Other Surprising Lyme Disease Symptoms

Alternative treatments for Lyme disease symptoms brings new hope to those suffering

So many people are walking around with inexplicable health conditions and baffling symptoms.

Conventional doctors are often perplexed by the striking range of symptoms, leading to severe misdiagnosis. Patients are often brushed off as hypochondriacs or having mental illnesses neither of which leads to a resolution.

The tsunami of symptoms is not some strange mystery illness. Its often simply Lyme Disease that can manifest as:

  • Flu-like symptoms Fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, and a headache may accompany the rash.
  • Joint pain If the infection is not treated, bouts of severe joint pain and swelling, weakness and arthritis may occur, particularly in the knees.
  • Unexplained Symptoms Brain Fog, malaise, fatigue, dizziness, aches and pains, headaches, anxiety, mood swings, depression, abdominal pains, nausea, diarrhea, sleep disturbances, stiff neck
  • Neurological problems In some cases, untreated infection resulting from Lyme disease may result in inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain , temporary paralysis of one side of the face and weakness, numbness, tingling, shooting pains or burning in different parts of the body or limbs.

Many patients are startled to discover their poor health is the result of having Lyme Disease.

Growing Need For Lyme Disease Experts And Research

The estimated incidence of Lyme disease in the United States has been steadily rising, to approximately 476,000 new cases annually. Despite antibiotic treatment, approximately 10-20% of these new infections will lead to distressing and potentially disabling symptoms, such as severe fatigue, joint and muscle pain, neurologic symptoms, and cognitive problems that may last for months or years.

There is limited expertise in treating the acute and chronic aspects of tick-borne diseases, making it difficult for patients to find high-quality, specialized care. In addition, little research has been done to determine which treatments are most effective for persistent symptoms, which can interfere with daily activities and work.

Like COVID-19 long-haulers, many people with tick-borne diseases were completely well until their infection precipitated a cascade of chronic, multi-system effects, says Brian Fallon, MD, director of the Cohen Center for Health and Recovery from Tick-Borne Diseases. A comprehensive evaluation takes time. In addition, the cost of care for patients with chronic symptoms can be prohibitive, requiring multiple visits to physicians who may not be aware of the latest research on tick-borne illnesses. Our center will be the first to address all of these issues by offering access to affordable care with experienced physicians while at the same time integrating research and physician training into our clinical model.

The Integrative Lyme Disease Program

The Integrative Lyme Program is a 12-month program. It is made up of a 2-week period at one of the Infusio treatment centers, a 4-month home program, followed by a 4 day follow up treatment at the center. After which you receive an optimized home care support for another 8 months. Each part of the treatment is designed to support the different stages of development experienced during the program.

The Integrative Lyme Support Program includes a specific number of diagnostics, therapies and treatments.

However, there may be modifications to the type of therapy, number of treatments and their duration. Each patient receives an individualized treatment program. This will depend upon your individual health assessment as indicated by our medical team. The 10-day regimen is intensive and lasts approximately six hours each day.

Additional treatments may be added to the therapy. These treatments are not part of the program and will be at an additional cost, quoted prior to the application of the treatment.

Why Standard Healthcare Blood Tests May Not Detect Lyme Disease

How To Treat Chronic Lyme Disease

Healthcare providers are sometimes compelled to treat presumptively because the standard blood tests may notdetect Lymedisease or the accompanying co-infections accurately. Presumptive treatment does not help in uprooting theChronic Lymecoinfections, which is why we see patients whose Lyme disease symptoms return a few weeks or months aftercompletingtreatment at standard healthcare facilities.

Standard healthcare providers utilize ELISA and Western Blot tests toconfirm thediagnosis, but both tests depend on your immune system response. If your immune system is weakened due to anyreason, such as heavy infectious load from Lyme coinfections, there are high chances of a false negative in thistwo-tieredtest.

The ELISA test detects antibodies, a type of protein, generated by your immune system in response to thebacterium B.burgdorferi, but if your immune system is weakened then it will not produce the antibody, leading to afalsenegativeresult.
Generally, if patients test negative in ELISA, they are not even recommended for the Western Blot, whichis aconfirmatory test to help in determining the presence or absence of certain proteins.

What Is Lyme Disease

According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, Lyme disease is caused by the bite of a tick carrying the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. This bacterium is a spirochete, or one that is twisted spirally. However, while a spirochete is a bacterium, research has shown that B. burgdorferi does not share factors common to many bacterial pathogens. This is why Dr. Dane believes antibiotic therapies are not a cure for chronic Lyme disease.

Patients Stories & Testimonials

For the past 10 years, I have had the privilege of working with over a thousand individuals with Lyme. Many of those individuals would describe themselves as cured from Lyme and left that part of their lives behind. Others would say that they are significantly better with some lingering issues. Yet there are some that I have been unable to help, to the degree we both wished. Below, are some testimonials of these that have had permanent and significant improvements.

