Lyme Disease Just Got Nastier
A new culprit behind Lyme disease has been discovered, and it can cause even nastier symptoms than its predecessor.
Until now, scientists thought that the tick-borne illness was caused by only one species of bacteria, called Borrelia burgdorferi. But scientists from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Mayo Clinic have discovered a second, related species of bacteria, Borrelia mayonii, that can infect people bitten by the black-legged deer tick.
The report, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, says the new bacteria causes similar symptoms in the early stage of infection, such as fever, headache, rash, and neck pain. Arthritis can set in weeks later.
But unlike B. burgdorferi, B. mayonii can inflict nausea and vomiting, as well. It also may cause a diffuse rash, different from the telltale “bull’s-eye” rash doctors peg to the original Lyme infection.
“One patient’s father said his son looked like a Dalmatian because of the spots all over him,” said study author Dr. Bobbi Pritt, a medical director in the division of clinical microbiology at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota.
Pritt told CBS News that two of the patients in their study experienced neurological symptoms, as well. “One patient had profound somnolence . They were so zonked out they couldn’t be woken up. The other patient had vision disturbances, double vision,” she said.
Scientists Find Promising New Treatment For Lyme Disease
A new study gives hope that an effective treatment for Lyme disease may be available in the future. The new treatment involves the drugs cefotaxime and azlocillin.
The new paper appears in the Nature journal Scientific Reports .
Bacteria belonging to the group Borrelia burgdorferi cause Lyme disease. Most people develop it after being bitten by a tick that carries the bacteria.
Approximately 6080% of people with Lyme disease develop a circular red skin rash called erythema migrans around the infected tick bite, and some also develop flu-like symptoms.
Most people develop the rash within 4 weeks of being bitten, but it can appear up to 3 months afterward.
of people with the disease later develop symptoms of fatigue, pain in their muscles, joints or nerves, and cognitive impairment.
These symptoms can continue for months or even years after their initial infection.
Researchers have suggested that this may because of drug-tolerant persisters, a group of bacterial cells that survive the initial dose of antibiotics.
Others believe its an immune disorder caused by bacteria during the first exposure, which causes a perpetual inflammation condition. Whatever the cause, the pain for patients is still very real.

Phase Iv: Systemic Detox
In phase IV, we will continue to support your mitochondria and immune system. We will also add detoxification support for environmental chemicals and heavy metals.
Heavy metals serve no purpose in your body. Heavy metal toxicity can be very dangerous to your health. Heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, mercury, aluminum, and cadmium can increase inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular interference. They can weaken your body making recovery from biotoxin illness more difficult.
Heavy metals and other toxins can lead to various symptoms, including fatigue, blurred vision, inflammation, joint stiffness, pain, weight gain, digestion issues, nervous system problems, and increased risk of cancer. As the mitochondria get stronger and our pathogen load goes down, we want to ramp up our aggressiveness in getting these out of the body.
Eating a nutrient-dense diet, proper hydration, movement, oil pulling, and other detoxification strategies that support cleansing, digestion, and elimination is critical. This is why we are adding Bioactive Carbon MetChem for heavy metals in this phase .

What Is Biotoxin Illness
Biotoxins are hazardous organic substances that can cause significant damage to the human body. These compounds are produced by living organisms. They are biological in nature and toxic to humans. They may be produced by plants, bacteria, or animals.
Though not always, biotoxins usually serve as a defense mechanism for the creator. However, they can have a wide range of negative effects on the human body. Biotoxin illness happens when these biotoxins affect your body adversely, leading to chronic symptoms. Biotoxins target different systems in your body leading to various symptoms.
Neurotoxins, for example, specifically impact your nervous system, whereas cytotoxins target individual cells. The two most commonly seen biotoxins I see impacting my patients are tick-borne biotoxins, such as Borrelia Burgdorferi which causes Lyme disease and mold biotoxins called mycotoxins that cause mold illness.
Examples of biotoxins include:
- Viral infections
- Bacterial endotoxins
Mold illness, yeast overgrowth, Lyme disease, and other biotoxin illnesses are on the rise in the United States. Our houses are built of wood and paper, vulnerable to water damage and moisture. These water-damaged indoor environments are a breeding ground for mold and mold illness. Yet many people are unaware that mold is hiding in their home or dont take the problems seriously.
What Is Borrelia Mayonii
Borrelia mayonii are a type of bacteria recently found in North America that can cause Lyme disease. These bacteria are different from the three types of bacteria that cause most cases of Lyme disease worldwide.
- Borrelia burgdorferi
- B. afzelii
- B. garinii
B. mayonii is the only species besides B. burgdorferi shown to cause Lyme disease in North America.

