What Is Lyme Disease In Dogs
Lyme disease is also referred to as Lyme borreliosis, a bacterial illness that certain species of infected ticks can transmit to humans, dogs and other animals.
Since ticks dont fly or jump, they make contact with their host by lurking on the tips of long grass or bush, then quickly grabbing onto your dog when he walks by. He then crawls on to his body to look for a place to bite.

An Act Respecting A Federal Framework On Lyme Disease
The Federal Framework on Lyme Disease ActFootnote 1, which received Royal Assent on December 16, 2014, requires the federal government to develop a Federal Framework on Lyme Disease that would include the following three pillars:
- Surveillance: The establishment of a national medical surveillance program to use data collected by the Public Health Agency of Canada to properly track incidence rates and the associated economic costs of Lyme disease.
- Education and Awareness: The creation and distribution of standardized educational materials related to Lyme disease, for use by any public health care provider within Canada, designed to increase national awareness about the disease and enhance its prevention, identification, treatment and management.
- Guidelines and Best Practices: The establishment of guidelines regarding the prevention, identification, treatment and management of Lyme disease, and the sharing of best practices throughout Canada.
To inform the development of this framework, the Public Health Agency of Canada, on behalf of the Minister of Health, held a conference in May 2016. Over 500 people participated in person and via an online interface. Lyme disease patients, their families and others shared their experiences with Lyme disease. In addition, Lyme disease experts provided information on current knowledge and research related to Lyme disease treatment, prevention, diagnosis and management. Where Are Ticks Carrying Lyme Disease Found
Though Lyme disease occurs in every state, risk of infection varies. The vast majority of cases are from the Upper Midwest, the Northeast, and the Pacific case, though recent changes in deforestation, and migrating bird and deer populations have impacted these statistics. Ticks are most often found in farm fields, wooded areas, shrubs and long grass.

Stage : Early Localized Disease
Symptoms of Lyme disease usually start 1 to 2 weeks after the tick bite. One of the earliest signs of the disease is a bulls-eye rash.
The rash occurs at the site of the tick bite, usually, but not always, as a central red spot surrounded by a clear spot with an area of redness at the edge. It may be warm to the touch, but it isnt painful and doesnt itch. This rash will gradually fade in most people.
The formal name for this rash is erythema migrans. Erythema migrans is said to be characteristic of Lyme disease. However, many people dont have this symptom.
Some people have a rash thats solid red, while people with dark complexions may have a rash that resembles a bruise.
The rash can occur with or without systemic viral or flu-like symptoms.

Persister Forms Of Lyme Bacteria
During the past decade, new research from Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of New Haven have shown the presence of novel biofilm forms and persister forms of Borrelia in culture, which potentially explains treatment resistance and relapse.
A recent study published in the Springer journal BMC Research Notes, conducted by University of New Haven researchers and Dr. Richard Horowitz, showed how the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, forms biofilms that protect the organism, and that dapsone combination therapy was one of the most effective treatments against the biofilm form of the bacteria.
This study helps identify dapsones novel mechanism, which explains in part its effectiveness in relieving resistant symptoms in chronic Lyme disease. The follow-up clinical study demonstrated that combining antibiotics including a tetracycline with older leprosy drugs, e.g., rifampin and dapsone, led to a 98% improvement and 45% long term remission rate in all patients.
Both studies were funded by the MSIDS Research Foundation which supports research for causes, treatments, and possible cures of tick-borne and other vector-borne illnesses, as well as the causes, treatments, and possible cures of other acute and chronic diseases.

The Truth About Antibiotic Treatments
Until recently, many doctors in Canada tended to prescribe only one round of antibiotics, irrespective of the stage of infection. However, current research suggests that a single course of antibiotics is often insufficient for treating Lyme disease, especially if the infection has been untreated for several months.
How Is Lyme Disease Treated
Nearly all people with Lyme disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics, usually doxycycline or amoxicillin. The duration of treatment depends on the stage of infection. In general, the sooner such therapy is initiated following infection, the quicker and more complete the recovery.
Pregnant women should be treated for Lyme disease as well. There is, however, no evidence that a fetus can be infected from its mother. Additionally, NO strong evidence exists to suggest miscarriages are more likely after Lyme.

Background And Diagnosis Of Rheumatologic Manifestations Of Lyme Disease
Although Lyme arthritis was reported to occur in 60% of untreated patients in the United States with Lyme disease nearly 20 years ago , the frequency of this manifestation has been 10% in recent series , probably because of improved recognition and earlier treatment of patients with early Lyme disease. However, the frequency of arthritis among the 40,792 cases of Lyme disease reported to the CDC for the years 20012002 was at least 24.8% . Possible explanations for the higher proportion of arthritis cases in national reporting include reporting bias favoring the tabulation of seropositive Lyme disease cases, confusion between arthritis and arthralgia by the treating health care provider , and inaccuracy of Lyme disease diagnosis . In addition, surveillance report forms differ by state, and reported seropositivity in support of a diagnosis of Lyme arthritis is not necessarily based on 2-tier testing .
Lyme arthritis is a monoarticular or oligoarticular form of arthritis that typically involves the knee . However, other large joints or the temporomandibular joint may be involved. Large knee effusions that are out of proportion to the pain are typical. A Baker’s cyst may develop and may rupture. Lyme arthritis is often intermittent in nature if untreated, with episodes of joint inflammation spontaneously resolving after a few weeks to a few months. Persistent swelling of the same joint for 12 months would be an unusual presenting manifestation of Lyme arthritis.
