Around 60% of patients will develop joint pain or even arthritis as their Lyme disease progresses, according to a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine study. Usually, it starts in the joints closest to where you were bitten and can spread from there, especially to areas like the knees. The pain isnt usually constant, though. Experts dont fully understand why, but the symptoms can wax and wane over a period of weeks or months, Sellati says.
Over time, the disease can attack the cartilage in the joints and lead to tissue damage, says Linda Yancey, M.D., an infectious disease specialist with Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital in Katy, TX.
Like many of the other problems caused by Lyme disease, this one is also triggered by inflammation. The damage to tissues, bone, and cartilage is caused by the production of pro-inflammatory proteins, the same protein responsible for damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis, Sellati says.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. When To See Your Doctor About Lyme Disease Symptoms
Its best to seek medical attention sooner rather than later. The longer Lyme disease goes untreated, the more likely you are to develop severe complications like intense joint pain, heart problems, or cognitive issues.
Lyme disease treatment: Your doctor should refer you to an infectious disease specialist, who can evaluate your symptoms and decide whether you need testing, Dr. Yancey says. If you test positive, youll be given antibiotics to fight the infection.
False-negatives: If your test comes back clean, but youre convinced that Lyme disease is the culprit, ask to be retested. False negatives are common early on since it takes a few weeks for your immune system to build up antibodies to the bacteria.

Types Of Lyme Disease Rash
According to the Bay Area Lyme Foundation, the rash associated Lyme disease can present differently based on a variety of factors. These include, but are not limited to:
- How long youve been infected.
- The spot of the infection.
- Your skin tone.
This makes diagnosing by the rash alone more difficult, especially if the patients rash doesnt present with a telltale target like formation. Alternative formations include:

Stages And Symptoms Of Lyme Disease
Lyme disease rash is one of the first of many Lyme disease symptoms. They tend to appear in stages and without proper treatment can be disabling. If you get Lyme without the Lyme disease rash be careful to watch for symptoms early on after a tick bite. The three stages areearly localized, early disseminated, and late disseminated. Here are the symptoms according to stage:
Early Localized
These symptoms appear within three to up to thirty days after you are bitten by a tick. The actual spot where the bite occurred may clear up in about one or two days, but the symptoms can last a few weeks.
- Bullseye or other rash at the site of bite or another spot on the body
- Fatigue
- Appearance of one or more rashes anywhere on the body
- Bells Palsy
- Headaches
- Dizziness
Early Disseminated
The onset of symptoms usually take a few weeks to a few months to clear up. They may go away on their own without treatment, but most likely will progress and become severe. It is not recommended to leave Lyme untreated. If you have any of the above symptoms, see a doctor right away.
Late Disseminated
If Lyme symptoms are not treated promptly or at all, 60 percent of cases go into disseminated Lyme. This can cause some severe disabling symptoms such as:
- Joint pain
- Tingling in hands and feet
- Numbness
- Memory problems
This stage begins within a few months after the bite, but can still appear years later if the infection is not completely treated.

A telling sign of Lyme disease is a red, circular or oval rash that expands over time like a bulls-eye. Doctors call it erythema migrans. Can Lyme Disease Be Prevented
Not all cases of Lyme disease can be prevented. But you can help protect your family from tick bites. If you go into an area where ticks live, be sure to:
- Stay in the middle of the trail, instead of going through high grass or the woods.
- Wear closed shoes or boots, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants. Tuck pant legs into shoes or boots to prevent ticks from crawling up legs.
- Use an insect repellent.
- Consider treating clothing and gear with permethrin to repel ticks. When used properly, permethrin is safe for all ages. But don’t use it on clothing or other material a child may suck on or chew.
- Wear light-colored clothing to help you see ticks more easily.
- Shower and wash hair after being outside to remove ticks before they attach.

