Diagnosis & Treatment Of Lyme Disease

If you think you may have Lymes Disease the skilled professionals here at our Danbury clinic will perform a blood test to test antibodies for bacteria that may be infected. This test, called the Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test is used to detect traces of Lymes Disease. If you test positive with the ELISA then follow up testing will include a western-bolt test which helps to identify further issues. Its important, however, to note that some infected people with all the symptoms could very well test as a false-positive. This is typically due to a number of factors including immunity and the fact that too short a period of time has lapsed since the individual was first infected. The most accurate test results will normally appear within 3 weeks.

If a Lymes Disease diagnosis is caught early on in the very early stages , most people will recover quickly. If, however, a tick bite is left untreated for a longer period of time, there may be additional treatments required in order to alleviate pain.

How Is Lyme Disease Diagnosed

It can be hard for doctors to diagnose Lyme disease because:

  • The tick bites and rash might not be noticed.
  • Many early symptoms seem like the flu or other illnesses.
  • Blood tests are not always accurate, especially early in the illness.

Doctors can diagnose early Lyme disease if they see a tick bite and rash. Blood tests usually arent helpful in the first month of Lyme disease.

To diagnose late Lyme disease, doctors:

  • Ask about symptoms.
  • Do blood tests that look for signs of Lyme disease.

Depending on the symptoms, doctors might order other tests, such as a spinal tap, which looks at the fluid around the brain and spinal cord.

In the spring and throughout July, a pilot program had started at Danbury Hospital, aimed at studying Lyme disease.

Amber Butler, who works for the Laura and Dale Kutnick Lyme Disease Research Center along with physicians assistants at the emergency room, is part of a research team. The research team recruits patients coming in to the E.R. with Lyme disease to participate in a study to help create a database.

Lyme Disease Introduction – Johns Hopkins – (1 of 5)