Biotoxin Illness And Chronic Inflammation
Lyme disease is also on the rise due to a variety of factors, including climate change, the elimination of predators, deforestation, and habitat change. The risk of Lyme disease is higher in wooded areas. However, nowadays we see Lyme disease in people from urban areas whose time in nature may include a stroll in the park, but never or rarely spend time in the forest.
If your body is exposed to a biotoxin, your immune system will recognize it as a dangerous invader. Your body will try to break it down and remove the biotoxin, however, the body is usually not equipped to remove it, especially if your health is already compromised due to an unhealthy diet or lifestyle.
If your body is unable to remove these biotoxins efficiently, it will set up a series of inflammatory responses leading to a variety of symptoms and health issues. In some people, biotoxins can cause debilitating health conditions and disease, including Lyme disease, chronic inflammatory response syndrome , chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, hormonal imbalances, neurological conditions, including Alzheimers disease, and more.
Tick Or Mosquito Bites
You may get biotoxin illness from tick or mosquito bites. One of the most common biotoxin illnesses is Lyme disease, which is a serious infectious disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria found in and transmitted by infected black-legged or deer tick. Since Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks, it is more common in wooded areas, such as forests and trails, however, there is still a risk elsewhere, for example in city parks or even your backyard.
In the past, doctors believed that the tick had to stay in your body for at least 24 to 48 hours for you to get Lyme disease. However, according to new research, it seems that even if a tick is attached to the human body for just 15 minutes, that may be enough to transmit a variety of microbes into the victim.
Ticks may also carry other infections. There are over 200 different bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections that ticks may carry and you may experience along or outside of Lyme, including Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, and Rickettsia. Biotoxin illnesses caused by mosquito bites include the West Nile Virus , La Crosse encephalitis , Jamestown Canyon virus , Western Equine Encephalitis , malaria, and dengue fever .

Biotoxin Illness: Symptoms Causes And Healing Protocol
Are you dealing with fatigue, headaches, brain fog, digestion trouble, congestion, or other chronic, unexplained symptoms? You may be dealing with biotoxin illness.
Biotoxins are hazardous organic substances that can cause significant damage to your health. Examples of biotoxins include mold and fungi, bacteria, volatile organic compounds , endotoxins and actinomycetes.
Most people are exposed to biotoxins through living in water damaged buildings. Other ways to come into contact with biotoxins include ingesting contaminated food or water, inhaling airborne biotoxins, and tick or spider bites.
In this article, you will learn what biotoxin illness is. You will understand its symptoms and major causes. I will introduce my 5-Phase Healing Protocol to help you repair your body from biotoxin illness and regain your health and well-being.
What Is The Outlook For Someone With Lyme Disease
Most of the people who get Lyme disease and treated early will be fine.
Even after proper treatment, some patients may experience lingering fatigue, achiness or headaches. This does not signify ongoing infection and will not respond to additional antibiotics. The majority of people in this group will have symptoms resolve over the next 1-6 months.
Chronic Lyme Syndrome
Chronic Lyme syndrome is a term used by some that includes the symptoms of Post-Lyme syndrome outlined above. This is a controversial topic with no accepted etiology and no proven cause or association.

For Ewing, the receipt of a written thanks left her very humbled, and it kind of took my breath away. For someone to take the time to do so, she says, is rather unusual. In this case, the patient have never even seen her in person.
While not the ones directly administering care, the Nurse Line team play a crucial role in patient health, says Jean Johnston, Mayo Clinic Nurse Line manager.
All the nurses who work on the triage line are very experienced nurses because they have to have very strong assessment skills to fall back on. You cant physically see the patient, so you have to really truly listen to what the patient is saying, visualize what theyre saying, and not only listen to the patient but listen to the sounds in the background, says Johnston.
Ewing says, My main job is just to get people to the right place at the right time using a combination of assessment tools, her senses and her knowledge base. A calming presence and caring nature are also key.
As a nurse, some of what I do is incredibly sad, Ewing says. It can be very hard when you know are about to get bad news or things arent headed in the right direction, and your job is to help them through the process, whatever that might be.
During COVID-19, the team have served as heroes behind the scenes. While the crisis has been an additional challenge to what were already doing, the staff are a well-oiled machine, Ewing notes.

