A Comprehensive Approach To Lyme Disease Treatment

Lyme & Reason: Dr. Steven Phillips and Dana Parish full interviews

Lyme Disease is the perfect example of a condition that requires not only antimicrobial therapy, but also comprehensive physiologic balance . As one of the few practices nationwide that focuses on integrative pediatric Lyme disease, we provide our patients with an alternative to the conventional one-size-fits-all treatment approach. We go beyond just treating the symptoms to determine the real cause of illness and provide our patients with a clear explanation of their medical problems. When evaluating a patient for possible tick-borne illness, we consider symptoms, physical findings, and laboratory results. Our tick-borne illness experts design and implement an individualized comprehensive pediatric Lyme disease treatment protocol for each patient. This inclusive diagnostic approach is in line with the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society . Our comprehensive model of individualized care is designed to maximize the chances for a positive clinical response that can restore your childs health.

In General Tick Borne Disease Or Lyme Disease Should Be Treated With Antibiotics Usually These Antibiotics Should Be Pharmaceuticals Although Augmentation With Botanical Antibiotics Can Be Even More Effective Than Pharmaceutical Therapies Alone

Unfortunately in late Lyme, antibiotics alone are often not sufficient. Some patients are genetically or epigenetically predisposed to chronic Lyme disease. Often the underlying conditions must be addressed along with the infection.

Borrelia burgdorferi has been called the second great pretender, after syphilis. Like syphilis it is a spirochete , and the spirochete goes to the brain and spinal cord as fast as it can get there. In addition like syphilis it grows very slowly. Unlike syphilis it is relatively smart in the bacterial world, having the largest genome of any other bacteria. Borrelia burgdorferi is able to crawl inside of cells, thus avoiding immune detection, hide in the brain and spinal cord, where our immune system is careful not to cause too much inflammation. More recent data suggests it may, like many of its co infecting microbes be able to fool the immune system and manipulate the immune response so that the immune system thinks that there is not an infection. In 3 animal models dog, mouse and monkey, chronic persistent infectious borrelia infection has been proven after short course antibiotic. This provides evidence that the cure of chronic Lyme disease in many patients will take more than 1-3 months of antibiotics.

Why Are Lyme Disease And Other Tick

A large number of cases of tick-borne illness are misdiagnosed, especially among children. A variety of bacterial organisms can cause Tick-borne diseases, so the progression of these diseases typically dont follow a specific pattern. Tick-borne illnesses are complicated to diagnose and treat because they can affect many different body systems, and their symptoms vary widely between infected individuals. The accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses requires an experienced and knowledgeable practitioner with a thorough understanding of the complexity of these disorders.

Are Antibiotics Always Effective For Lyme Disease

While antibiotics are certainly beneficial in combatting Lyme disease in its earliest stages, they are usually not well-suited to patients plagued with chronic Lyme and debilitating symptoms.

In fact, antibiotics that target Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium early on may not be equipped to address complications of chronic Lyme disease including co-infections and the formation of biofilm.

Whats more, when inappropriately-used, antibiotics can actually weaken the immune system and lead to resistance.

Strategies For Finding A Good Lyme Doctor

The first thing I did after my Lyme diagnosis was spend as much time and mental energy as I could researching Lyme disease. I needed to understand a little more what treatment options were available and how they compared.

I had a general idea that I wanted to find a good integrative LLMD to help guide me through the treatment process. I wanted a doctor who would take the best that modern medicine has to offer while also understanding what other alternative treatment modalities could bring to the table.

  • Determine what kind of treatment you want to pursue. Are you looking for a doctor who leans primarily on antibiotics and prescription medications? One who primarily uses alternative treatments? Or a doctor who uses both?
  • Collect names of potential doctors using reputable websites. There are several websites that will give you referrals for LLMDs. Some of my favorites are the following:
  • Lyme Disease Associate Doctor Referral
  • State-Specific Lyme Facebook Groups
  • Check the doctors out. Dont just go with the first Lyme doctor you find. Since most good LLMDs dont accept insurance, youll want to make sure youre not wasting your money or time on a dud.
  • Look for doctor reviews online or in online forums.
  • Join Lyme groups on Facebook and ask about the doctors youre considering.
  • Find local Lyme support groups to attend where youll be able to ask about the doctors people are seeing and learn what their track record is.
  • Good luck on your doctor search!

Getting Ready For Your Lyme Doctor Appointment

The time before your first meeting is a great time to create a file that you can give to the doctor. The file should include anything that will help your Lyme doctor understand your symptoms. Medical records, doctor notes, journals, or personal documentation regarding your Lyme disease symptoms are helpful. So is a list of medications previously and currently taking, as well as alternative or holistic treatments youve pursued. Because it is extremely difficult to try and remember everything you want to tell a doctor when you meet, writing everything down ensures you dont forget anything.

