Diagnosing & Treating Lyme Disease Online

Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi. This bacteria is transmitted to humans when they are bitten by an infected blacklegged tick aka the deer or bear tick. Since these ticks are so small, it can be difficult to know when you have a tick on you or if you have been bitten. If you have been bitten, you will typically produce symptoms of fever, headache, fatigue and a skin rash in the shape of a bulls-eye. This bulls-eye shaped rash is also known as erythema migrans.

The rash can gradually grow over a period of days. Sometimes, the rash can grow to about 12 inches across! The rash may be warm to touch, but rarely itches or is painful. If there is a chance you have been exposed to ticks recently, it is important to check your body for the creepy crawlers because you might not be able to feel the reaction.

The chances of getting Lyme disease from a tick bite will depend on the following:

  • The kind of tick
  • Where you were when the bite occurred
  • How long the tick was attached to you

These ticks will have to be attached to you for at least 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease. If Lyme disease is left untreated, the infection can spread to the joints, the heart and the nervous system.

Options for treatment of Lyme disease may include:

  • A prescription of antibiotics
  • A prescription for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories
  • A referral to a specialist
  • Where a bloodwork test may be administered

Lyme disease symptoms can vary, but patients typically experience:

Symptoms Of Lyme Disease

A circular or oval shape rash around a tick bite can be an early symptom of Lyme disease in some people.

The rash can appear up to 3 months after being bitten by an infected tick, but usually appears within 1 to 4 weeks. It can last for several weeks.

The rash can have a darker or lighter area in the centre and might gradually spread. It’s not usually hot or itchy.

The rash may be flat, or slightly raised, and look pink, red, or purple when it appears on white skin. It can be harder to see the rash on brown and black skin and it may look like a bruise.

Some people also get flu-like symptoms a few days or weeks after they were bitten by an infected tick, such as:

  • a high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery
  • tiredness and loss of energy

Some people with Lyme disease develop more severe symptoms months or years later.

This is more likely if treatment is delayed.

These more severe symptoms may include:

  • pain and swelling in joints
  • nerve problems such as pain or numbness
  • trouble with memory or concentration

How To Remove A Tick

Ticks have 24 hours to sink in their evil magic. According to the CDC, to remove a tick you simply take a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, like these, grasp the tick as close to the surface of the skin as possible and pull upward. Flush the tick down the toilet as soon as possible. Do NOT crush it with your fingers. Wash the skin area with rubbing alcohol, iodine scrub or soap and water. Monitor your childs health for a rash or fever over the next few weeks.

What Are Risk Factors For Developing Lyme Disease

Lyme disease occurs most frequently in children 5-14 years of age and adults 40-50 years of age. The most substantial risk factor for Lyme disease is

  • exposure to the ticks located in the high-risk areas of the country listed above,
  • particularly in the New England states,
  • as well as Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Additional risk factors include recreational and occupational exposure to ticks and outdoor activities, including

  • gardening, in woods, and
  • fields in the high-risk areas.

No transplacental transmission of Lyme disease from the mother to the unborn child has ever been described. Again, Lyme disease is not contagious from one person to another.

What Makes Yale Medicines Approach To Lyme Disease Unique

The discovery of Lyme disease is actually credited to two Yale physiciansAllan Steere, MD, and Stephen Malawista, MDwho identified the mysterious inflammatory disease after a rash of illnesses cropped up during the summer of 1975. That year, two mothers living in Old Lyme, Conn., refused to accept the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis among the children living in their town.

The mothers reached out to the Connecticut State Department of Health and the Yale School of Medicine for help, starting an epidemiological study that would ultimately uncover the bacterial infection transmitted by ticks. Today, doctors in Yale Medicines neurology department provide care for patients who have infections that affect the nervous system.

Thanks to a powerful partnership with research programs at Yale Medicine, patients benefit from the most recent advantages in treatment.

What To Know About Seeing A Doctor And Getting Tested

Whatever kind of doctor you see, they will consider your medical history, your symptoms, and your Lyme disease test results when making a diagnosis. They should perform what is known as a differential diagnosis in order to rule out common misdiagnoses, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ALS, MS, etc.

