How Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy is Different

    • The first major difference between Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy and synthetic hormones is that Bioidentical Hormones are created from natural plant based extracts.
    • The natural hormones in these plants remain unchanged during the compounding process because they are identical to the natural hormonal structure that exists in the human body.
    • Bioidentical Hormones replace synthetic patented pharmaceutical drugs that don’t work as well and have significant life-threatening side effects.
    • For most people on Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, the similar cellular structure means that the compound is metabolized in the body faster and easier.
    • With their hormones in balance, men and women in the 30s, 40s, and beyond are able to enjoy renewed energy, better health, and a more positive outlook on life.

What If Your Lyme Disease Test Is Positive

Its important to note that a positive result doesnt mean you have a diagnosis of Lyme disease. The tests will show that antibodies are present in your blood, but a physician will need to order another type of test before you get an official diagnosis.

If someone gets a positive at-home test, definitely see your doctor, says Dr. Puja Uppal, a board certified family medicine physician and the chief medical officer at Think Healthy.

A physician will likely order both an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and a Western blot test, which check for antibodies specific to Borrelia burgdorferi. They will consider the results of both these tests, along with your symptoms, to make an accurate diagnosis.

    The Dangers Of Misdiagnosis

Lyme Disease affects more than 300,000 people per year, but experts believe that number to be much higher since its so often misdiagnosed. Standard chronic Lyme Disease treatment options are often endless, ineffective, and very costly since Lyme Disease so difficult to detect and diagnose properly.

Misdiagnosis is more common than most people realize. Lyme Disease is often confused with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Fatigue, and other autoimmune diseases. Misdiagnosis gives the disease-causing infection, characteristic of Lyme Disease, the opportunity to spread and cause more severe or chronic health issues. These issues can often affect the skin, joints, heart, and nervous system. Thats why choosing a Lyme Disease physician is critical for effectively treating this disease before irreparable damage is done.

    • Stage 1

This is often called the “early localized” stage of the disease. Symptoms start a few days to a few weeks after coming in contact with the disease. The symptoms of stage 1 Lyme disease are similar to the flu. If the sufferer doesn’t realize or remember they were bitten, it makes it difficult to link to a bite.

    Can Lyme Disease Be Prevented

Not all cases of Lyme disease can be prevented. But you can help protect your family from tick bites. If you go into an area where ticks live, be sure to:

    • Stay in the middle of the trail, instead of going through high grass or the woods.
    • Wear closed shoes or boots, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants. Tuck pant legs into shoes or boots to prevent ticks from crawling up legs.
    • Use an insect repellent.
    • Consider treating clothing and gear with permethrin to repel ticks. When used properly, permethrin is safe for all ages. But don’t use it on clothing or other material a child may suck on or chew.
    • Wear light-colored clothing to help you see ticks more easily.
    • Shower and wash hair after being outside to remove ticks before they attach.

    Who Gets Lyme Disease

    How Is Lyme Disease Diagnosed

It can be hard for doctors to diagnose Lyme disease because:

    • The tick bites and rash might not be noticed.
    • Many early symptoms seem like the flu or other illnesses.
    • Blood tests are not always accurate, especially early in the illness.

Doctors can diagnose early Lyme disease if they see a tick bite and rash. Blood tests usually aren’t helpful in the first month of Lyme disease.

To diagnose late Lyme disease, doctors:

    • Ask about symptoms.
    • Do blood tests that look for signs of Lyme disease.

Depending on the symptoms, doctors might order other tests, such as a spinal tap, which looks at the fluid around the brain and spinal cord.

Lyme Disease Task Force Unveils Proposals To Fight Illness

Noting that Delaware had the sixth-highest incidence of Lyme disease in the United States in 2013, a bipartisan group of legislators, advocates and community members unveiled Thursday a series of proposals to prevent the spread of Lyme, raise awareness and improve treatment and coverage.

In response to Delaware having a high incidence of Lyme disease, House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf and Sen. Ernie Lopez sponsored Senate Joint Resolution 10 last year, creating the Lyme Disease Prevention Task Force, which was designed to create a unified strategy to combat Lyme disease in Delaware.

Lyme disease is an epidemic in Delaware, said Sen. Lopez, R-Lewes. With new research showing the long-term problems it can cause, Im pleased to be working in a collaborative manner to increase awareness and help eradicate this terrible disease.

The task force, which included healthcare professionals, DNREC officials and residents suffering from Lyme, produced a report that identified several initiatives that can be undertaken to improve Lyme disease prevention, awareness, treatment and coverage. The task forces recommendations include creating two working groups to study ways to improve insurance coverage and to research tick biology and ecology, and legislation to help better address ticks and educate medical professionals about Lyme disease.