Finally, get excited. Working with a Lyme disease doctor can lead to healing once and for all. Start looking forward to a fun, active lifestyle. If the right doctor practices out of the country, you can start looking forward to a mini-vacation, too, one you completely deserve.

What Are The Symptoms Of Lyme Disease

Guarding Against Lyme Disease This Summer Cases on the Rise

You may not feel it when a tick bites you, but whether you spot it and remove it or it drops off naturally, it can leave a lump similar to a mosquito bite that disappears after a few days. Seeing the mark shows youve had a tick bite, but doesnt confirm you have Lyme disease.

If your tick bite is infected, it typically takes from three days to a month for the bulls-eye rash often seen in people who have Lyme disease to appear. This rash, called erythema migrans, isnt normally itchy or painful but may feel warm and can expand outwards by up to a foot.

    You may also experience:

    • Swollen lymph nodes

If Lyme disease is left untreated, it can cause further symptoms. The bulls-eye rash can appear on other parts of the body, and you may have severe attacks of joint pain and swelling. You may also experience neurological symptoms such as:

    • Numbness or weakness in your arms and legs
    • Impaired muscle movement

These symptoms sometimes appear years after the original infection. Less frequently seen symptoms include irregular heartbeat, inflammation in the eyes, severe fatigue, and hepatitis.

    How Is Lyme Disease Treated

Treatment for Lyme disease involves the use of antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing the infection. The sooner you start treatment at SivIMed Internal Medicine and Primary Care, the better your prognosis. Dr. Sivakumar prescribes a two to three-week course of oral antibiotics which should kill the infection, but if your nervous system becomes infected, you may need intravenous antibiotics too.

If you need advice on Lyme disease or have any symptoms of the condition, call SivIMed Internal Medicine and Primary Care today, or book an appointment online.

What Are The Fundamentals You Should Know About Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be found worldwide, which develops as the result of a borrelia burgdorferi infection. Early stages of the disease often have symptoms of a rash , and flu-like symptoms such as joint pain and fevers. Later stages may have symptoms of fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and cognitive difficulties among other symptoms. Lyme disease is acquired by a tick bite, usually by an infected blacklegged tick, and symptoms may take up to 6 weeks to develop. The infected ticks frequently carry co-infections such as Babesia, Bartonella, Erhlichia, and other pathogens.

Left untreated, patients can experience long-term extreme fatigue, joint and muscle pain, nerve pain, mental fog, psychiatric problems such as depression and anxiety, and many other symptoms. These symptoms can be misdiagnosed as other conditions including, but not limited to, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and psychiatric disorders.

If Lyme disease is already affecting your nervous system or joints, Dr. Forouzesh will determine if intravenous antibiotics are needed to treat the infection.

If possible exposure to Lyme disease is suspected, Dr. Forouzesh can evaluate you and provide information and advice on what treatment will be needed, as well as how to avoid future exposure to Lyme disease and tick bites.

    What Is Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection typically transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. It is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the country, and the steadily increasing number of cases has led many in the medical/scientific community and legislative arena to deem the disease a public health crisis and epidemic.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection typically transmitted through the bite of an infected tick

If diagnosed in its early stage, Lyme disease can be easily treated with antibiotics. But, delayed diagnoses can make treatment and recovery more difficult.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that at least 300,000 people in the United States are infected with Lyme disease each year. That figure is ten times higher than what had been previously reported by the CDC. Experts in the field believe the actual number is even higher.

We know that routine surveillance only gives us part of the picture, and that the true number of illnesses is much greater. Paul Mead, M.D., M.P.H, chief of epidemiology and surveillance for CDCs Lyme disease program.

In epidemiology, every time you have a surveillance system, you always have at least a tenfold underreporting. There have been studies that show it might be as much as 40 times that number. Daniel Cameron, M.D., M.P.H.

    The Need

Tick-borne diseases are multi-system illnesses involving the skin, muscles, joints, the heart, peripheral nerves, and/or the brain. While early Lyme disease usually responds well to rapid treatment, later Lyme disease manifestations can be more challenging to treat. The CDC estimates that there are 476,000 newly diagnosed and treated cases annually. Each year, despite antibiotic treatment, approximately 10-20% of these new infections will lead to distressing and potentially disabling symptoms, such as severe fatigue, joint and muscle pain, neurologic symptoms, irritability, depression, sleep disturbance, and cognitive problems, that may last for months or years. Because these tick-borne infections can trigger disturbing physical and neuropsychiatric symptoms, clinicians without specialized training in tick-borne diseases may be uncertain how to help these patients. Our Center offers evaluation and treatment by clinicians with expertise in the evaluation and treatment of tick-borne diseases.
