STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT and DOVER, DELAWARE
Global Lyme Alliance , the leading 501 dedicated to conquering Lyme and other tick-borne diseases through research, education and awareness, today announced it has partnered with the state of Delawares Lyme Disease Education Oversight Board and launched an online Lyme disease course for physicians and other healthcare professionals. This Continuing Medical Education certified activity presents and discusses recent advances in the management of Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses.
Among the topics covered are the epidemiology of Lyme, diagnostic challenges, common co-infections and routine recommendations for the testing and treatment of Lyme disease infections based on current guidelines. The incidence of Lyme and tick-borne disease in Delaware and nationwide is alarming and causes so much suffering, said Sara Tyghter, GLA Director of Education and Outreach. Can Lyme Disease Be Prevented
Not all cases of Lyme disease can be prevented. But you can help protect your family from tick bites. If you go into an area where ticks live, be sure to:
- Stay in the middle of the trail, instead of going through high grass or the woods.
- Wear closed shoes or boots, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants. Tuck pant legs into shoes or boots to prevent ticks from crawling up legs.
- Use an insect repellent.
- Consider treating clothing and gear with permethrin to repel ticks. When used properly, permethrin is safe for all ages. But don’t use it on clothing or other material a child may suck on or chew.
- Wear light-colored clothing to help you see ticks more easily.
- Shower and wash hair after being outside to remove ticks before they attach.
Who Gets Lyme Disease
Anyone bitten by an infected deer tick can get Lyme disease. Most U.S. cases of Lyme disease happen in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin. But Lyme disease is found in other parts of the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia too.

How Is Lyme Disease Diagnosed
It can be hard for doctors to diagnose Lyme disease because:
- The tick bites and rash might not be noticed.
- Many early symptoms seem like the flu or other illnesses.
- Blood tests are not always accurate, especially early in the illness.
Doctors can diagnose early Lyme disease if they see a tick bite and rash. Blood tests usually aren’t helpful in the first month of Lyme disease.
To diagnose late Lyme disease, doctors:
- Ask about symptoms.
- Do blood tests that look for signs of Lyme disease.
Depending on the symptoms, doctors might order other tests, such as a spinal tap, which looks at the fluid around the brain and spinal cord.

Lyme Disease Task Force Unveils Proposals To Fight Illness
Noting that Delaware had the sixth-highest incidence of Lyme disease in the United States in 2013, a bipartisan group of legislators, advocates and community members unveiled Thursday a series of proposals to prevent the spread of Lyme, raise awareness and improve treatment and coverage.
In response to Delaware having a high incidence of Lyme disease, House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf and Sen. Ernie Lopez sponsored Senate Joint Resolution 10 last year, creating the Lyme Disease Prevention Task Force, which was designed to create a unified strategy to combat Lyme disease in Delaware.
Lyme disease is an epidemic in Delaware, said Sen. Lopez, R-Lewes. With new research showing the long-term problems it can cause, Im pleased to be working in a collaborative manner to increase awareness and help eradicate this terrible disease.
The task force, which included healthcare professionals, DNREC officials and residents suffering from Lyme, produced a report that identified several initiatives that can be undertaken to improve Lyme disease prevention, awareness, treatment and coverage. The task forces recommendations include creating two working groups to study ways to improve insurance coverage and to research tick biology and ecology, and legislation to help better address ticks and educate medical professionals about Lyme disease.
Specifically, the proposals the task force announced Thursday are:

- Avoiding tick-infested areas, using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly, and landscaping

Should You Get A Test For Lyme Disease
If Lyme disease is treated soon after a tick bite, the outlook is great. Most cases of Lyme disease respond to a 2- to 4-week round of antibiotics.
If Lyme disease goes untreated, it can be more difficult to eliminate. For some, it can lead to inflammation of the joints, heart, and nervous system. Progression of the disease, and its severity, can vary from person to person.
Lyme disease is staged in categories: acute, early disseminated, and late disseminated. Later stages of Lyme disease may involve multiple systems in the body.
The most common sign of Lyme disease is an erythema migrans, or bulls-eye rash. The rash often appears after a delay of 3 to 30 days after the tick bite, according to the
Research from 2014 suggests that the bulls-eye rash may last for 3 to 4 weeks. About 80 percent of people with Lyme disease have a single erythema migrans rash. But the bacteria can spread and lead to multiple rashes, indicating disseminated Lyme disease.

With disseminated Lyme disease, symptoms can also include neurologic conditions, such as cranial nerve palsy and meningitis that mimics aseptic meningitis. Heart inflammation can also be a sign of Lyme disease.

WILMINGTON, Del. As hunters head into the woods this fall, those in Delaware and Vermont may have to be more aware than others: The states have the highest rate of Lyme disease infection in the nation.
Infected ticks, which draw most of the nastiness from infected mice and deer, transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Untreated, the disease can cause problems in joints, the heart and the nervous system.
In the most recent figures from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for 2011, Delaware led the nation with more than 84 confirmed cases for every 100,000 residents. Vermont had 76 cases per 100,000 residents.
In 2012, Delaware will report 669 confirmed cases, a drop of about 200 from 2011.
But that may be only scratching the surface. The CDC said last week that recent studies point to a much higher prevalence of Lyme disease than officially has been recognized. Typically, the CDC estimated 30,000 cases a year in the United States. The true incidence probably is 10 times greater 300,000 CDC officials say now.
And those are just the human patients.
That doesn’t mean keeping the kids inside, and it doesn’t mean hunters or hikers should find other pursuits.
It does mean smarter preparation and follow-up.
