What Are The Symptoms Of Chronic Lyme Disease
Lyme disease does not affect any two people in the exact same way. Early detection, however, can be difficult. Lyme IS the most prevalent tick borne disease in the states and it is increasing in incidence year to year. Yet the Center for Disease Control estimates only 10% of the cases of Lyme disease are reported annually. This is because only 50% to 68% of patients have a clear bulls-eye rash. Only 26% ever see the tick that gives them Lyme disease. Most people do not know that a flu in the late spring, summer or early fall can be a sign of Lyme disease. Most doctors do not know that Lyme exists anywhere but the northeast part of the United States. So early treatment is a challenge. I try during tick season in Northern California to have short appointments to check out a tick bite or erythema migrans rash, in order to effect early treatment.

How Do You Test For Lyme
The most common Lyme tests look for antibodies developed from exposure to the bacteria, but theyre notoriously inaccurate, with numerous published reports in the medical literature of patients with severe, progressive illness despite normal-appearing tests. There is also considerable debate about the use of CDC criteria as a diagnostic standard for Lyme, as there are 10 times as many Lyme cases being diagnosed as are captured by its criteria.
Direct detection tests for Lyme are available, like polymerase chain reaction which amplifies DNA of the pathogen so it can be found however, given the fastidious nature of these bacteria and their broad spectrum of strain and species, even PCR, which has such high sensitivity for some infections such as hepatitis C and HIV, frequently fails to reliably detect the presence of Lyme bacteria.

International Lyme And Associated Diseases Society
The International Lyme and Associated Disease Society is a nonprofit, multi-disciplinary, international medical society aimed at advancing the treatment, research, and education efforts of Lyme and associated diseases. ILADS provides training to physicians who want to enhance their skill set to evaluate and treat Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Physicians who successfully complete the training requirements established by ILADS are known as Lyme-literate medical doctors, or LLMDs.

What Is Chronic Lyme Disease
Chronic Lyme disease is initially introduced to the body by different strains and species of Borrelia bacteria, most often, Borrelia burgdorferi. It is often named, The Great Imitator, because its symptoms have been known to mimic hundreds of other illnesses.

The Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete is an evasive organism which can penetrate virtually any organ or system in the body, including the brain and central nervous system, joints, muscles and heart. Lyme disease symptoms may be similar to other medical conditions, making diagnosing a challenge. For this reason, Lyme disease and syphilis have both been coined the great imitator.

Patients with Lyme disease have been incorrectly diagnosed with: multiple sclerosis , fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune diseases including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis , polymyalgia rheumatica, thyroid disease, and psychiatric disorders, among others.
Fatigue, insomnia, and myalgias are seen in both Fibromyalgia and Lyme disease. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome symptoms are often seen in Lyme disease patients and include severe fatigue, impaired memory and concentration, sleep disturbance, myalgias, and arthralgias.
Steere et al. described Lyme disease cases that were misdiagnosed as Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis .
Nowakowski and Feder reported cases misdiagnosed as cellulitis.
Plotkin described a 39-year-old male with a retropopliteal rash that progressed, within three weeks to Lyme disease, with a loss of consciousness and a complete heart block that required insertion of a transvenous cardiac pacemaker.

The Need
Tick-borne diseases are multi-system illnesses involving the skin, muscles, joints, the heart, peripheral nerves, and/or the brain. While early Lyme disease usually responds well to rapid treatment, later Lyme disease manifestations can be more challenging to treat. The CDC estimates that there are 476,000 newly diagnosed and treated cases annually. Each year, despite antibiotic treatment, approximately 10-20% of these new infections will lead to distressing and potentially disabling symptoms, such as severe fatigue, joint and muscle pain, neurologic symptoms, irritability, depression, sleep disturbance, and cognitive problems, that may last for months or years. Because these tick-borne infections can trigger disturbing physical and neuropsychiatric symptoms, clinicians without specialized training in tick-borne diseases may be uncertain how to help these patients. Our Daughter Got Her Life Back
Our pre-teen daughter had always been active in sports and engaged at school. Suddenly she was complaining of aches and pains and was exhausted all the time. Other Pathogens To Blame
Shor and his co-authors, including Maloney, propose that the lingering symptoms are caused by several pathogens from the Borrelia burgdorferi family or other tick-borne pathogens.
Nardelli said theres a variety of symptoms and severity in Lyme disease patients, and those symptoms can be caused by the inflammatory responses against the microbes.
Inflammation is a huge part of the immune response. Its one of the frontline defenses we have, and it has this negative connotation, but it is intended for good, he said. Your immune response trying to kill the bug and in doing so, can cause damage, essentially.
Some theories suggest that variants of the Lyme bacteria are resistant to antibiotics. Others argue that chronic Lyme is caused by a powerful immune reaction or it may even trigger an autoimmune disease. The central neural networks may be altered, having a significant impact on symptoms or a combination of these factors.
Nardelli is investigating how the immune system is affected by the Lyme bacterium, research that could contribute to treatments for people with prolonged reactions after the infection. He said science can be a slow process of acquiring new knowledge, and its tough for patients who are suffering with no clear answers.
That can lead them to seek out untrustworthy practitioners or fall for costly treatments that dont work. You go out and find doctors that diagnose everything as Lyme disease, Nardelli said.
