The Problem With Cld Symptoms

Its that theyre common: Musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, headache, poor sleep, or low moodall things that are ascribed to CLDthese are symptoms that CDC studies show a fair amount of the adult population complains about, says Paul Auwaerter, MD, clinical director in the division of infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins Medicine and an expert on tick-borne diseases.

Kovacs spent years bouncing from specialist to specialist to try to tackle each problem as it camethe cardiologist after spells of dizziness and fainting, the GI doc for digestive problems. Because of that, it was so easy to fall through the cracks, she says. Her symptoms spanned everything from low blood pressure to joint pain to dizziness and confusion to clumsiness and migraines.

The Ashland, KY resident, who now runs the blog Lady of Lyme, wouldnt be told she has chronic Lyme disease until September 2011, more than five years after falling ill. She never found a tick bite, but says she had spent time in the woods and never checked her body after.

This is where things get complicated: If you didnt find an attached tick on your body, didnt see a rash, or didnt test positive for the bacteria, how can doctors be sure that youre feeling run down, foggy, and achy because of Lyme? What if you live in a state where Lyme isnt rampant?

In General Tick Borne Disease Or Lyme Disease Should Be Treated With Antibiotics Usually These Antibiotics Should Be Pharmaceuticals Although Augmentation With Botanical Antibiotics Can Be Even More Effective Than Pharmaceutical Therapies Alone

A novel drug to prevent Lyme disease is now being tested in humans ...

Unfortunately in late Lyme, antibiotics alone are often not sufficient. Some patients are genetically or epigenetically predisposed to chronic Lyme disease. Often the underlying conditions must be addressed along with the infection.

Borrelia burgdorferi has been called the second great pretender, after syphilis. Like syphilis it is a spirochete , and the spirochete goes to the brain and spinal cord as fast as it can get there. In addition like syphilis it grows very slowly. Unlike syphilis it is relatively smart in the bacterial world, having the largest genome of any other bacteria. Borrelia burgdorferi is able to crawl inside of cells, thus avoiding immune detection, hide in the brain and spinal cord, where our immune system is careful not to cause too much inflammation. More recent data suggests it may, like many of its co infecting microbes be able to fool the immune system and manipulate the immune response so that the immune system thinks that there is not an infection. In 3 animal models dog, mouse and monkey, chronic persistent infectious borrelia infection has been proven after short course antibiotic. This provides evidence that the cure of chronic Lyme disease in many patients will take more than 1-3 months of antibiotics.

What Are The Symptoms Of Lyme Disease

Rash

Some people infected with the bacteria get a rash that develops three to 30 days after the tick bite. The rash gradually expands out from the site of the bite. As the rash gets larger, it may take on the telltale bullseye pattern, but not always, and many people never get a rash.

Flu-like symptoms

Half of all patients report flu-like symptoms within the first week after the tick bite, including fever, chills, headache, fatigue, and aching muscles and joints, and these symptoms may persist for years.

Systemic

When the disease goes untreated, the bacteria infects other parts of your body causing:

  • Severe headaches
  • Extreme fatigue despite enough rest
  • Arthritis with severe joint pain
  • Pain in muscles, joints, bones
  • Loss of muscle tone on the face, or Bells Palsy
  • Heart palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Problems with memory and cognition
  • Bladder and gut symptoms

Understanding The Road Forward

A common refrain: Chronic Lyme disease is an easy answer to a seemingly-impossible-to-solve problem. The dialogue over CLD provokes strong feelings, and has been more acrimonious than any other aspect of Lyme disease, Paul M. Lantos, MD, of Duke University, writes in a 2016 paper in the Infectious Disease Clinics of North America. What is clear is that patients are in very real pain, no matter if the cause is Lyme or not, he says. That is something both sides agree on.

But patients are caught in the middle, the medical community is failing them, and theyre suffering for it. Its difficult to be your own advocate when you lack the energy to champion your health. The problem is that patients arent getting taken care of, says Dr. Green.

We wouldnt do this in any other disease. Wed investigate whats going on.

She herself doesnt use the term chronic Lyme, rather she calls it late Lyme, which refers to Lyme disease that was missed or treated ineffectively. causing a lot of illness and morbidity, loss of productive hours, and quality of life, she says.

We wouldnt do this in any other disease, says Dr. Green. Wed change our treatment course or investigate whats going onnot say oh its all in your head.

Finding The Right Treatment

Bay Area doctor returns from Ukraine, calls experience ‘life-altering’

The challenge now is to move beyond antibiotics into more symptom-based approaches, like those that treat depression or anxiety or that target neurological pain. But often patients hesitate. Theyve experienced such traumatic invalidation by the medical community that theyre reluctant to try symptom-based medicine because they feel like if they do, its giving into what doctors have told them all along, that its not Lyme. It becomes an obstacle to getting optimal care, says Dr. Fallon.

Many also turn to alternative therapies that are not supported by scientific evidence, including oxygen, energy, or heavy metal therapy, off-label use of medications, or even stem cell transplantation. A 2015 paper in Clinical Infectious Diseases came down hard on these treatments, calling them unproven and possibly dangerous.

Phillip Baker, PhD, the executive director of the American Lyme Disease Foundation was one author on the report. Hes very forward with his rejection of CLD and many of the doctors that diagnose it. Without it being a recognized disease, its difficult to get insurance coverage, so patients are stuck paying out of pocket for treatment.

Proven Or Alleged Unethical Activities Of Some Llmds

Some LLMDs, advocacy organisations for patients, and certain diagnostic laboratories have interconnections, presenting potential conflicts of interest for these LLMDs in their multiple roles as advisors, personal physicians, and recipients of grants from activist organisations. Many of these physicians are represented by the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society , located in Maryland, USA. Two of the most vocal patient-activist organisations are the Lyme Disease Association in New Jersey, and the California Lyme Disease Association , USA.

News: San Ramon Conference To Shed Light On Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease Risk Grows

The Contra Costa Times talks to Dr. Dave Martz, who will keynote this weekends Lyme disease conference in the San Francisco Bay area. After being told he had terminal ALS, Martz pursued Lyme disease treatmentwhich turned his health around.

SAN RAMON Dr. David Martz thought he was going to die.

In fall 2003, the energetic 62-year-old suddenly found himself becoming exhausted after only about 30 minutes of activity. Arthritis had set in. His muscles weakened.

The doctors were perplexed, said Martz, a physician living in Colorado Springs, Colo. It didnt make any sense.

His condition worsened. After a battery of tests, Martz was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig disease, a nerve cell-degeneration disease that causes loss of muscle movement and eventually death.

After starting an antibiotic regimen, the symptoms slowed and within months, his condition improved. After a year of the antibiotics, the ALS symptoms had gone away, he said. Though hes not 100 percent, his symptoms are far from as severe as they were seven years ago.
