About This 1909 Mansion For Sale In Old Lyme Connecticut
Built by Old Lyme Colony artist Harry Hoffman and his wife Beatrice Pope, Chuluota was constructed between 1908-1910 and designed to replicate an Italian Villa by Boston architects Magee and Rowe. This majestic, baronial like manor has elements that would be impossible to duplicate today. Constructed with local fieldstone and perched atop of Harding Hill and almost entirely surrounded by Old Lyme Preserve land, this iconic property boasts grandeur and privacy.
A massive wrap around porch welcomes guests to this remarkable home which greets its inhabitants with 9+ ceiling, 4 fireplaces, and displays unusual and intriguing elements. Most of the light fixtures were acquired in Spain when Harry and Beatrice travelled there during the two years that the house was being built. The stone fireplace in Harrys studio has a massive fabricated mantle with lion-heads.The music room has hand-stenciled walls by the artists wife, Beatrice.
But, surely, the highlight of the home is the painted panels in the living room and the upstairs bedroom. Like the tradition at the Florence Griswold Museum for Old Lyme Colony artists, Harry chose to paint various, artistic scenes in the wood panels of his home which still remain on display today.
A custom kitchen, mudroom area, Koi pond, and marble baths enhance the home. One bedroom carriage house over a detached 4 car garage and greenhouse sit on the property. Fifty year architectural shingle roof is only a few months old. Agent owner
