Lyme Disease: Justin Bieber’s Tick
Justin Bieber recently announced that for the last couple of years hes been battling Lyme disease. Lyme disease, which is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, can be transmitted to humans if theyre bitten by an infected tick. In fact, its one of the most common tick-borne diseases in the west. An estimated 300,000 people in the US are diagnosed with it every year. The disease causes a range of debilitating symptoms, which can include severe headaches, neck stiffness, arthritis, joint pain and rashes. These symptoms can last for months or even years.
After being bitten, most people develop a red, circular rash, which may slowly expand beyond the bite site. Only around 20-30% of people will develop the characteristic bullseye rash. Without prompt treatment, the bacteria will spread from the bite site to tissues and organs, leading to additional skin lesions and a range of debilitating and persisting symptoms, such as pain, fatigue, memory problems and arthritis.
Perhaps alarmingly, instances of Lyme disease have actually become more common. In England and Wales the number of cases has increased from 1,134 in 2016 to 1,579 cases in 2017. The increase might be explained by a number of factors, including global warming and increasing wildlife populations. Better diagnostic tools and increased awareness might also explain the surge in Lyme disease diagnoses.
Common Lyme Disease Symptoms
Once the bacteria has been in your bloodstream for an extended amount of time, you can begin developing early symptoms of the disease. Signs of infection usually appear within 714 days of the bite, but in some cases may take months to surface.
An estimated 8090% of Lyme disease cases begin with a rash that appears near the location of the bite and then spreads . People often describe it as warm to the touch and resembling a bullseye.
More serious symptoms often begin to appear just after the rash, including:
- Extreme fatigue
- Heart palpitations or other cardiac irregularities
- Joint pain or swelling
- Neurological issues, such as short-term memory loss, confusion and disorientation
- Severe headaches
- Tingling, pain or numbness in limbs and extremities
If you suspect an infection, seek out care from a physician immediately. Early treatment can prevent these symptoms from causing lasting damage.

Testing For Lyme Disease
Lyme is a mysterious one that has no conclusive, definitive test thats totally accurate for diagnosis. Furthermore, standard tests cant separate a past disease from an active form. This basically means patients can get false negatives, with underdeveloped antibodies not showing on the test to suggest Lyme infection, or false positives, with antibodies lingering in asymptomatic individuals whove already been treated, replicating an active disease.
On the NHS, many patients presenting with unexplained symptoms arent unable to get tested as is common with invisible illnesses, some may feel theyre being fobbed off by doctors or find that the disease completely overlooked as a possibility. When it is tested for, the test is often less effective in the early stages. When limited to an initial test that may provide a false negative, patients are left between a rock and a hard place, unable to get any further without going elsewhere for testing.
There are usually two stages employed to testing in the UK. The first is for ELISA, or EIA, screening. Only if this test is positive does the screening procedure usually progress on to stage two. This second part involves a laboratory undertaking an immunoblot test to pick out any false positive ELISA results and confirm the presence of Lyme.
The irony here is that in the first few weeks, tests may not pick up on Lyme as antibodies havent had enough time to develop, and yet the earlier Lyme is detected and treated, the better.
Why Do Doctors Not Believe In Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which is usually spread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Early recognition and treatment of Lyme disease is important to preventing serious health problems. Lyme disease is a serious illness that can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which are not specific to Lyme disease.
Many people who are infected with Lyme disease do not have any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can be very mild and go away on their own within a few weeks. More serious symptoms can develop if the disease is not treated early. Lyme disease is diagnosed based on a combination of symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination.
There is no blood test that can always determine if someone has Lyme disease. The most common test for Lyme disease, the ELISA test, can produce false-negative results in up to 50% of cases. This is because the bacteria that cause Lyme disease can hide inside cells, making them difficult to detect. The tests that are used to diagnose Lyme disease are not always accurate, which is why many doctors do not believe in Lyme disease.
There is also no cure for Lyme disease. The most effective treatment for Lyme disease is antibiotics, which need to be administered early in the course of the disease. If Lyme disease is not treated early, it can become a chronic illness that can be difficult to treat.

What Should I Do If I Am Bitten By A Tick
If you are ever in a situation where you are bitten by a tick, the Cleveland Clinic recommends tugging gently but firmly near the head of the tick until it releases its hold on the skin.
Take caution to avoid crushing or handling a tick with bare fingers, and swab the bite thoroughly with antiseptic to prevent bacterial infection.
Do not squeeze the tick’s body with your fingers or tweezers, or use kerosene, petroleum jelly or cigarette butts to try to remove the tick from your skin.
