History Of Lyme Disease

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Lyme Disease

Dr. Allen Steere first identified Lyme disease in the early 1970s. He connected the disease to a bite from the black-legged, or deer, tick. He named it Lyme disease after Old Lyme, Connecticut, where doctors diagnosed the first victims. It wasnât until 1982, however, that someone identified the actual cause. Swiss-born entomologist Willy Burgdorfer discovered the bacterium responsible for the disease and named it after himself.

Borrelia burgdorferi is the main cause of Lyme disease in the United States. However, in 2013, scientists at the Mayo clinic discovered a second bacterial species, Borrelia mayonii, responsible for Lyme disease in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. In Europe and Asia, two more species of bacteria can cause Lyme disease: Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii. All four species of bacteria spread through the black-legged tick.

How Does It Help With Lyme

Lyme and co-factors are anaerobic like most bacteria. Anaerobic means it does not like oxygen. Therefore, HBOT provides the optimal oxygen-rich environment to kill the Lyme bacteria. The great thing about HBOT is that it can be combined with other therapies, including antibiotics which makes them more effective. In addition to killing the Lyme bacteria, it also aids in reducing symptoms from Chronic Lyme. The high dose of oxygen treatment may reduce joint and muscle pain, and chronic inflammation.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Autoimmune Disease

We are closing out our Autoimmune series by exploring another highly effective but little-known treatment for autoimmune disease hyperbaric oxygen therapy !

HBOT has been used for decades in Europe with impressive results, yet its applied in a very limited capacity here in the US. Fortunately, as more patients seek out safer and more effective alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs, its slowly gaining traction.

This week well look at what it is, how it can help stop autoimmune disease progression and repair tissue damage, and what to expect during HBOT sessions!

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Lyme

Several Lyme warriors I have spoken to, including myself, have tried Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, also called HBOT for Lyme Disease. HBOT is a pressurized environment with high concentrations of oxygen. You probably have heard of hyperbaric chambers being used for when someone gets the Benz scuba diving. However, HBOT has been successful for some with Chronic Lyme. You can read more about Brynn Alexanders success story here or Sam Perrys story.

The Benefits Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy In Treating Lyme Disease

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber For Lyme Disease Use

While there has not been a tremendous amount of research done on hyperbaric oxygen therapy as it relates to lyme disease, it is actually in the top three conditions we see in patients.

The results that we see in the office are very significant for these patients. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a unique but effective treatment for lyme disease. This is because the bacteria that causes Lyme disease is anaerobic, meaning it cannot survive in oxygen-rich environments.

This bacteria can sometimes be resistant to certain antibiotic treatments, but will not endure oxygen-rich environments. With hyperbaric oxygen therapy providing high doses of oxygen in pressurized environments, the additional oxygenation effectively neutralizes bacteria that causes diseases such as Lyme disease.

Traditional treatment is usually a dose of antibiotics, but some physicians have started to add hyperbaric oxygen therapy as part of treatment to effectively cure Lyme disease in patients.

Another benefit of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for Lyme disease is that it can manage symptoms that may still be present even when the infection is gone. In cases like these, hyperbaric oxygen therapy usually relieves these symptoms when nothing else does.

Symptoms like inflammation, nerve damage, and muscle pain tend to return to normal when treated with HBOT.

Difference Between Chronic Lyme Disease And Post

Lyme disease is not only challenging to diagnose, but despite diagnosis, effective treatment may be difficult ifhealthcare providers do not tackle the infectious load often accompanying the disease. We have published extensivelyabout “Chronic Lyme DiseaseComplex and Its Commonly Undiagnosed Primary and Secondary Co-infections,” to help patients receive a properdiagnosis and comprehensive treatment.

However, Chronic Lyme Disease Complex is different from Post-Lyme DiseaseSyndrome , also called Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome . The CDC defines PTLDS as symptoms ofpain, fatigue, ordifficulty thinking that lasts for more than 6 months after treatment completion. In our clinical opinion, thesedebilitating symptoms are experienced by patients whose Chronic Lyme Disease coinfections are left untreated, due tothelack of proper diagnosis and treatment.

Hbots Impact On Lyme Disease

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment involves the inhalation of 100% pure oxygen while sitting in a hyperbaric suite which is pressurized with air to above atmospheric levels. During these sessions, oxygen levels in the bodys tissues rise to 10-15 times over that of normal conditions. In the 1990s, researchers at Texas A& M University found that HBOT treatments proved effective in treating Lyme Disease, because the higher pressurized atmosphere produced oxygen levels that killed off the bacterium that cause the disease. Chinese researchers also reported that they eliminated Lyme disease symptoms in a patient from Taiwan using HBOT treatments after treatments using antibiotics had failed.

