What Are The Symptoms Of Lyme Disease

Ticks Found To Carry Virus Worse Than Lyme Disease

According to the CDC, untreated Lyme disease can produce a variety of symptoms, depending on the stage of the infection. Three to 30 days after being bitten by a tick, you may experience these early symptoms of Lyme disease:

  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Erythema migrans rash: Occurs in approximately 70 to 80 percent of infected persons. Begins at the site of a tick bite after a delay of three to 30 days . Expands gradually over a period of days. May feel warm to the touch, but is rarely itchy or painful. Sometimes clears as it enlarges, resulting in a target or bulls-eye appearance. May appear on any area of the body

Days to months after being bitten by a tick, you may experience these later Lyme disease symptoms:

  • Severe headaches and neck stiffness
  • Additional EM rashes on other areas of the body
  • Arthritis with severe joint pain and swelling, particularly the knees and other large joints.
  • Intermittent pain in tendons, muscles, joints and bones
  • Heart palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
  • Episodes of dizziness or shortness of breath
  • Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord

Its Unclear How Long Ticks Must Be Attached To You To Transmit Infections

Should you happen to quickly find a tick embedded in your skin, dont assume you have no chance of contracting Lyme disease or another tick-borne infection.

The CDC states that a tick must be attached to a host for 24-48 hours to transmit Lyme disease. But a 2015 review stated that the minimum attachment time for transmission of an infection has never been established.

That study also brought to light six documented cases of Lyme disease that had been transmitted in less than 6 hours. Plus, the other diseases that ticks carry such as babesiosis and bartonellosis may occur within minutes after a tick has latched onto your skin.

What does this mean for you? While the transmission risks may be lower the less time a tick is attached to you, the risk isnt completely eliminated if you find an embedded tick and remove it before 24 hours has passed.

Also, keep in mind, many people may not know how or when they acquired a tick bite, making it very difficult to calculate the length of time it was attached for.

Can Spiders Cause Lyme Disease

Ticks are tiny, but their bites can pack a gigantic wallop. These small, spider-like arachnids feed off the blood of humans and animals. Sometimes they pass along Borrelia burgdorferi, which is the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, says Nathan Hofmann, FNP.

How do you know if you have chronic Lyme disease?

Look for:

  • swollen lymph nodes.
  • Is Lyme disease curable?

Lyme disease is caused by infection with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Although most cases of Lyme disease can be cured with a 2- to 4-week course of oral antibiotics, patients can sometimes have symptoms of pain, fatigue, or difficulty thinking that last for more than 6 months after they finish treatment.

    What all causes Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and rarely, Borrelia mayonii. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans.

Where Are Ticks That Carry Lyme Disease Found

Ticks that carry Lyme disease can be found anywhere their hosts live, in short, anywhere in the world. They prefer moist shady areas. The phrase deer tick, the name commonly used for the species of ticks that carry Lyme disease, is somewhat of a misnomer. Although deer are important as reproductive hosts in the lifecycle of these ticks, other vertebrate animals actually infect the ticks with disease organisms not the deer. These animals include white-footed mice, chipmunks, shrews, several species of ground feeding birds , and many other small mammals. Lyme disease ticks can be found in:

    • Tall grass, bushy areas and beach grass
    • Areas planted with pachysandra or other ground covers
    • Lawn perimeters where they meet forest, woodlot or garden edges

Ticks That Dont Transmit Lyme Disease

While both the deer tick and western blacklegged tick can carry and transmit Lyme disease to humans, there are a large number of other tick species in the United States that dont carry or spread the disease. These include the following tick species:

    • Lone Star ticks
    • American dog tick
    • Rocky Mountain wood tick

Keep in mind that just because a tick doesnt carry Lyme disease, doesnt mean that a bite from that tick is entirely without risk. For example, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, brown dog tick, and American dog tick are all capable of carrying and spreading Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

    Lyme Disease Or Stari

How to avoid ticks and Lyme disease in Michigan

An erythema migrans-like rash has also been described in humans following bites of the lone star tick. This condition has been named Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness . Although the rash may be accompanied by systemic symptoms, disseminated or severe disease has not been reported. Because the cause of STARI is unknown, diagnostic blood tests are not available. It is not known whether antibiotic treatment is necessary or beneficial for patients with STARI. Nevertheless, because STARI resembles early Lyme disease, physicians often treat patients with the same antibiotics recommended for Lyme disease.

