance to his patients immune systems

Understanding The Caseload Helps Prevention Programs

People need to practice safe behaviors and do tick checks themselves to increase early detection, said Andrew Evans Jr., coordinator of communicable disease at the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health.

For now, Lyme disease prevention is the main focus of public health officials because ticks carrying the disease are not leaving areas like the Hudson Valley. In fact, the disease has been continuing to inch slowly north, said Andrew Evans Jr., coordinator of communicable disease at the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health.

Our Daughter Got Her Life Back

Hudson Valley journalist explores the human contribution ...

Our pre-teen daughter had always been active in sports and engaged at school. Suddenly she was complaining of aches and pains and was exhausted all the time. She became lethargic at school and no longer wanted to play soccer. Her pediatrician repeatedly dismissed her symptoms as growing pains and moodiness. Months later, our daughters symptoms had worsened to include headaches, swollen joints, shortness of breath, and more. For more than a year, we visited a variety of experts, all of whom told us it wasnt Lyme disease and prescribed a long list of medicines, ranging from anti-inflammatories to antidepressants, meant to ease her symptoms. Nothing helped. When another parent told me how much the chronic disease experts at Bock Integrative had helped his child, we knew I had to give Dr. Bock and Jennifer Petkos a try. The comprehensive approach they took in evaluating our daughters condition allowed them to diagnose her with two lesser-known tick-borne illnesses and they were able to design a treatment program that restored balance to her immune system. Shes now an active high school athlete and straight-A student. Thank you for giving our daughter her life back!~ Victoria, Hesler, Somerset, New Jersey

Lyme Disease: Dutchess Leads Nation In Cases

Dutchess County and four other mid-Hudson Valley counties have the nation’s highest rates of Lyme disease, an illness transmitted by the bite of a tiny and insidious tick.

An exclusive Poughkeepsie Journal analysis of state and federal data shows:

  • Dutchess County had the highest number of reported Lyme cases — 6,407 — nationwide from 2002 to 2006, the latest period for which federal figures are available.
  • Columbia ranked first nationwide in the proportion of Lyme in the population, or per-capita, rate Dutchess, Greene, Putnam and Ulster counties placed second, third, sixth and eighth, respectively. Orange was 11th.
  • Though current Lyme rates by county are not available nationwide, state data for the top 10 Lyme counties previously show Columbia and Greene counties in first and second in 2010. Dutchess and Ulster fell from the top 10.

“This is something we need to take extremely seriously,” said Dr. Richard S. Ostfeld, a disease ecologist at Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook. “It’s an enormous public-health issue.”

Lyme disease is caused by the bite of a black-legged tick, also called a deer tick. This year, there could be 50 percent more nymph ticks, the most threatening type, than in any of the past 21 years, Ostfeld’s research shows. That’s because of a bumper crop of acorns that swelled the ranks of white-footed mice mice, not deer, chiefly infect the ticks that later bite people.

The Firefighter Who Needed Saving

Piermont Fire Departments Daniel Goswick typically saved lives but found himself needing rescuing last summer.

A hiker fell off the cliffs by the Palisades and dislocated his knees. Piermont divers went into the watery muck and Goswick aided them to drag the man to safety.

Two ticks also secretly bit him that day, but weeks passed and nothing happened. Like some other victims, he didnt have the telltale rash or any other symptoms of Lyme disease.

About three weeks later, Goswick started suffering severe flu-like symptoms and had brown urine. He had a paramedic stop by his house, and a quick evaluation prompted a trip to the emergency room, where a doctor diagnosed a urinary tract infection and antibiotic.

The next day, however, Goswick awoke and felt like he was dying. Excruciating pain radiated across his lower back and kidneys, as well as a splitting headache.

He went to Westchester Medical Center and a team of doctors spent days running dozens of tests, drawing blood every couple hours and using X-rays as his kidneys and liver rapidly shut down.

The doctors ultimately determined Goswick had Lyme and babesiosis, another tick-borne disease, and started an antibiotic regimen that slowly reversed his life-threatening medical emergency.

Goswick, now 50, recently recounted the ordeal that left him shaken but vigilant.

In typical first-responder fashion, Goswick downplayed the fact his near-death experience started with a heroic mountain-side rescue.

Hudson Valley Doctor Finds Success With Rare Covid

A doctor from the Hudson Valley is hoping others take notice after he’s found success with a rare COVID-19 treatment.

Dr. Richard Horowitz who specializes in treatments of tick-borne illnesses says he’s found similarities between COVID-19 and Lyme disease. Because of the similarities, he says he’s seen great success treating COVID-19 patients the same way he treats patients with Lyme.

COVID-19 patients with shortness of breath have seen noticeable results within an hour of taking glutathione, Horowitz told News 10.

The scientific literature has shown that there are three nutritional supplements, something that is very easy, not expensive, and easy to find. Theyre called NAC, alpha lipoic acid, and glutathione, Horowitz told the ABC station in Albany.

Horowitz explained on Facebook, glutathione helps with inflammation and shortness of breath in COVID-19 pneumonia.

“I hope some of our public health officials saw the interview. We desperately need a randomized, controlled trial, especially in our nursing homes and most vulnerable,” he wrote on Facebook while sharing the interview.

Horowitz, the Medical Director at the Hudson Valley Healing Arts Center in Poughkeepsie, is now hoping more medical professionals and government officials take notice.

If they would see the success that I had in my patients and understand the science. I think they would be interested,” he said.

The Cost Of Fighting Lyme

How to treat resistant lyme disease and chronic disease with Dr. Richard Horowitz

Berkley, the former software engineer, estimated spending $100,000 out-of-pocket on drugs and doctors during his years-long battle with Lyme disease.

He mortgaged the family home to cover the cost to avoid the alternative of returning to a life of mind-numbing pain, sleepless nights and cognitive decline.

At family gatherings Id sit there like a dolt, Berkley said. Everything was going too fast. Life was like drinking from a garden hose then it was like a fire hose. I just couldnt handle and couldnt process the information that was coming in.

Berkleys Lyme disease didnt get diagnosed for years after the bite. He recently recounted the decision to pursue the costly antibiotic treatments.

Its a matter of where I am and I want a quality of life againthere is not even a choice, he said. The alternative is that youre not going to be here anymore.

The medical bills piled up after his health insurance plan dropped the doctor prescribing the antibiotics, which stem from concerns about complex health risks tied to long-term antibiotic use.

Addressing the issue, Berkley compared his situation to cancer patients.

When people have cancerthe drugs are killing them. Its a choice: How long do you last? Do you last taking the drugs, or does the cancer kill you? he asked.

“I had Lyme and believe I still have Lyme to a degree, but my quality of life is so much better now.”
