Wyatt Sexton Diagnosed With Lyme Disease

Tallahassee, Fla. Florida State junior quarterback Wyatt Sexton flew to Hermitage, PA, Thursday to consult with Dr. Chandra Swami, the Sexton family confirmed through FSUs Sports Information Office on Saturday. A world renowned specialist in the field of Lyme Disease, Dr. Swami confirmed the diagnosis of Lyme Disease, which has infected Sextons organs. Dr. Swami has recommended intensive i.v. anti-biotic therapy over a period of months. The disease is curable, but the estimated recovery time for his advanced stage of infection is several months.

In a statement released through FSUs Sports Information Office, Wyatts parents, Joy and Billy Sexton, said: We appreciate the many expressions of support for our son shown by those in our community, church and the Florida State football family. It has been a very difficult time for Wyatt. It has also been hurtful to Wyatt and our family to see some media reports that were simply not true. We expect him to fully recover. In the meantime, we ask that his privacy be respected.

Sexton is a 6-4, 215, junior who emerged from spring practice as the first team quarterback for the Seminoles. FSU will begin practice on August 9. Sexton redshirted as a true freshman in 2002, but the NCAA provides a process for obtaining additional redshirt seasons, which would leave him with two years of eligibility.

QUOTE FROM DR. S. CHANDRA SWAMI

In Good Times And In Bad

Medical hardships spilled into college life. Spuhler found hope and strength from within herself and her familyher parents and two brothers, Matt and Bryan. But her joints were in chronic pain. She was exhausted, depressed, pale and ill.

People teased me because of the way I walked, Spuhler says. People stared. They made comments. They got annoyed of how I was always sick. And I never had energy to go out.

Then, at a moment when she needed it most, Spuhler was invited to a get-together at a friends house. Feeling uplifted, she pulled together all the energy she had and went. Thats the night she met John, her future husband.

That night, John asked Spuhler out on a date. A few days later, they met up and just talked. Spuhler told John about her Lyme disease. He was caring and empathetic and told her hed help her through it.

John kept his word, driving Spuhler to appointments, carrying her up the stairs, and even tying her shoes for her.

He gave me the faith I needed, Spuhler says.

That faith brought Spuhler and John to a happy ending. Between 2006 and 2007, Spuhlers symptoms tapered then disappeared completely. Joseph declared Spuhler free from Lyme. And, in 2009, John and Spuhler said I do.

When we said in sickness and in health, everyone knew how true it was, Spuhler says.

Today, Spuhler and John have three sons, 4-year-old Jack, 3-year-old Owen and Connor John Spuhler, who was born in October.

Bullskin Man Returning To Normal Life After Three

Eric Painter, of Bullskin Township, and physical education teacher in the Connellsville Area School District, is leading a rather healthy life after suffering the worst effects of Lyme disease for nearly three years.

Lyme disease has overwhelmed the northeastern states in America over the last several years, and here in Pennsylvania alone over 10,000 new cases were reported last year.

But as local doctors and patients are learning, diagnosing the disease can be a bit of a challenge.

Eric Painter of Bullskin Township began his Lyme disease journey in 2010.

At first, it felt like I had the flu for probably two weeks, and then it started to subside, but after a week or two the same symptoms came back, and this continued to be a cycle, said Painter, who is a physical education teacher in the Connellsville Area School District.

Most days he would go to work, come home and sleep until 7 p.m. when he would get up to eat dinner before going back to sleep again for the night.

I did this for two or three years, Painter said. The night before I got sick, I was running 10 miles a day, three weeks into my sickness, I could barely climb steps. I was completely debilitated.

After time, his symptoms began to get a little more bizarre.

Then, one day he was driving his daughter to a school event in a town in which he was very familiar, but got lost.

Ive lived here all my life, but I had no idea where I was or where I was going, he said.