Stage 2 And 3 Lyme Rashes
During stages 2 and 3 of Lyme disease, rashes may also be present. During stage 2, the rash will take roughly one to six months to appear. It will be markedly different from stage 1 and appear as small oval-shaped rashes, typically appearing on various parts of the body such as the face, legs, and arms. The center of a stage 2 Lyme disease rash may also be darker in the center or appear bluish with a clear center. In contrast with stage 1 rashes, stage 2 skin lesions are not likely to grow as the disease progresses.
Stage 3 Lyme disease does not often encompass rashes however, if skin changes do occur, they will typically appear on the hands and feet. Symptoms of skin changes in stage 3 Lyme disease can include pain, redness, and swelling. If the infection is severe, stage 3 will present with some skin symptoms such as:
- Hardening, thinning, or tearing of the skin
- Hair loss around the affected area
- Sweat gland loss
In very rare cases, lymphoma tumors may form on the skin.
Is There A Cure For Lyme Disease
Antibiotics can cure Lyme disease. Different stages of disease may be treated with different antibiotics. Treatment choices also depend on the areas of the body involved. Oral amoxicillin , cefuroxime axetil , and doxycycline are often used to treat the early stages of Lyme disease. A bull’s-eye skin rash after a tick bite is a reason to see the doctor urgently for treatment. The rash typically resolves in about 1 or 2 weeks with antibiotic treatment. Intravenous medications such as ceftriaxone may be necessary to treat later stages of Lyme disease.

Welcome to another Inside Lyme Podcast. I am your host Dr. Daniel Cameron. In this episode, I will be discussing a question Im asked frequently: What does a Lyme disease rash look like? As a new study has found, the erythma migrans rash can appear differently based on several factors.
The study by Rebman and colleagues, entitled The presenting characteristics of erythema migrans vary by age, sex, duration, and body location, was published in Infection in March 2021.¹ It addressed a frequently asked question: What does a Lyme disease rash look like?
The erythema migrans rash , considered a definitive sign of Lyme disease, is often mistakenly thought to appear similar in all individuals a circular red lesion which expands to at least 2 inches.
But as Rebman and colleagues report, a Lyme disease rash can look different based on several factors and does not always appear as the familiar Bulls-eye rash. In fact, the authors suggest that relying solely on a Bulls-eye appearance, when evaluating a rash for possible Lyme disease can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
What Are The Symptoms And Signs Of Lyme Disease
There are three distinct phases of Lyme disease. Each phase involves different parts of the body.
- 1. Early localized disease causes skin rashes and redness.
- 2. Early disseminated disease affects the nervous system and heart. People in this stage may have palsies that exhibit paralysis and tremors. A rare but potentially life-threatening bacterial infection called meningitis may occur in this stage. Meningitis affects the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord .
- 3. Late disease involves arthritis and neurological issues. During this stage damage to nerves of sensation and movement can occur.

Seek Medical Care Early To Prevent Lyme Disease From Progressing
Its easy to get bit by a tick and not know it. Most people dont feel a tick on their skin or the bite. Checking your skin for ticks after spending time outdoors can help you find a tick and remove it.
Removing a tick can prevent Lyme disease. A tick must be attached to your skin for at least 36 hours to infect you with the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
Its not always possible to find a tick, so its important to pay close attention to your skin. If you notice any signs of Lyme disease or develop a rash, get medical care right away. Ticks can cause other serious diseases, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Does A Tick Bite Always Cause A Rash
Youve probably heard of the classic bullseye rash, which is one of the most distinct symptoms of Lyme disease. This circular rash is dark in the center and expands outward, like a bullseye, appearing about a week after the bite on any part of the body. It doesnt always look like that, though.
You may have a crusty spot with a splotch of redness around it that gets bigger, bluish rashes, or a red, oval plaque, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
Catch is, this rash only appears 70 to 80% of the time, says the CDC. Remember that not all ticks carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease there are other types of rashes associated with other tick-borne illnesses. For instance, Rocky Mountain spotted fever can cause a red, speckled rash that appears first on wrists and ankles.
Its also important to keep in mind that rashes can be tough to distinguish from one another. The CDC has a whole page on rashes that resemble the bullseye associated with Lyme, but arent. These include large, itchy rashes, the ringworm fungus, and hives. If youre concerned about any rash or are worried you may have been bitten by a tick , call your doctor. In certain circumstances, they can prescribe a course of preventative antibiotics if Lyme disease is suspected or you live in a state with a high risk of Lyme.

Does Lyme Disease Rash Go Away
Yes, the Lyme disease rash can go away, and sometimes, with some people, it can return. The presence of the rash is proof positive that Borrelia was transmitted, however, the absence of the rash means nothing. A rash, or erythema migrans, occurs in fewer than 50% of people who contract Lyme disease,

You can find a tick bite anywhere. However, although they can and do attach to any part of the body, there are certain body parts they more commonly move toward, like the hairline, or in tucked-away places, like the armpits, groin, and behind knees, says Dill.