Treatments at Aviv Clinic increases inter vascular oxygen concentration to 1,500 times more than normal diffusion into the regular tissues, including the protective biofilm, eradicating the spirochaetes. The results with current patients indicate the spirochete that causes Lyme disease cannot live in an oxygen-rich environment.

HBOT treats many of the neurological conditions associated with Lyme Disease, leading to less fatigue, better energy, more sleep and less joint pain. HBOT also supports maintaining healthy cognitive function as we age and our bodies become less efficient at processing oxygen. HBOT enhances both brain and body performance by boosting patients access to oxygen.

Causes And Symptoms Of Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which generally gets transmitted through a tickbite. It isone of the most prevalent tick-transmitted infections in the United States.

When a deer tick, carrying the bacterial infection, bites a human, it can transmit this infectious disease, along with avariety of other disease-causing pathogens, such as viruses and other microorganisms. In certain instances, patients maynotice a red Bulls eye rash called Erythema Migrans, a few days after the infected tick bites them. Apartfrom thisrash, some of the early symptoms of Lyme disease may include:

Headache
Exhaustion
Musculoskeletal Pain

In such cases of early Lyme disease, the IDSA guidelines recommend an oral course of antibiotics for 10 to 14 days, and 14 to 21 days antibiotic treatment for chronicsymptoms of neurologic Lyme.

While standard oral antibiotic treatment may be enough for early-stage Lyme disease, in our clinical experience, antibiotics alone cannot effectively treat the chronic neurological and psychological symptoms, which often manifestinthe later stage of the disease.

Hbot For Lyme Disease Can It Improve Symptoms

HBOT for Lyme Disease Treatment Hyperbaric Chambers

Before getting started, its important to note that HBOT is not an FDA-approved therapy for the treatment of Lyme disease. This is due to a lack of studies and evidence for or against its utility.

That being said, a number of promising clinical studies and case reports have shown that HBOT is effective in treating Lyme disease throughout the USA.

In a clinical trial conducted at Texas A& M University, 91 Lyme disease patients were given HBOT treatment . The HBOT protocol included a 60-minute session for up to 3 months.

After the 3-month period, each patient was evaluated using a Lyme disease questionnaire developed by Lyme disease specialists. Surprisingly, 84% of the patients displayed either significant improvement in symptoms due to Lyme disease, or a complete elimination of their symptoms, indicating HBOT was markedly efficacious. The authors attributed the reduction in symptoms to the higher pressurized atmosphere of the HBOT chambers, which produces oxygen levels that kill off the bacterium responsible for the disease3.

Essentially, the study suggests HBOT removes bacteria and toxins from the body as the elevated oxygen in the blood delivered via HBOT kills bacteria/viruses. The increased blood oxygen may also aid in the removal of heavy metals and toxins which are often present in Lyme disease as well.

The patient was characterized/diagnosed with CLD prior to HBOT treatment.

However, some other ways HBOT works to treat Lyme disease were discussed as well, such as:

How Can Hbot Help Treat Lyme Disease

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, or HBOT, offers a unique treatment to Lyme disease that traditional therapies do not offer. As with most bacteria, the ones that cause Lyme disease are anaerobic. This means they are unable to survive in oxygen-rich environments. So, while the bacteria may develop resistance to traditional antibiotics, they cannot thrive in high levels of oxygen. Therefore, it only makes sense that HBOT and oxygen help.

HBOT treatments deliver high concentrations of oxygen under pressurized environments. The oxygen enters the body and effectively kills the disease-causing bacteria. While traditional therapy begins with antibiotics, many physicians are adding HBOT treatments at the same time, allowing the two treatments to work together to effectively cure the patient.

But hyperbaric oxygen doesnât just kill off the bacteria associated with Lyme disease. The high concentrations of oxygen help to treat symptoms and conditions that, for many, remain constant after test results show no more infection. In cases of PTLDS, HBOT often provides relief when nothing else does. Conditions such as joint and muscle pain, chronic inflammation, cognitive complications, and nerve damage often return to normal during the treatment.

Borrelia Bacterium And The Black

The spread of Lyme disease occurs when the Borrelia burgdorferi transfers from a tick bite to a human. In the northeastern, mid-Atlantic and north-central United States, this comes from the black-legged, or deer, tick . On the Pacific Coast, it is spread by the western black-legged tick . Most cases of infection are transmitted through the bites of immature ticks, or those in the nymph stage. These ticks are typically tiny, measuring less than 2mm, and are very difficult to see.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy HBOT and Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy are highly effective treatments that have been used more and more frequently over the past decade to treat Lyme and other biotoxin illnesses. It helps maximize recovery and relief for Lyme disease and many other conditions. A groundbreaking study by William Fife, M.D. of Texas A& M University demonstrates dramatic improvements in the overall condition of Lyme patients treated with HBOT. It has been shown to reduce pain significantly, modulate the immune system, increase energy, alleviate sleep dysfunction and decrease cognitive dysfunction . In many cases patients are able to decrease use of antibiotics.

