Infection Inflammation And Autoimmunity

DR. KENNETH BOCK, M.D. – 2017 Lyme Conference

The processes of infection and inflammation are interrelated with autoimmunity, making it difficult at times to tease apart the root cause of symptoms. Dr. Bock illustrates some of the root causes such as allergies and sensitivities, and explains various immune responses within the body. He also describes how gut health, stress, infection and inflammation are all interrelated.

The reality is Lyme disease can affect so many different organ systemsthats why it really requires this whole person, whole body approach.

Dr. Kenneth Bock

In relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not only the infection that causes a massive inflammatory response, but also the stress of the pandemic itself that adds to the inflammatory response. Along with the myriad of suggestions in his book, Dr. Bock also recommends love and laughter to help heal inflammation.

Dr. Bock refers listeners to the Brain Inflamed book to access a tool called the Mood Dysregulation Template. These templates were created to explore contributing medical conditions related to symptoms. There are templates related to the contributing factors of brain inflammation, including Lyme disease and co-infections. Thank you Dr. Bock for sharing your insights and expertise regarding Lyme disease, brain inflammation and the importance of an integrative approach to these complex issues!

Why Are Lyme Disease And Other Tick

A large number of cases of tick-borne illness are misdiagnosed, especially among children. A variety of bacterial organisms can cause Tick-borne diseases, so the progression of these diseases typically dont follow a specific pattern. Tick-borne illnesses are complicated to diagnose and treat because they can affect many different body systems, and their symptoms vary widely between infected individuals. The accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses requires an experienced and knowledgeable practitioner with a thorough understanding of the complexity of these disorders.

What Is Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is an infection passed to humans through the bite of an infected tick, which typically picks up an infectious bacterium by biting diseased deer or mice. Because multiple infectious agents can be involved, Lyme disease is more appropriately referred to as tick-borne diseases. Chronic Lyme disease symptoms can begin anytime from three days to several months after the initial tick bite. Lyme disease is a controversial subject in the medical community, sparking debate about diagnosis, appropriate treatment and even the prevalence of tick-borne illnesses.

Signs Of Brain Inflammation

Chat & Chew with Dr Kenneth Bock – Lyme Disease

Staceys elementary school years were punctuated by hypervigilance, school phobia, paranoia, fear of contamination, and uncontrollable rages. Together with neurological symptoms, like the foot drag and the tics, and the OCD, all the symptoms and behaviors screamed brain inflammation to me. Here are some of the other clues I observed:

Our Only Regret Is We Didnt Find Your Practice Sooner

Then an acquaintance recommended the medical detectives at Bock Integrative Medicine. From the start, Dr. Bocks compassion and knowledge of complex conditions made us confident that he could help. Lyme Disease At First Bite

The bite is as small as a pin poke, but tick-borne Lyme disease can impact a patients life for weeks, months or even years.

Dr. Steven Bock, who operates a private practice in Rhinebeck, has seen an upswing in the number of his patients in the last 29 years who suffer from Lyme disease. Nearly 75 percent of his patients have been treated for the illness, he said.

Lyme can then cause a range of symptoms, including headaches, joint pain or flu-like symptoms. Lyme can even affect cognitive functions, like loss of short term memory, Bock said.

The gamut of symptoms, Bock said, sends perplexed patients to several specialists, such as cardiologists, neurologists

and rheumatologists

before they cross the threshold into his office.

As the bacterium that causes Lyme disease works its way into a persons body, the microbes can hide from the immune system by changing form. The immune system, unable to detect the bacteria, cant develop specific antibodies and, instead, wreaks havoc on organ systems such as the skin, brain, nerves and joints.

Lyme disease is the great pretender, Bock said. It tries to mask itself in many ways.

One of the most common symptoms Lyme sufferers experience is joint pain, Bock said. The debilitating condition can cause stiffness and a lack of mobility, masking itself as rheumatoid arthritis. But unlike rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain caused by Lyme can suddenly shift from one joint to another, Bock said.

Our Daughter Got Her Life Back

Dr. Steven J Bock – doxycycline and its usefulness in lyme disease treatment

Our pre-teen daughter had always been active in sports and engaged at school. Suddenly she was complaining of aches and pains and was exhausted all the time. She became lethargic at school and no longer wanted to play soccer. Her pediatrician repeatedly dismissed her symptoms as growing pains and moodiness. Months later, our daughters symptoms had worsened to include headaches, swollen joints, shortness of breath, and more. For more than a year, we visited a variety of experts, all of whom told us it wasnt Lyme disease and prescribed a long list of medicines, ranging from anti-inflammatories to antidepressants, meant to ease her symptoms. Nothing helped. When another parent told me how much the chronic disease experts at Bock Integrative had helped his child, we knew I had to give Dr. Bock and Jennifer Petkos a try. The comprehensive approach they took in evaluating our daughters condition allowed them to diagnose her with two lesser-known tick-borne illnesses and they were able to design a treatment program that restored balance to her immune system. Shes now an active high school athlete and straight-A student. Thank you for giving our daughter her life back!~ Victoria, Hesler, Somerset, New Jersey

Study: Lyme Disease Found More In Suburbs

Findings from a study conducted by Binghamton University Lyme disease researchers Ralph M. Garruto and Amanda Roome revealed there are more infected ticks in suburban areas with heavy foot traffic.

“Where you have more people, you have more infected ticks,” Roome said Saturday during the Lyme Disease Conference at BU. “It’s not when you’re in the middle of nowhere backpacking in the Appalachian trail.”

The study began a conference presented by BU and Southern Tier Lyme Support Inc. at the university, drawing about 500 people.

Garruto, a research professor of biomedical anthropology at BU and a member of the National Academics of Sciences, began the study in 2011. Roome, a biomedical anthropology Ph.D. student at BU, joined the team of researchers and students in 2012.

Data were gathered across six counties in New York, including Broome County on BU’s campus, Wolfe Park, Aqua-Terra Park, Chenango Valley State Park and Finch Hollow Nature Center, among others.

“Usually, you think that the at-risk areas are when you’re hiking, when you’re in the backwoods,” Roome said in an interview following the presentation. “But it’s more where there’s populated areas is where the bigger problem is.”

Roome, Garruto and their team are working to finish up a model created by the study. Currently, the model is scaled down to BU’s campus. The next step is to expand the model to apply to the six counties studied and later make it more broadly applicable to the Northeast.

What You Can Expect

One size does not fit all and this cant be more true than when treating tick borne illness. The treatment journey is nearly as unique as ones fingerprint. One of the most often prescriptions I write is PATIENCE. This can be a long journey forward. And it is rarely a straight path. It will take time to understand your unique presentation, your particular responses to various therapies and to begin to recognize patterns. This will emerge only after consistent dedicated therapy. My goal for all my patients is to help you find, and sustain, enduring remission, and to live a life free from the daily migratory symptoms of Lyme illness. This will not be an easy path. And it will take everything youve got. But YOU CAN HEAL from Lyme.

Generally, my patients can expect to be in some sort of treatment, on average, for 12-15 months. Some shorter. Some longer. The initial visit must take place in person. Follow ups thereafter can be done by telemedicine.

At the initial visit you will begin the process of what is called Stabilization. It generally lasts four weeks, will continue ongoingly, and will begin to address what you uniquely need to stabilize in order to prepare for treatment. It usually falls into one of the following areas: sleep, pain, gut, mood. Basic supplements are started. Pharmaceuticals may be prescribed. Lab work is ordered. Further diagnostics are ordered, if needed.
