The Integrative Medicine Physician Approach To Lyme Disease

lyme disease and hyperbarics

Integrative medicine doctors combine the best of conventional and alternative medicine treatments to address the person as a whole – tackling the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a disease and a patient’s lifestyle overall. By doing this, the doctor facilitates the body’s innate healing response to help you regain control of your health.

Individualized treatment is necessary for patients suffering from Lyme disease as no one treatment option broadly helps all patients. Genetics, medical history and environmental surroundings all affect how Lyme disease manifests in the body. Creating a treatment plan based on these factors, the results of a physical examination and by determining the underlying causes of symptoms, rears the best results.

Lyme Disease Diagnosis And Treatment

We see cases of Lyme disease in San Diego everyday. Lyme disease is among the most frequently diagnosed zoonotic tick-borne diseases worldwide. The bacteria that causes lyme disease belongs to the genus Borrelia. There are at least 37 known species, of which 13 are Lyme related including the more recently discovered Borrelia mayonii. Borrelia burgdorferi is the predominant causative agent of Lyme disease in the United States.

Transmission is mainly mediated through the bite of Ixodes ticks. The blacklegged tick spreads the disease in the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States. The western blacklegged dear tick spreads the disease on the Pacific Coast. The sheep tick spreads the disease throughout most of Europe. The taiga tick spreads disease in throughout most of Asia.

In North America, highly endemic areas are the northeastern and north-central United States, though cases have been reported in all states, but Hawaii. Transmission has not been documented in the tropics.

In contrast to common belief, Lyme disease is very common in California. This is a lyme disease map of deer ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi in different California counties.

What Is Cirs Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome

We are all exposed daily to bacteria, viruses and toxins in our environment. Our bodies have amazingly effective immune systems which activate when exposed to bacteria, viruses and biological toxins We are all familiar with immunizations which help our bodies fight some particularly nasty illnesses. When our immune systems activate, we create antibodies to rid ourselves of the foreign invaders.

Everyone gets one immune response gene from each parent. There are 54 immune response genes in humans. Six of those 54 gene types do not have a pattern to make antibodies to biotoxins. Consequently, some human immune systems are unable to make antibodies to certain biotoxins found in the environment. This means the immune system is activated and goes to battle against the invader, but can never win the battle, because there is no antibody pattern to rid the body of the biotoxins. It is like getting the flu but never getting rid of the virus that is causing it, so you never get better.

Tierrasanta Resident Shares Her Battle With Lyme Disease Ahead Of Local Walk

Tierrasanta resident Margaux Gunning was only 23 years old when she found herself bedridden.

I went from working 12 hours a day to just being completely bedbound, she said.

It took 15 doctors, more than eight misdiagnoses and two years before Gunning got a diagnosis of long-haul Lyme disease, an infectious disease transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.

However, she considers herself fairly lucky. The current gold-standard diagnostic for Lyme disease misses up to 60 percent of early-stage cases, according to the Bay Area Lyme Foundation.

Now 29, Gunning says shes aiming to help others by raising awareness for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

This Saturday, Gunning will be joining the Bay Area Lyme Foundation and San Diego Lyme Alliance for the revival of their annual Walk for Lyme San Diego, a 5k walk/rally to spread Lyme and tick-borne disease awareness, where all donations will go to Lyme disease research.

The walk is also a celebration for the Lyme Disease Biobank in Kearny Mesa, which opened just as the pandemic began in March 2020.

The biobank provides researchers with the vital blood, urine and tissue samples from people with Lyme in different regions needed to improve diagnostics and treatments in hopes that one day Lyme disease will be easy to diagnose and simple to cure, according to the foundation.

Im proof that more research is needed, Gunning said.

This is true for Gunning, who says its dramatically impacted her life.