Many doctors rely on the two-tier system recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which consists of the following two blood tests:

  • Western blot test

However, research shows that these tests are severely limited in accuracy and sensitivity. A LLMD may be able to help you get tested with newer and more accurate testing technology.

Lyme disease recovery starts with finding a doctor who has sufficient experience with Lyme as well as access to the right diagnostic testing. To learn more about what tests are available for Lyme disease today, including IGeneXs ImmunoBlot test, check out the blog The Best Test for Lyme Disease.

Nearly 90% of colorectal cancer patients are age 50 or older, so doctors recommend that everyone over 45 get a colonoscopy every 10 years.

But diagnoses in younger adults have been rising: New cases of colorectal cancer went up more than 2% each year among people under 50 from 2012 to 2016, according to the American Cancer Society.

“Theres an expectation there will be 15% of colorectal cancers in people under 50 not too long from now,” said Dr. Joel Levine, co-director of the Colon Cancer Prevention Program at UConn Health.

Overall, the rate of new colorectal cancer cases in the U.S. has declined, from around 67 per 100,000 people in 1985 to around 34 in 2019, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Early signs of the disease can include rectal bleeding or changes in bowel movements such as constipation or diarrhea. Patients with more advanced illness may also experience abdominal pain, fatigue, anemia, weight loss or decreased appetite.

But Levine said people should get colonoscopies even when they feel healthy.

“One of the reasons Im so fussy about not waiting for symptoms is because it leads to, ‘Well, I feel alright, everythings OK.’ And by the time you have a symptom, the horse is a little bit out of the barn,” he said.

Colonoscopies allow doctors to examine the colon and remove precancerous growths, which can prevent cancer from forming. However, the procedure requires sedation or anesthesia and can cost thousands of dollars without insurance.

Ticks and Lyme Disease: What You Need to Know

One day after my son was swimming and took off his UV shirt I discovered large red circles on his torso, back and legs. At first, we thought it might be ringworm. Who knows how much lake water he had been drinking and what was in there. We began to use an anti fungal spray to combat the rash. We had no reason to think it was lyme. After all, everyone knows that the lyme disease rash has a bullseye in the center. Thats what all of the lyme disease rash pictures show at least, right?

Oh, how little we knew then.

How Is Lyme Disease Treated

With early-stage Lyme disease, youâll take antibiotics for about 10 days to 3 weeks. The most common ones are amoxicillin, cefuroxime, and doxycycline. The antibiotics will almost always cure your infection. If they donât, you might get other antibiotics either by mouth or as a shot.

If you donât treat your Lyme infection, you might need oral antibiotics for symptoms like weakened face muscles and irregular heartbeat. You may need antibiotics if you have meningitis, inflammation in your brain and spinal cord, or more severe heart problems.

If your Lyme is late stage, the doctor might give you antibiotics either by mouth or as a shot. If it causes arthritis, youâll get arthritis treatment.

Thereâs no therapy for post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome.

How To Spot And Remove Ticks

Once youve come in from outside, one of the best ways to check yourself for ticks is to take a shower and bath.

Other than that, do your best to check your clothes, especially the folds of your clothes, knowing that ticks can be very small and hard to spot. Running your hands through your hair is also a good idea.

In early disseminated Lyme disease, the infection has started to move beyond the site of your tick bite to other parts of your body such as your heart, brain, or spinal cord. Lyme disease that has moved to the brain is sometimes referred to as Lyme neuroborreliosis, or neurological Lyme disease.

Common symptoms of early disseminated Lyme disease include:

  • More than one EM rash

  • Pain that may come and go and move around the body, in joints, tendons, muscles, and bones

  • Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord , which can cause severe headache, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light and sound

  • Numbness, weakness, or tingling in the arms and legs

  • Weakness or drooping on one or both sides of the face difficulty closing an eyelid

  • Inflammation of the heart that can cause heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, or fainting. If you are experiencing any of these heart symptoms, seek immediate medical care.

You may also experience a worsening of earlier Lyme disease symptoms.

Lyme disease can cause joint pain , a stiff neck , or weakness or drooping on one or both sides of the face, known as facial palsy .