Specifically, the proposals the task force announced Thursday are:

    What is chronic Lyme disease?

Chronic Lyme disease is widely unrecognized and unknown in today’s popular contemporary medical field – in fact it creates defensiveness and denial when mentioned in many circles.

Chronic illness in and of itself has long existed and acknowledged throughout the world. On Ask.com, the following answer appeared after asking what is chronic illness:

A chronic disease is a disease that will last for a long time or will come and go, but always be a part of your life. Some chronic diseases include Fibromyalgia, COPD, diabetes, cancers and the different types of arthritis.

When I look up chronic on dictionary.com, I get words like “constant, habitual, continuing for a long time or recurring frequently, having a long duration.” The Word English Dictionary adds “developing slowly, very bad and very serious” to the list.

Should You Get A Test For Lyme Disease

    Lyme and Reason: Susan Green

If Lyme disease is treated soon after a tick bite, the outlook is great. Most cases of Lyme disease respond to a 2- to 4-week round of antibiotics.

If Lyme disease goes untreated, it can be more difficult to eliminate. For some, it can lead to inflammation of the joints, heart, and nervous system. Progression of the disease, and its severity, can vary from person to person.

Lyme disease is staged in categories: acute, early disseminated, and late disseminated. Later stages of Lyme disease may involve multiple systems in the body.

The most common sign of Lyme disease is an erythema migrans, or bulls-eye rash. The rash often appears after a delay of 3 to 30 days after the tick bite, according to the

Research from 2014 suggests that the bulls-eye rash may last for 3 to 4 weeks. About 80 percent of people with Lyme disease have a single erythema migrans rash. But the bacteria can spread and lead to multiple rashes, indicating disseminated Lyme disease.

While a rash is the most common symptom of Lyme disease, it isnt the only one.

With disseminated Lyme disease, symptoms can also include neurologic conditions, such as cranial nerve palsy and meningitis that mimics aseptic meningitis. Heart inflammation can also be a sign of Lyme disease.

If youre experiencing any of these signs or symptoms, an at-home test may help you identify Lyme disease. With the click of a button, a test can be shipped to your front door.

As the warm weather approaches, getting outdoors tends to be number one on many peoples minds. Lyme disease is something that is typically not on most peoples minds. Well, it should be.

Rehoboth Beach native Abby Webb is someone who can tell you this first hand. Webb was first diagnosed with the disease at age 20. After several tests, a Western blot test confirmed Lyme disease. At 29, Webb continues to battle the disease and spread awareness in every way possible.

Lyme disease is an infection cause by Borrelia burgdorferi, a type of bacterium called a spirochete that is carried by deer ticks. An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the humans and animals it bites. Untreated, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, and can cause a number of symptoms, some of which are severe .

Lyme disease is most common on the east coast, and is even considered abundant the more north you travel. There are several signs and symptoms of this disease and they typically occur in three stages which makes it even more difficult for doctors to diagnose.

According to TeensHealth, the three stages of the disease are as follows:

  • A circular rash at the site of the tick bite, typically within 1-2 weeks of infection, often is the first sign of infection. Although its considered typical of Lyme disease, many people never develop one.

Delaware Vermont Have Highest Lyme Disease Rates

    • 13 states account for 96%25 of all the Lyme disease across the USA
    • Dogs also can be carriers though they get the disease at lower rates than humans
    • The key%3A Find any tick before it has latched onto you for a day or longer

WILMINGTON, Del. As hunters head into the woods this fall, those in Delaware and Vermont may have to be more aware than others: The states have the highest rate of Lyme disease infection in the nation.

Infected ticks, which draw most of the nastiness from infected mice and deer, transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Untreated, the disease can cause problems in joints, the heart and the nervous system.

In the most recent figures from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for 2011, Delaware led the nation with more than 84 confirmed cases for every 100,000 residents. Vermont had 76 cases per 100,000 residents.

In 2012, Delaware will report 669 confirmed cases, a drop of about 200 from 2011.

But that may be only scratching the surface. The CDC said last week that recent studies point to a much higher prevalence of Lyme disease than officially has been recognized. Typically, the CDC estimated 30,000 cases a year in the United States. The true incidence probably is 10 times greater 300,000 CDC officials say now.

And those are just the human patients.

That doesn’t mean keeping the kids inside, and it doesn’t mean hunters or hikers should find other pursuits.

It does mean smarter preparation and follow-up.