Lone star ticks can be found from central Texas and Oklahoma eastward across the southern states and along the Atlantic Coast as far north as Maine.

    About Ticks And Lyme Disease

Ticks are small crawling bugs in the spider family. They are arachnids, not insects. There are hundreds of different kinds of ticks in the world. Many of them carry bacteria, viruses or other pathogens that cause disease in humans and/or animals.

In the midwestern and eastern United States, Ixodes scapularis or deer tick is the primary vector of Lyme disease. On the West Coast, the spirochete is carried by Ixodes pacificus or western black-legged tick. In the South, lone star ticks can also transmit Lyme disease or a closely related illness.

Ticks have four life stages: egg, larva, nymph and adult. In each stage after hatching, they suck blood from animals like mice, squirrels, birds and deer. Then they drop off, enter a dormant period and molt to enter the next stage.

Ticks dont start out being infected with Lyme. They get it by feeding on an infected animal, often a mouse or other small rodent. Then, they pass it along to the next animal or person they bite.

    Bed Bugs And Diseases

First things first: up until very recently, bed bugs werent scientifically proven to carry any sort of transmittable disease. While popular belief might associate them with serious illnesses , the CDC had concluded that they couldnt actually carry any illness that can be passed along to humans.

Of course, this doesnt preclude the possibility of serious complications from bed bug bites. In some people, symptoms are very mild: a person might have a slight reaction to a bed bug bite that involves a minor amount of itching. In certain segments of the population, though, bites from bed bugs can cause a serious allergic reaction. If you believe youre experiencing a reaction to bed bug bites, its important to seek medical assistance immediately.

Theres A New Possible Suspect Behind The Most Commonly Reported Insect

Lyme disease, the most commonly reported insect-carried disease in the United States, is caused by a known bacteria found in ticks. But scientists have now found that another parasite may also be responsible for the nasty illness.

As The New York Times reports, researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, identified six patients who were infected by a newly identified bacteria they named Borrelia mayonii.

The patients had symptoms similar to those caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, which was previously the only culprit behind Lyme disease in the US.

The findings, which were reported in the medical journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases, could help explain why so many people who suffer symptoms of Lyme test negative for it.

Among the diseases on the list that are caused by indigenous pathogens are Lyme disease West Nile, dengue and Zika virus diseases plague and spotted fever rickettsioses, they wrote. Malaria and yellow fever are no longer transmitted in the United States but have the potential to be reintroduced.

Petersen would not say directly that climate change is worsening things but said hot weather is a major factor.

These diseases are very weather-dependent, he said.

The mosquito-borne diseases tend to get worse during heat waves. West Nile virus major outbreaks in the United States have all happened during heat waves. Higher temperatures make mosquitoes more infectious, Petersen added.

As temperatures rise, ticks that carry infections can spread further north and can remain infectious longer into fall and winter, Petersen said.

    Who Gets Lyme Disease

Lyme disease can affect people of any age. People who spend time outdoors in activities such as camping, hiking, golfing, or working or playing in grassy and wooded environments are at increased risk of exposure. The chances of being bitten by a deer tick are greater during times of the year when ticks are most active. Ticks can be active any time the temperature is above 45° F. Young deer ticks, called nymphs, are active from mid-May to mid-August and are about the size of poppy seeds. Adult ticks are most active from March to mid-May and from mid-August to November and are about the size of sesame seeds. Both nymphs and adults can spread Lyme disease. Infected deer ticks can be found throughout New York State.

A Tick Bite Doesnt Feel Like A Mosquito Bite

Many people think theyll be able to feel when a tick bites them, just like they feel a mosquito bite.

But ticks are sneaky little bloodsuckers, and theyve evolved with some sophisticated, almost science fiction-like mechanisms.

Their saliva contains natural anesthetic and immune suppressors to ensure that you dont feel anything at all when they jab you to feed, reports the Internal Lyme and Associated Diseases Society .

The less access the ticks have to your skin, the better. Wear light-colored clothing and tuck your long-sleeved shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks.

What Can A Workplace Or Home Do To Reduce The Presence Of Ticks

Keep the lawn and yard well maintained to prevent ticks from living near the home or workplace.

