Untreated Lyme disease can produce a wide range of symptoms, depending on the stage of infection. These include fever, rash, facial paralysis, and arthritis.
The appearance of the erythema migrans rash can vary widely.
- Fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes may occur in the absence of rash

- Occurs in approximately 70 to 80 percent of infected persons
- Begins at the site of a tick bite after a delay of 3 to 30 days

- Severe headaches and neck stiffness
- Additional EM rashes on other areas of the body
- Arthritis with severe joint pain and swelling, particularly the knees and other large joints.

- Heart palpitations or an irregular heart beat
- Episodes of dizziness or shortness of breath
- Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord

Post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome
Even after proper treatment, some people may experience lingering fatigue, achiness or headaches. This is known as post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome or PTLDS. The symptoms dont mean that you still have an infection. PTLDS probably wont respond to additional antibiotics. The majority of people in this group will have symptoms that resolve at some point over the next six months.
Chronic Lyme disease
Chronic Lyme disease is a term used by some for a condition in a person who had Lyme disease and the symptoms of PTLDS. Some people consider chronic Lyme disease to be the same as PTLDS. However, some people receive a chronic Lyme disease diagnosis without a Lyme disease diagnosis. Sometimes, extended treatment with antibiotics helps.
This term may be why some people think a Lyme disease infection can occur without being bitten by a tick. There isn’t enough proof that mosquitoes can transmit Lyme disease. Many researchers dislike using the term chronic Lyme disease.

Final Lyme Disease Diagnosis
Our regular pediatrician wasnt working in the office that morning, so her colleague saw us. My son already had his shirt off when she walked into the exam room. She took one look at him and said yup. Thats lyme disease. She had another doctor give a second opinion, and my son was immediately put on antibiotics. She administered a lyme disease test just in case, but we werent taking any chances. Lyme disease treatment was started immediately.
Needless to say, we no longer go to our regular pediatrician. As the doctor, it was her job to rule out the possibility of lyme disease in my children given the fact that we live in Maryland. What the heck do I know?! I didnt get a medical degree.
My husband also had lyme disease we soon found out. Two of my men, one of whom wasnt even in New Hampshire, were obviously hit with tick bites in our Maryland neighborhood.
When To Contact A Doctor
Contact your doctor as soon as possible after youve been bitten by a tick. A doctor can determine if any treatment is necessary, based on the type of tick that bit you.
Different parts of the country have different risks when it comes to diseases from tick bites. If you live in an urban area without many ticks and get bitten elsewhere, your usual doctor may not readily identify the tick. If that is the case and youre uneasy, seek another opinion about treatment.
Let your doctor know if you were bitten in a geographical location known for severe tick-borne diseases, like the Western or Northeastern United States.
You should also let your doctor know if you developed any of the following symptoms after your tick bite:
intense itching in some people due to the toxins and irritants in tick saliva. However, itching doesnt always occur. For this reason, if you spend time in a tick-infested area, its important to check your whole body for ticks after you leave.
If a tick bite leads to Lyme disease, it can also lead to the development of lesions on the skin known as erythema migrans . These often dont trigger any further symptoms, but some people report that they feel itchiness and burning around the area of the lesion.

What About Tick Bites Where The Tick Is Still Attached
If you see a tick on your body and it doesnt brush off easily, youve probably caught it in the act. In this case, its important to remove it the right way, Dr. Esper says. Get a set of tweezers. Pull gently and straight up. Dont do a big jerkjust a nice, steady tug. A sudden, violent pull could dislodge the ticks head, Dr. Esper warns, which could then stay in your skin. The CDC advises using a fine-tipped set of tweezers.
Who’s At Risk Of Lyme Disease

