Rhode Island Legislature Takes Large Leap for Lyme Patients Bill Mandating Insurance Coverage for Lyme Treatment Unanimously Passes Senate, Governor Signs

East ProvidenceJuly 7, 2003 proved to be a fateful day for Lyme patients in Rhode Island. Governor Donald Carcieri signed into law the Lyme Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Act , which unanimously passed in both RI House and Senate on July 2, 2003. Thanks to the leadership and work of the Lyme Disease Association, Rhode Island Chapter, the integrity of the act was maintained and it mandates coverage for physician-prescribed Lyme disease treatment predicated upon thorough physician evaluation of the patient.

Treatment must be covered by insurance companies who are licensed in Rhode Island beginning in 2004. A sunset provision was incorporated into the bill-the bill will expire at the end of 2004, so that its impact may be assessed and evaluated by the legislature to determine further action.

Lyme is the fastest growing vector-borne disease in this country. Rhode Island has the second highest per capita instance of the disease in the nation, behind Connecticut. When the disease is treated early and appropriately, patients generally recover. Chronic disease can develop when the bacteria enters the central nervous system and also penetrates and hides inside the bodys cells, making eradication difficult. These patients often require long-term treatment, sometimes with IV.

Nk Doctor Defends Lyme Disease Treatment Practices

NORTH KINGSTOWNFor many local residents, Dr. James Gloor has been a crucial resource in their fight against Lyme Disease. Now, the North Kingstown practitioner of 32 years is the subject of a Rhode Island Department of Health investigation, one which he claims is unfair and guided by special interest.

Since 2012, Gloor, who operates Wickford Junction Medical Walk-In on Ten Rod Road, has been investigated by the RIDOHs Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline, which originally claimed that he had been misdiagnosing and mistreating patients for Lyme disease after receiving complaints from six of his patients. Gloor claims that the board and its members are targeting him in a witch-hunt, and that the RIDOH and Rhode Island Hospital are ignoring patients who have appealed to them for treatment of chronic Lyme disease. For more of this story pick up a copy of todays Standard-Times.

my patients at Rhode Island Hospital, she has been brow beaten there, saying to her, you dont have Lyme, said Gloor. It was verified by Leslie Fein in N.J., and she sends it back up and says, you guys missed it at Rhode Island Hospital.

Then they say she does not, it is a psych case, he continued. There is a big, black hole at Rhode Island Hospital and Lifespan, and we need to shine the light on desired incompetence, a chosen path of ignoring an epidemic. We are in the middle of an epidemic and we have our major hospital denying anything is going on.

Lifespan Lyme Disease Center Enrolling Ri Adults To Learn More About Ongoing Symptoms

Progressive Charlestown: Chronic Lyme disease

PROVIDENCE, R.I. If you have a suspected or recently confirmed case of Lyme disease, researchers in Rhode Island are hoping you consider joining a new, international clinical research study.

The Lifespan Lyme Disease Center at The Miriam Hospital is currently enrolling adults in hopes of helping them learn more about the condition, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says affected more than 500 Rhode Islanders in 2019.

Dr. Jennie Johnson, an infectious disease specialist who serves as director of the center, says it is enrolling patients in a Lyme disease trial in hopes of finding better diagnostics and testing for the condition.

The Lifespan Lyme Disease Center is a multidisciplinary center entirely dedicated to the treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

We actually have a lot of experience with post-infectious syndromes, namely in Rhode Island, Lyme disease and the Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome that we see in people, Johnson said.

Johnson says people with PTLDS have had their infection treated and cured, but still have ongoing symptoms, including pain, fatigue, exercise intolerance, or difficulty thinking that lasts for more than six months after they finish treatment.

Right now, the vast majority of our tests for Lyme disease only tell us that people have had Lyme disease or been exposed to the bacteria and made antibodies, Johnson said.

Why Is Lyme Disease So Difficult To Diagnose And Treat

Woman

There is no simple answer to this question. Scientists around the globe continue to uncover new strains of Lyme and other co-infections, complicating the ability to identify and or eradicate invasive organisms with 100% accuracy.

The Infectious Disease Society of America and the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society have published recommendations for diagnosing and treating Lyme , as well as identifying the possible causes of relapsing or persistent symptoms. Presently there is not full consensus between the two organizations and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adding to the confusion in addressing this public health crisis.

Lyme is referred to as the great imitator, often mimicking other illnesses. When discussing the likelihood of Lyme with your health care practitioner, understand that he/she may be wedded to one possible diagnosis and treatment, depending on his/her professional exposure.

Prior to the pandemic, she would provide Lyme education presentations at libraries and other venues throughout the state. She also held monthly meetings for Lyme patients. Now she talks to individuals by phone.