    • Keep the grass mowed. Trim trees and shrubs.
    • Remove leaf litter, brush, and weeds at the edge of the lawn, and around stonewalls and woodpiles.
    • Clean up and seal stonewalls and small openings around the home to help discourage rodents.
    • Keep stacked firewood piles and bird feeders away from buildings.
    • Keep any pets, particularly dogs, out of the woods and talk to your veterinarian about tick repellents for your pets.
    • Move children’s swing sets and sandboxes away from the woodland’s edge and use a woodchip or mulch foundation.
    • Consider using hard landscape items such as woodchips, mulch, stones, gravel, tile, or metals.
    • Create a border or barrier between the lawn, woods, or stonewalls to discourage deer and rodent activity.
    • Widen woodland trails.

They can also come from other infestation areas or secondhand furniture. They can hitch a ride with items such as luggage, purses, backpacks, or other items that are upholstered or soft. They can travel between rooms in apartment complexes and hotels because they share a common space.

There is a misconception that bed bugs are caused by filthy environments, but this is not the case. Bed bugs can live in any environment as long as they have access to the right food source. Having a good understanding of bed bugs will help you keep them out of your home or business. A bed bug can hitchhiking with you on a bike. They can take a ride at any time of day and in any location. There are some places where you should keep an eye out for them. How Big Are Ticks

In my mind, a tick is about the size of an apple seed. But, this is only true if it is an adult tick. Nymphs are about the size of poppy seeds and larvae are about the size of a grain of sand.

Most people with Lyme disease are bitten by the poppy-seed size of ticksthe nymphs. Adult ticks also carry the bacteria, but these apple-seed-sized ticks are much easier to see and remove .

    Control Ticks Around Your Home

Keep grasses cut short and a sunny area in your yard. Ticks dont like the sun and wait in shady areas on brush and grasses. Keep your backyard free of ticks by ensuring the grasses are set back from the woods around your home by eight feet. Place a three-foot wood chip, gravel or mulch border area between grassy edges and tick-prone zones. Invite birds that thrive on ticks into your yard by supplying bird food and water.

What Kind Of Tick Is Responsible For Lyme Disease

The bacterium was isolated alive from the blood of two patients, and was subsequently found in black-legged ticks in two parts of Wisconsin. Both species of Lyme-causing bacteria are carried by the tick Ixodes scapularis, also known as the black-legged or deer tick, which has continued to spread its range across the U.S.

Can you get Lyme disease from a tick bite?

Because nymphs are as small as poppy seeds and their bite is painless, people often dont realize they have been bitten. Adult ticks can also infect humans, but are easier to spot and remove. Not all ticks are infected. Because tick studies have only been done in a relatively few places, in most of the US, tick infection rates are unknown.

Can a black legged tick cause Lyme disease?

The black-legged tick can spread both species of bacteria known to cause Lyme disease. Until very recently it was thought that just one bacterium was to blame for causing Lyme disease in humans. But it turns out that a second, related bug can cause it too.

How Do I Know If Ive Been Bitten By A Tick

Detecting tick bites can be tricky. Unlike the bites of mosquitoes and other insects, tick bites do not tend to cause itching or immediate skin irritation.

Every blood-feeding arthropod and insect introduces saliva into the wound, explains Jonathan Day, PhD, an emeritus professor of medical entomology at the University of Florida. In the case of mosquitoes and some other biting insects, this saliva contains proteins that prevent the bite wound from clotting, which would slow the outflow of blood and therefore disrupt feeding, Dr. Day explains.

Apart from preventing your blood from clotting, these proteins also trigger a reaction from your immune system. This reaction produces redness, swelling, itching, and all the other unpleasant skin irritations that come with bug bites, Day explains.

But tick bites are different. Ticks suppress that reaction with immunosuppressants in their saliva, Ostfeld explains.

Since you cant feel a ticks bite, you can detect it in one of two ways:

How Do People Get Lyme Disease

There is solid scientific evidence showing Lyme is transmitted through tick bites. Yet fifty percent of the time someone has chronic Lyme they do not remember a tick bite. In spite of this public health authorities and the Infectious Disease Society of America hold on tight to a ridiculous view that it is only transmitted through tick bites.

Well, I think they have it wrong. In this article I review, based on science, the other ways Lyme may be transmitted. And it is more than the ticks.
