Connecticut Childrens Medical Center Hartford Ct

The Connecticut Childrens Medical Center provides both routine preventative care and emergency care caused by infection or broken teeth due to trauma. The highly-trained dentists and dental hygienists focus on long-term care for the teeth and gums of children from their first visit to 18 years-old.

Tips For Cavity Prevention

  • Limit frequency of meals and snacks.
  • Encourage brushing, flossing, and rinsing.
  • Watch what your child drinks.
  • Avoid giving your child sticky foods.
  • Make treats part of meals.
  • Choose nutritious snacks.

The first baby teeth that come into the mouth are the two bottom front teeth. You will notice this when your baby is about 6-8 months old. Next to follow will be the 4 upper front teeth and the remainder of your babys teeth will appear periodically. They will usually appear in pairs along the sides of the jaw until the child is about 2 1/2 years old.

At around 2 1/2 years old your child should have all 20 teeth. Between the ages of 5 and 6, the first permanent teeth will begin to erupt. Some of the permanent teeth replace baby teeth and some dont. Dont worry if some teeth are a few months early or late as all children are different.

Baby teeth are important as they not only hold space for permanent teeth but they are important to chewing, biting, speech and appearance. For this reason, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and daily hygiene.

Why Choose A Pediatric Dentist Vs A Family Dentist

Pediatric dentists are specialists in treating the unique needs of children. A pediatric dentist has completed an additional 2-3 years of specialty training beyond dental school and treats the oral health needs of infants and children, including those with special needs. Pediatric dentists are skilled at using smaller equipment designed for a childs mouth and better understand the intricacies and importance of baby teeth in a growing child. They also focus more attention on educating patients and parents about preventive care to help children avoid complications such as decay, infection, speech problems, and cosmetic issues.

See What Our Patients Are Saying

Amazing with both my kids! My youngest son is autistic, has sensory issues with teeth brushing and running out of the room. They always help by putting him in a room with a door so he cant run and are very patient with him to help him feel comfortable. Jessica is our favorite hygienist!!! She took her time, adjusted to his needs and comfort. She was beyond amazing. All of the doctors weve had are nice and friendly too.

Wow, just wow! The staff went so far above and beyond to make me feel safe and cared for! They answered all my questions, were incredibly kind and reassuring and even offered extra elements such as diapers and wipes and a changing table if I needed it for my little one. Staff even offered to help carry my things! I can tell staff are passionate about what they do and really care about their patients and treat them as family! Highly recommend!

My 2 children have been patients of Mt. Airy Childrens Dental Associates for years. We all love it here! My children are always excited to come to the Dentist, not many parents can say that. I highly recommend coming to this highly professional, clean, and fun atmosphere for your children.

What About Preventative Care

Tooth decay and children no longer have to go hand in hand. At our office we are most concerned with all aspects of preventive care. We use the latest in dental sealant technology to protect your childs teeth. Dental sealants are space-age plastics that are bonded to the chewing surfaces of decay-prone back teeth. This is just one of the ways we will set the foundation for your childs lifetime of good oral health.

Why Choose Our Office

For the same reasons that you take your child to see a pediatrician, children benefit from seeing a pediatric dentist who specializes in handling their specific needs. Our experienced staff is uniquely trained and committed to providing the highest quality care for your child. Dr. Edmonstone, a pediatric dentist completed an additional three years of intensive training after completing his dental school program, which combines clinical instruction along with a deepened knowledge of children and their needs. This specialized training allows for your childs smile to be cared for from their first tooth eruption through young adulthood.

Our office serves infants, children, teens and persons with special health care needs in Southeastern Connecticut Shoreline and surrounding areas. We offer emergency Dental services and can be reached on our main line at 388-0142. When calling, you will be redirected to reach the Dentist, if you are calling after hours. We accept all major dental insurances including Husky A, B, C and D, United Concordia, Cigna PPO and DHMO, Delta NJ PPO & Premier, Anthem BC/BS and most other major dental insurance.

We believe that oral health is vital to total body health and encourage parents to begin preventive dental visits by a childs first birthday. Please call our office at 388-0142 if you have any questions about scheduling, or insurance or would like to set-up an appointment for a visit!

Your Childs First Visit

The first regular dental visit should be just after your childs third birthday. The first dental visit is usually short and involves very little treatment. We may ask you to sit in the dental chair and hold your child during the examination. You may also be asked to wait in the reception area during part of the visit so that a relationship can be built between your child and your dentist.

We will gently examine your childs teeth and gums. X-rays may be taken . We may clean your childs teeth and apply topical fluoride to help protect the teeth against decay. We will make sure your child is receiving adequate fluoride at home. Most important of all, we will review with you how to clean and care for your childs teeth.