Steve ONeill

Jennifer from Ontario, May 2017

When my daughter was six-years-old she became sick. First she had pain in her foot. This slowly increased to strange aches and pains, muscle cramping, and occasional minor limping. Her symptoms progressed to high anxiety, hallucinations , skin burning at the lightest touch, and other odd sensations as well. All of her symptoms were fleeting would come and go without warning.

If she had been bitten by a tick I never saw any sign of it. She saw many doctors and had many tests performed, but everything came out negative. I tried a naturopathic doctor but she did not help.

James from Newmarket, Ontario. 2011

I have been trying to figure out how to thank the person who quite literally saved my life.

Two years ago I truly believed that at best I had another 5 years to live. However, by the summer of 2009, at 45 years of age, I began to realize that I have as good a chance of having a normal life expectancy as anyone else. An amazing revelation.

Doug, April 2013

Thank You

Is There An Effective Treatment For Lyme Disease

Dr. Dane was introduced to a new treatment for Lyme disease in 2017. It was not an antibiotic, nor was it an herbal remedy. It was a mineral compound produced in liquid form that could be turned into a gaseous state and nebulized. The product essentially acts as a fumigator and blasts the body with a blend of minerals that kills the spirochetes and improves immune function. Skeptical at first, Dr. Dane tracked eight patients over the course of a year that she had treated for the neurological effects of Lyme disease. Much to her amazement, seven of those patients were clear of Lyme just over a year later. Symptom relief varied from completely gone to 50% better. However, some effects of CLD cannot be reversed.

The mineral product is called Lyme-N, and, like many aspects of Lyme disease, its effectiveness is controversial. But this is the only treatment Dr. Dane has seen eradicate the spirochetes associated with CLD.

Dr. Dane has witnessed many patients put their trust in her after becoming frustrated with more traditional Lyme disease treatments at other medical facilities. The Carolina Brain Centers way of treating patients is built upon the tenets of functional neurology, which use a combination of medical technology and brain therapy to produce healing where possible and the easing of symptoms in other cases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends oral or intravenous antibiotics as the standardtreatment for Lyme disease, but antibiotics alone may not be effective for many patients. In our peer-reviewed andpublished article, “ChronicLyme Disease: Persistent Clinical Symptoms Related to Immune Evasion,Antibiotic Resistance and Various DefenseMechanisms of Borrelia burgdorferi,” we explain how the bacteria Borrelia Burgdorferi, which causes Lymedisease, is unique in its ability to reduce itsexposure to antibiotics in chronic patients. Due to this elusive feature of the bacteria, treating it with antibioticsalone may not be comprehensive enough to counter Lyme disease.

Lyme & Tickborne Illness

Having Lyme disease is a unique journey. No two Lyme patients will present the same symptoms. Therefore, treatment must be tailored to fit the individual, level of sensitivity, and degree of illness. In healing chronic infection there is no magic bullet.

How do people get Tick borne illness?

Most people get Lyme from the bite of the nymph, or immature, form of the tick. Nymphs are about the size of a poppy seed. Because they are so tiny and their bite is painless, many people do not even realize they have been bitten. Other co-infections can come through biting flys, mosquitos, fleas and lice. If pregnant women are infected, they sometimes pass Lyme disease to their unborn children. Some doctors believe other types of human-to-human transmission are possible but little is known for certain. The lyme bacteria has been found in all body fluids.

Why Are Lyme Disease And Other Tick

A large number of cases of tick-borne illness are misdiagnosed, especially among children. A variety of bacterial organisms can cause Tick-borne diseases, so the progression of these diseases typically dont follow a specific pattern. Tick-borne illnesses are complicated to diagnose and treat because they can affect many different body systems, and their symptoms vary widely between infected individuals. The accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses requires an experienced and knowledgeable practitioner with a thorough understanding of the complexity of these disorders.

The Cohen Center for Health and Recovery, combining patient care and research for Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, was launched in August 2021 at Columbia Universitys Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Due to our long waitlist, we are not currently scheduling new patients. Please return to this webpage periodically for updates on when we will resume seeing new patients.

The Need

Tick-borne diseases are multi-system illnesses involving the skin, muscles, joints, the heart, peripheral nerves, and/or the brain. While early Lyme disease usually responds well to rapid treatment, later Lyme disease manifestations can be more challenging to treat. The CDC estimates that there are 476,000 newly diagnosed and treated cases annually. Each year, despite antibiotic treatment, approximately 10-20% of these new infections will lead to distressing and potentially disabling symptoms, such as severe fatigue, joint and muscle pain, neurologic symptoms, irritability, depression, sleep disturbance, and cognitive problems, that may last for months or years. Because these tick-borne infections can trigger disturbing physical and neuropsychiatric symptoms, clinicians without specialized training in tick-borne diseases may be uncertain how to help these patients. Our Center offers evaluation and treatment by clinicians with expertise in the evaluation and treatment of tick-borne diseases.
