Misconception #1: In Conventional Medicine, Chronic Lyme Disease Does Not Exist!

There is the recognition and diagnosis of acute Lyme disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterial spirochete, with its classic a bulls-eye rash, and positive Elisa antibody test. This is usually followed by the application of an antibiotic such as doxycycline for 4 to 6 weeks. However, there is no diagnostic recognition of what some call Chronic Lyme Disease.

Could You Be One Of These Individuals?

This makes it very difficult for chronically sick individuals who may have a chronic Lyme contribution to their illness. Do you feel chronically ill, suffering with pain and fatigue or even neurological symptoms? Are doctors baffled by your strange symptoms of cyclic fevers, muscle aches and weakness, headaches, tingling and numbness? Lyme disease and its co-infections are extremely difficult to diagnosis, especially in the chronic case.

The Question Remains, Is There Such A Thing As Chronic Lyme Disease?

Health Woes Lead To Self

Oppenheimer said Freitas, once wildly independent, increasingly depends on him as she struggles with her health. The two met when she was a single mom driving a Madison Metro bus and juggling classes at the UW-Madison. Oppenheimer had overheard her speaking in Portuguese, and he tried to put together a phrase that he could speak in the same language. That led to a first date and in 2011, marriage.

But these days, Oppenheimer said, his wife is very drained.

And even friends and family members question whether the symptoms Freitas describes are real.

“When everybody is saying that it is not Lyme,” Freitas said, “you start to question yourself.”

She tried a four-week course of doxycycline, the first-line antibiotics therapy for treating Lyme disease, prescribed by another rheumatologist. She began to feel better, with less pain and less brain fog. However, the symptoms returned once she completed the treatment. She even found herself starting to stutter.

Oppenheimer himself was diagnosed with Lyme disease as a 19-year-old. At the time, he was living less than 50 miles from Lyme, Connecticut, the community for which the disease was named.

He described an “arrogant unwillingness” by the medical establishment to recognize what he believes are his wifes ongoing symptoms of Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease Prophylaxis After Tick Bite

Minnesota Lyme Association seeks feedback from state residents who have had long-term antibiotics for Lyme disease.

In 2010, Minnesotas medical board gave doctors in that state a five-year window in which they can treat Lyme patients with long-term antibiotics without fearing theyll lose their license because of it.

The five-year moratorium was a compromise reached between the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and state legislators who wanted to protect Lyme doctors from prosecution.

Its now almost two years into that 5-year period, and the Minnesota Lyme Association wants to document how long-term antibiotics have helped Lyme patients in their state. MLA medical adviser Dr. Elizabeth Maloney is spearheading the project.

Dr. Maloney wants to present the MBMP with a single report containing the outcomes from individual patients, as documented in their medical charts. This is called a collection of case reports and is recognized as scientific evidence.

According to the MLA, Validating the efficacy of long-term treatment to the MBMP and the state legislature will make the case for continuing the moratorium, to the benefit of current and future Lyme disease patients.

Although the moratorium runs another 3 years, Dr. Maloney needs to start compiling this information now. Its a time-consuming project that cant be done at the last minute.

Do All Tick Bites Cause Lyme Disease

No, not all tick bites cause Lyme disease. Only deer ticks can spread the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. And most people bitten by one of these ticks don’t usually get Lyme disease because:

  • Only a small number of these ticks are infected.
  • An infected tick must be attached for at least 1â2 days to pass the bacteria.

Scandia Resident Raises Awareness About Lyme Disease

May is observed as Lyme disease awareness. During the month, activists and educators get the chance to spread information on how to prevent Lyme and tick-borne diseases.

Lyme disease is one of several tick borne diseases in Minnesota. According to the Minnesota Department of Health , Lymes is the most common tick borne disease in Minnesota and the United States.

Minnesota has the seventh highest number of reported cases of Lyme disease in the nation, said longtime Scandia resident Anne Myre. This is a huge problem in Minnesota. Lyme is a growing health crisis and we have to do something about it.

In late February, Myre and members from the Center for Lyme Action met with members of congress. It was a virtual event attended by 300 advocates. Myself and two other gals met with all the Minnesota reps, said Myre.

Myre is in a mission.

We need better diagnostics, better testing and a cure, she said. Current diagnostics don’t work. They miss up to 60% of acute cases. Current treatments work for approximately 85% of acute patients but are insufficient for chronic patients.