Okay, but What Exactly Is It?

is an oxygen therapy. Sessions can vary in length, and happen inside an oxygen-rich, pressurized chamber. Infusing the body with 95% medical grade oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure promotes healing and delivers benefits that breathing supplemental oxygen alone cant achieve. mHBOT dramatically increases the oxygen in blood plasma, and in the brain, spine, and joint fluid. It has also been shown to significantly increase the ability of cells to produce energy. Sessions can vary in length and it is safe to use electronics in the chamber.

Treating Lyme Disease In Humans

Lyme disease is a type of bacteria that infects people, making them very sick. Treating Lyme disease in humans is tricky because the symptoms come and go since toxins are left behind. To complicate matters, in 2013, scientists from the Mayo Clinic discovered another type of bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Antibiotics changed to kill multiple types of bacteria.

Johns Hopkins did a study that found even with antibiotic treatments, not all symptoms subside. While some antibiotics work at killing off bacteria, there are toxins and metals left behind in the body. Treatment is difficult because conditions can develop that are not treated with antibiotics.

For this reason, doctors have started treating patients with more than just antibiotics. It is becoming more common to recommend that patients use hyperbaric chamber therapy with medications to attack the bacteria and symptoms from multiple angles. This is especially important if the person has a type of bacteria that becomes resistance to traditional antibiotic therapy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: More Lyme Quackery

Hyperbaric Oxygen is another unnecessary therapy marketed for Lyme disease.

The FDA and Inside Edition have warned the public about cure-all claims made about HBOT. According to the FDA:

HBOT has not, however, been proven to be the kind of universal treatment it has been touted to be on some Internet sites. FDA is concerned that some claims made by treatment centers using HBOT may give consumers a wrong impression that could ultimately endanger their health.

Another statement by the FDA specifically cautions regarding unproven Lyme disease treatment:

If you are considering the use of a HBOT device for yourself or a loved one, be aware that some claims of what it can do are unproven. For example, HBOT devices are not proven to cure cancer, Lyme disease, autism or Alzheimers disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends you check with your health care provider before using a HBOT device to make sure you are pursuing the most appropriate care.

A 2015 review of 30 unproven or disproven therapies advertised for Lyme disease noted No study of in humans with Lyme disease has ever been published. Why use hyperbaric oxygen when Lyme disease is a treatable infection?

HBOT is not cleared as safe and effective for Lyme disease by the FDA, and HBOT is not approved for Lyme disease by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society .

Risks Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

16. Lyme Disease, Basic Training and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

When HBOT chambers are used for indications cleared by the FDA, HBOT is generally safe, and serious complications are rare.

Because of the increased pressure and increased concentration of the oxygen during HBOT, potential risks include:

  • Ear and sinus pain
  • Middle ear injuries, including tympanic membrane rupture
  • Temporary vision changes

High concentrations of oxygen also pose the risk of fire, which is one reason why the FDA recommends treatment at an accredited facility. Explosions and fires have occurred in HBOT chambers that have not been reviewed by the FDA and are located at unaccredited facilities.

Hbot : Harnessing The Healing Power Of Pure Oxygen

For more than three decades, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy , has been commonly used to treat a broad range of conditions such as chronic wounds, infections and bone disease. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported each year- however, their models show numbers as high as 476,000.

Although early treatment with antibiotics is usually enough to cure infection, a delay in treatment or antibiotic resistance can lead to complications. HBOT presents an unparalleled approach to Lyme disease that traditional therapies do not offer.

Clinical research showing the effectiveness of using HBOT to treat Lyme disease was first published in a 1998 Texas A& M University study. Since then, there have been numerous studies across the globe showing HBOT efficacy in treating Lyme disease.

Hyperbaric Treatment For Lyme Disease

Hyperbaric Treatment for Lyme DiseaseLyme disease causes a variety of symptoms including fatigue, fever, muscle and joint pain which can progress to chronic, severe arthritis. The heart and nervous system can also be severely damaged.

This disease became more common in North America in the early 1990s, when more Americans started to build their houses in rural wooded areas which exposed them to the ticks that are involved in the transmission of Borrellia. Currently, tens of thousands of people are diagnosed, although the Centers for Disease Control reports that this condition is often underdiagnosed, and the real number may be up to 10 times higher.
