What Is Lymepak And How Does It Work

Lymepak is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of early Lyme disease due to a bacteria known as Borrelia burgdorferi in adults and children 8 years of age and older weighing 99 pounds and above.

It is not known if Lymepak is safe and effective in children less than 8 years of age or weighing under 99 lbs .

For Memory Concentration And Focus

Improving memory is a challenge. In Lyme disease, short-term memory problems and word-retrieval problems are common. These often improve substantially with appropriate antibiotic therapy. Over time, most patients regain their cognitive function.

When memory is a problem, consider that this could due to a primary problem with attention or with mood. An individual who can’t focus won’t be able to remember because he/she didn’t “attend” to the item in the first place. This happens to all of us when we hear someone’s name at a party if we don’t focus on the name and perhaps make a mental association to the name to enhance memory storage, we will forget that name within minutes. Patients with depression often experience problems with memory and verbal fluency when the depression is resolved, the memory and verbal fluency typically resolve as well.

  • Medications: Attention can be improved with certain medications, such as bupropion , atomoxetine , modafinil , or stimulants . Medications that temporarily slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease or memantine ) have not been studied in Lyme disease.
  • There is some evidence that online brain training programs can enhance concentration or processing speed.
  • Neurofeedback may be helpful in improving attention, as well as in improving sleep and reducing pain. This has been studied for migraines, fibromyalgia, and ADHD.

Is Lymepak Safe To Use While Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

  • Lymepak, like other tetracycline-class antibacterial drugs, may cause discoloration of deciduous teeth and reversible inhibition of bone growth when administered during the second and third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Available data from published studies over decades have not shown a difference in major birth defect risk compared to unexposed pregnancies with doxycycline exposure in the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • There are no available data on the risk of miscarriage following exposure to doxycycline in pregnancy.
  • Based on available published data, doxycycline is present in human milk.
  • There are no data that inform the levels of doxycycline in breastmilk, the effects on the breastfed infant, or the effects on milk production.
  • Because there are other antibacterial drug options available to treat Lyme disease in lactating women and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions, including tooth discoloration and inhibition of bone growth, advise patients that breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment withLymepak and for 5 days after the last dose.

Side Effects Of Doxycycline For Dogs

Doxycycline For Lyme

Dogs generally tolerate doxycycline well, but it is always a good idea to understand the possible side effects of a drug before you give your dog a new medication. The most common side effects are symptoms of GI upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Severe GI symptoms could be a sign of a doxycycline overdose, so be sure to call your vet.

Tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline can cause skeletal limb deformities in developing puppies in utero, posing a potential risk for pregnant mothers. In some cases, the benefits of using doxycycline outweigh the potential risks for pregnant mothers, but be sure to let your vet know if your dog is pregnant prior to treatment.

If your dog has a history of allergic reactions to antibiotics, especially antibiotics in the tetracycline family, make sure you mention this to your vet, as doxycycline could trigger a dangerous allergic reaction.

Can Lyme Disease Be Prevented Or Avoided

The best way to prevent Lyme disease is to avoid being bitten by ticks. When you are outdoors, follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid areas that are wooded, brushy, or have tall grass.
  • Walk in the center of trails.
  • Use an insect repellent with at least 20% DEET. It can be put on clothing or sparingly on the skin. Dont apply it to the face or hands of children.
  • Treat clothing, tents, or other gear with repellents containing 0.5% permethrin.
  • Wear light-colored clothing. This makes it easier to see and remove ticks from your clothes.
  • Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Tuck your pant legs into your socks or boots for added protection.

After you get home, check everything and everyone for ticks.

  • Bathe or shower as soon as you can to wash off any ticks that have not attached to you.
  • Check your entire body for ticks. Use a mirror for places you cant see. Check your children and your pets. Common tick locations include the back of the knees, groin area, underarms, ears, scalp, and the back of the neck.
  • Check any gear you used, including coats, backpacks, or tents.

Tumble dry clothes or blankets on high heat in the dryer for 10 to 15 minutes. This should kill any ticks. If clothes are dirty, wash them in hot water and dry on high heat for 60 minutes.

What Are The Uses Of Doxycycline For Dogs

Doxycycline is typically used to treat bacterial infections and infections caused by microorganisms. It is not effective against viral infections or fungal infections. Your vet might prescribe doxycycline to treat a present infection, or as precaution against a secondary bacterial infection, as is often the case with viral infections like canine parvovirus that leave dogs vulnerable to secondary bacterial infections.

Some examples of conditions veterinarians treat with doxycycline for dogs include:

  • Respiratory infections
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Leptospirosis

If your dogs condition is not on this list, dont worry. Doxycycline has a broad range of applications and can help treat many different types of bacterial infections and microorganisms that affect dogs.

How Long Doxycycline Stays In Your System

How to take a doxycycline with a tick bite

Doxycycline has a half-life of 14-24 hours, depending on factors such as age, weight, and dosage.

A half-life is the time it takes for the substance in your body to be reduced to half of the strength of the original dosage.

If your dose of doxycycline is 150 mg, for example, then it will take approximately 18-19 hours before it is reduced in the body by half and about 28-42 hours for the medication to be completely out of your system.

The half-life of your medication matters when it comes to other drugs or supplements you take that may interact with it, or when you want to consume substances that may alter how your body responds.

What Are The Side Effects Of Lyme Disease Treatments

Antibiotics, like all medications, have the potential for side effects. Any antibiotic can cause skin rashes, and if an itchy red rash develops while on antibiotics, a patient should see their physician. Sometimes symptoms worsen for the first few days on an antibiotic. This is called a Herxheimer reaction and occurs when the antibiotics start to kill the bacteria. In the first 24 to 48 hours, dead bacterial products stimulate the immune system to release inflammatory cytokines and chemokines that can cause increased fever and achiness. This should be transient and last no more than a day or two after the initiation of antibiotics.

The most common side effect of the penicillin antibiotics is diarrhea, and occasionally even serious cases caused by the bacteria Clostridium difficile. This bacterial overgrowth condition occurs because antibiotics kill the good bacteria in our gut. It can be helpful to use probiotics to restore the good bacteria and microbiome balance.

Summary Of Study Characteristics

Additional details regarding the strengths and limitations of included publications are provided in .

Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

The review is unclear regarding whether study selection was conducted in duplicate if the reviewers did not conduct study selection in duplicate then this could introduce bias into the review, with reduced quality and confidence in its results. Grey literature was not searched and content experts were not consulted, which may have omitted relevant data and introduced publication bias. This omission is of particular importance since publication bias was not assessed. The sources of funding for each included trial were not discussed and risk of bias from the selection of the reported result from multiple measurements or analyses was not assessed. These review characteristics may increase bias in: study selection search strategy risk of bias assessments and their impact on the meta-analysis, interpretation of results, and discussion sources of funding and conflicts of interest, which therefore decrease the confidence in the results of the systematic review.

Non-Randomized Study

Outcome measurement may have been influenced by knowledge of received intervention since the outcome assessors were aware of the intervention received by study participants and may therefore decrease confidence in the results of the study.