Its not always possible to find a tick, so its important to pay close attention to your skin. If you notice any signs of Lyme disease or develop a rash, get medical care right away. Ticks can cause other serious diseases, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Can Lyme Disease Be Prevented
Not all cases of Lyme disease can be prevented. But you can help protect your family from tick bites. If you go into an area where ticks live, be sure to:
- Stay in the middle of the trail, instead of going through high grass or the woods.
- Wear closed shoes or boots, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants. Tuck pant legs into shoes or boots to prevent ticks from crawling up legs.
- Use an insect repellent.
- Consider treating clothing and gear with permethrin to repel ticks. When used properly, permethrin is safe for all ages. But don’t use it on clothing or other material a child may suck on or chew.
- Wear light-colored clothing to help you see ticks more easily.
- Shower and wash hair after being outside to remove ticks before they attach.
Should Dogs Be Vaccinated For Lyme Disease
In endemic regions, Lyme disease negative dogs should be vaccinated. As part of a Lyme disease prevention protocol, dogs must be vaccinated in addition to tick removal and control. One infected tick that escapes those first 2 barriers can easily cause infection.

The Lyme Disease Rash
One day after my son was swimming and took off his UV shirt I discovered large red circles on his torso, back and legs. At first, we thought it might be ringworm. Who knows how much lake water he had been drinking and what was in there. We began to use an anti fungal spray to combat the rash. We had no reason to think it was lyme. After all, everyone knows that the lyme disease rash has a bullseye in the center. Thats what all of the lyme disease rash pictures show at least, right?
Oh, how little we knew then.
How Long Does It Take For The Bullseye Rash To Show Up
Rash. From three to 30 days after an infected tick bite, an expanding red area might appear that sometimes clears in the center, forming a bulls-eye pattern. The rash expands slowly over days and can spread to 12 inches across.

Ticks are transmitters of diseases for humans and animals. Ticks can transmit disease to many hosts some cause economic harm such as Texas fever in cattle that can kill up to 90% of yearling cows. Ticks act as vectors when microbes in their saliva and mouth secretions get into the hosts skin and blood. Ticks were understood to be vectors of disease in the mid-1800s, and as investigative methods improved , more information showed the wide variety of diseases that could be transmitted by ticks.
There are many common names for various ticks , and these names appear in the scientific literature, too. Most common names represent a genus of ticks. However, the common name red may be used by people to describe almost any tick that has had a blood meal .

What Are The First Signs Of Lyme Disease In Dogs

What Does Lyme Disease In Children Look Like And What Should You Do
Summer time is here, and with it tiny critters that may look small, but have a powerful bite. My family has experienced Lyme disease in children first hand. Living in Maryland, you cant avoid ticks even if you try. Deer wander through our backyard, despite the fact that we live in an urban suburb just outside of Washington, D.C. They bring ticks with them. Lucky us.
Our Lyme Disease Misdiagnosis
When we got back home a few days later both boys had swimmers ear, so I figured we might as well get the rash rings looked at too. Our pediatrician listened to me tell her that we had been at the lake and I just assumed it was ringworm.
Even though we live in one of the highest concentrations of ticks in the country, she took my diagnosis and assumed I was right without even testing my child for lyme disease. I thought all was good. Four days later more spots had started to show up. This was obviously not getting better with an anti fungal.

What Diseases Do Ticks Transmit To Humans
Although most tick bites do not transmit pathogens, some bites do. It is not possible to determine if a tick is carrying pathogens visually. The following is a list of all of the major tick-borne diseases, the usual tick vector or common ticks, and the pathogen the tick species that, if known, transmits them in the United States.
This list shows that some ticks can transmit more than one type of pathogenic microbe . It is possible to transmit more than one pathogen in a single tick bite, although this rarely occurs. Outbreaks of tick-related illnesses follow seasonal patterns as ticks evolve from larvae to adults.
If The Tick Has Dropped Off
While tick bites dont immediately itch like other bug bites, they can still cause a red welt or itchy lesion to rise on the skin after the tick has dropped away, Ostfeld says.
The size and quality of this lesion can vary a lot from person to person, he says, and so it may be impossible to differentiate a tick bite from a mosquito bite. If the tick that bit you was not carrying Lyme disease or some other infection, the bite is likely to resemble a mosquito bite and quickly fade away.

But if you find a tick on your skin or notice an itchy lesion that doesnt go away within a few days, that could indicate Lyme disease or some other kind of tick-borne infection. The same is true of a large, bulls-eye-shaped skin lesion something that looks like a red welt surrounded by one or more outer rings of inflamed red skin. This bulls-eye rash is a hallmark of Lyme disease.