What More Do Researchers Need To Know
CDC, Mayo Clinic, and the Minnesota Department of Health continue to test blood samples from patients suspected of tickborne illness, like Lyme disease, to learn more about tickborne bacteria that may cause human illness.
In addition, biologists continue to collect and test ticks throughout the United States to determine the range of the ticks that are infected with these bacteria.
Mayo Researchers Identify New Borrelia Species That Causes Lyme Disease
Until now, Borrelia burgdorferi was only species believed to cause Lyme disease in North America
Rochester, Minn. Mayo Clinic researchers, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and health officials from Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, have discovered a new bacterial species that causes Lyme disease in people. The new species has been provisionally named Borrelia mayonii. Prior to this finding, the only species believed to cause Lyme disease in North America was Borrelia burgdorferi.
In the paper published recently in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Mayo Clinic scientists tested samples from U.S. patients from 2003 to 2014 for evidence of Lyme disease using a method called polymerase chain reaction . From 2012 to 2014, the researchers noticed unusual test results from 6 of 9,000 samples from residents of Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin.

Based on these findings, the researchers believe that the organism may have only recently emerged in the upper Midwestern U.S. It is possible that this species has been present for even longer but at such low levels that it escaped detection, adds Dr. Pritt.

Phase Iii: Whole Body Immune Support
In Phase III, we will continue to focus on getting rid of any parasites. We are continuing this process because it takes about two months to get rid of parasites.
We will continue to support your mitochondria. It takes about three to six months to get the mitochondria back in balance, so we will be focusing on this throughout this program. Since biotoxin illness often experiences additional viral infections, we are bringing in Bioactive Carbon Foundation to help your body get rid of viral infected cells and regain your health.
Additionally, Phase III also puts a major emphasis and lymphatic system support. Your lymphatic system is a major circulatory system and analogous to the drains in your home. A congested lymphatic system can lead to all kinds of issues including skin problems, fatigue, headaches, and weakened immunity.
To support your immune system, I recommend regular light exercise , breathwork, eating an anti-inflammatory diet, taking lymph-supporting herbs, including Reishi, Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Holy Basil, Cordyceps, and Panax Ginseng, or supplementation with Lymphatic Support, infrared sauna, dry brushing, proper hydration, massage, and chiropractic care. To learn more about your lymphatic system and lymphatic support, I recommend this article.

TUDCA: This is a fantastic supplement for drainage and liver support. Take 1 capsule twice daily in the morning and at night.
Phase Ii Gut & Immune Support
The goal of the second phase is to get rid of parasites and continue to support your mitochondrial health. We are also becoming more aggressive at getting the microbiome back in balance and pulling mold/fungal compounds out of the body.
There are a variety of parasites that you may have inside your body, including roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm, hook, nametode, and nematode. Parasites can increase inflammation and lead to various symptoms, including fatigue, brain fog, digestion issues, and more. When it comes to Lyme disease and parasites, it is thought that Borrelia and other co-infection causing pathogens can live inside these parasites.
Tick bites actually deliver nematodes inside your body that may carry these co-infections. This leads to more symptoms and complications and makes diagnosis and recovery more challenging. Furthermore, having too many bad gut bacteria and gut dysbiosis creates a feeding ground for parasites, further infections, inflammation, increased symptoms, and a higher risk of further disease. This is why Phase II tackles this with an aggressive approach .
To protect your gut flora and get rid of parasites, I recommend an anti-inflammatory, gut-healthy diet we discussed earlier. Certain herbs, including black walnut, sweet wormwood, garlic, oregano, tribulus, mimosa pudica, neem, wormseed, vidanga, passionflower, and clove are fantastic for parasite cleansing.