Per patient, federal funding for Lyme disease is incredibly low . Less common diseases such as West Nile has 200 times and Malaria has 800 times the amount of per patient funding.

And that’s just a short list, she said.

For 20 plus years Myre had been tested and misdiagnosed for a multitude of illnesses.

Freitas saw a long string of mainstream physicians for a diagnosis rheumatologists, an infectious-disease specialist, family medicine doctors and emergency room physicians. Then, in the spring of 2020, she began seeing out-of-network doctors in and outside of Wisconsin, and many of them didnt take insurance.

A survey of more than 2,400 U.S. patients found 50 percent of the respondents reported seeing at least seven physicians before a Lyme diagnosis, and more than half continued to suffer symptoms for at least six months after the recommended short course of antibiotics.

In January 2021, Freitas borrowed $4,000 from her mother-in-law and flew to Washington, D.C., to receive intravenous antibiotic therapy. The treatments failed to help in fact she dropped 30 pounds in a matter of weeks. “I thought I was gonna die because I couldnt eat,” Freitas said.

She is pictured at her home in Middleton, Wis., on Oct. 6, 2021, with her husband John Oppenheimer. Freitas is now being treated by Dr. Samuel Shor of the Tick-Borne Illness Center of Excellence in Woodruff, Wisconsin. Introduction From Restorative Health Solutions About Lyme Disease

Welcome to the beginning of Lyme disease education! We will do our best to help get through the mystery and convoluted arguments surrounding Lyme Disease and who it affects. One of our favorite sources for good information is The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society . More information can be found at their website: www.ilads.org. For beginning we have copied down from ILADS their basic information about Lyme and will make comments on each piece. While ILADS is terrific for information they are a mainly medical organization and thus once they start going through treatments they will recommend long-term, heavy dose antibiotics. In future hand-outs we will explain how and why we vary in some of these approaches in how we help patients recover.

Other Pathogens To Blame

My Puppy Got Lyme Disease & I Didn’t Treat It…

Shor and his co-authors, including Maloney, propose that the lingering symptoms are caused by several pathogens from the Borrelia burgdorferi family or other tick-borne pathogens.

Nardelli said theres a variety of symptoms and severity in Lyme disease patients, and those symptoms can be caused by the inflammatory responses against the microbes.

Inflammation is a huge part of the immune response. Its one of the frontline defenses we have, and it has this negative connotation, but it is intended for good, he said. Your immune response trying to kill the bug and in doing so, can cause damage, essentially.

Some theories suggest that variants of the Lyme bacteria are resistant to antibiotics. Others argue that chronic Lyme is caused by a powerful immune reaction or it may even trigger an autoimmune disease. The central neural networks may be altered, having a significant impact on symptoms or a combination of these factors.

Nardelli is investigating Lyme-related arthritis that persists after treatment with antibiotics. He said science can be a slow process of acquiring new knowledge, and its tough for patients who are suffering with no clear answers.

That can lead them to seek out untrustworthy practitioners or fall for costly treatments that dont work. You go out and find doctors that diagnose everything as Lyme disease, Nardelli said.

The whole goal is to get people the right diagnosis so they can get the therapy that they need, she said.

The Rundown On Lyme Disease In The Us With Dr Clarke

What is Lyme disease?

Dr. Clarke: Lyme disease is an infection caused by a spirochete called Borrelia burgdorferi, which initiates an inflammatory response. The Borrelia bacteria is transferred between hosts by the black-legged tick called Ixodes scapularis during a blood meal. The White-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, is the principal, natural reservoir host and they appear to be tolerant to infection by Borrelia. With deforestation and climate change however, casual hosts, such as humans, dogs and other domestic mammals, have become new reservoirs. Humans are not adapted to managing a Borrelia infection, which may manifest in humans as a health complication we call Lyme disease.

How prevalent is Lyme disease in the U.S.?

Dr. Clarke: This is a major healthcare issue, particularly in New England and the Upper Midwest. National surveillance reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show around 30,000 cases per year. However, the impact is generally considered to be underreported. A more realistic number could be greater by an order of magnitude, and actual disease incidence could be as high as 300,000 cases per year. Lyme disease is considered the Hidden Pandemic.

What are the symptoms, and how is Lyme disease detected early on?

What are the lasting impacts of untreated Lyme disease?

Why is education important regarding this specific tick-borne illness?
