Resources On How To Heal Lyme Disease Naturally

Lyme disease isnt something Ive dealt with personally and I havent done much studying done on it as of yet. But I wanted to get together a good article for resources for people trying to learn more about this insidious disease, especially as it is supposed to be a very bad year for ticks. It is possible to heal though, and I know many that are beating Lymes butt naturally and successfully.

Updated 3/2019: I started reading quite a bit more about Lyme and co a few months ago when I learned that I likely have Bartonella myself. I personally am comfortable with Buhners information on the herbs and how to typically treat these infections, as long as they are coupled with good foundational care.

Lyme Disease Treatment: 2 Herbal Compounds May Beat Antibiotics

Lyme disease transmitted via tick bite affects thousands of people in the United States and around the world. Currently, doctors use antibiotics to treat it, but could plant-based remedies be more effective?

Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi .

The disease spreads to humans through the bite of a tick that carries the bacterium, and it affects an estimated each year in the U.S. alone.

Currently, healthcare professionals choose between three antibiotics in the treatment of Lyme disease. These are doxycycline, cefuroxime, and amoxicillin.

Sometimes, however, antibiotics are not effective in eradicating all traces of B. burgdorferi from the system, which means that the disease can persist.

When this happens, bacterial cells that have developed antibiotic resistance can continue to proliferate. These are known as persister cells .

Because of this, researchers have been looking into alternative modes of fighting the bacterium, and their first line of inquiry has focused on natural remedies.

In 2018, an in vitro study suggested that 10 plant-derived essential oils could help fight off B. burgdorferi.

Now, researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD, and from the California Center for Functional Medicine and Focus Health in Berkeley, have conducted a new study that has led them to believe that two specific plants may lead to more effective therapies against Lyme disease.

Why Antibiotics May Not Work For Lyme Disease

  • Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, has a corkscrew shape that allows it to bore deep into tissues and cartilage , safely out of reach of most antibiotics.
  • Borrelia burgdorferi can give up its corkscrew shape and convert to a form that is able to live inside cells where again, antibiotics have less reach.
  • Borrelia burgdorferi, along with other similar microbes, can form dormant cysts that are completely resistant to antibiotics the harder you hit it, the more resistant it becomes.
  • Borrelia burgdorferi is usually accompanied and aided by co-infections of other stealth microbes that also live inside cells.

Antibiotic resistance occurs at a high rate with these types of microbes. An antibiotic is one single chemical substance. Bacteria, such as Borrelia , respond slowly to antibiotics and have more time to develop resistance to the antibiotic. In other words, the longer they can hang on, the more likely they are to become completely antibiotic resistant. Using multiple antibiotics at once seems to accelerate this process and alternating antibiotics doesnt seem to help. Resistant bacteria become even more entrenched.

Antibiotics destroy the normal flora in the gut and skin, causing bacterial imbalance and a host of other symptoms in the body. Most importantly, use of antibiotics suppresses immune function, which may present the greatest hurdle to recoveryyou cannot get well without optimal immune function.

Taking A Bite Out Of Lyme What To Do If You Are Bitten By A Tick

What if you are bitten? Do not panic, as there is plenty that both conventional and naturopathic medicine can do acutely to prevent infection from taking hold and causing illness. First things first, however, you must remove the tick safely.

Do not use anything to suffocate the tick, as this may cause the tick to regurgitate its contents into you and expose your body to Borrelia burgdorferi and other species of Borrelia that cause Lyme disease, as well as its co-infections. Use flat-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick at the base of the head and slowly but firmly pull the tick from the skin in the same direction that it is implanted.

Once the tick is removed, use a clear plastic sealable bag to store it. Apply hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound. Mix bentonite clay and Andrographis tincture to form a paste and apply it directly to the bite. Cover with a bandage soaked in the Andrographis tincture and let it heal.

The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society recommends that those experiencing Erythema migrans undergo antibiotic therapy for four to six weeks.

    Banderol And Cats Claw

“These two herbs are commonly dosed together because they work synergistically with clinically proven action against Borrelia species,” Greenspan says. “The goals with any treatment with Lyme disease spirochetes, whether chronic or acute, is to have a combination of herbs to be effective with the shape-shifting behavior of this microbe.”

    The Salt/c Plus Protocol:

A popular Lyme disease natural treatment protocol that has provided relief to thousands of people, is called the Salt/C Plus protocol. It has been found to be particularly effective at permanently alleviating chronic and rapidly degenerative Lyme disease infection, where aggressive antibiotic treatment has failed.

At its most basic level, it involves taking increasingly large doses of Vitamin C along with pure sea salt. Using what is referred to as the scale up method for dosing. The protocol is often used for long periods of time with results sometimes achieved very early on but may also be achieved after long term use. This is believed to be from the bacteria hibernating so to speak, within the body.

Some bacteria are now known to have developed a strategy of hiding within host cells to escape the immune system as well as many antibacterial treatments.

This essentially means that the bacteria can lie dormant inside host cells and may become a source of relapsing infection . The sudden or sporadic change or decrease in symptoms is consistent with the microbes eventually succumbing to the steady and continuous Salt/C Plus application.

The Salt/C Plus protocol is designed to eventually eliminate harmful bacteria and microbes from the human body, even those not caused by Lyme disease.

    How To Prevent Lyme

    Healing Lyme Disease Naturally

Although its difficult, the best way to prevent Lyme disease is to avoid ticks and blood-sucking insects. An environmentally friendly farm with good manure handling can help keep biting insects away. Guinea hens love to eat ticks, and chickens can also do a fair job. If you live in the woods, these birds may be the only way to keep the tick population down.

No Lyme vaccines have been approved for horses and many veterinarians, including myself, see many problems in horses after using the dog vaccine. It does not seem to work, and horses who have been vaccinated often seem to become chronically sick with Lyme, especially if they were infected before receiving the vaccine.

In the end, a healthy immune system is the most important way you can protect your horse from Lyme disease.

Avoid Processed Junk Food Sugar And Gluten

Our bodies arent designed to handle all any of the chemicals in processed food. And, because Lyme is an inflammatory condition its best to avoid sugar and gluten. Many people also find it helpful to avoid dairy.

I thought my diet was pretty healthy before. But once I cut out most of the processed foods it really helped reduce the inflammation and body pain I was having.

Now, if I eat packaged foods, gluten, or a sugary dessert, I feel it in my body. Or as I sometimes say, I pay for it later. I end up regretting it because my joints hurt.

But its always a good reminder to me of how much healing real food provides for our bodies. And its great motivation to maintain a healthy diet full of real food, avoiding the junk.

Recognizing The Types Of Ticks That Carry Lyme Disease And Co

Most people are aware that a deer tick ranges in size from a sesame seed to that of a poppy seed, while a dog tick is much larger.

What most people do not know is that a fully engorged deer tick is the same size of a fully engorged dog tick!

Nymph ticks are harder to spot, as they are much smaller than an adult deer tick, are a translucent/pale color, and are as small as the period at the end of this sentence. It is very common to not realize that you have been bitten by a tick, and to never find the tick that transmitted Lyme disease to you. These ticks are usually hidden well enough to become fully engorged and drop off without your awareness, which is how most people contract Lyme and other co-infections.

“…less than half of people diagnosed with Lyme have a history of a known tick bite or bullseye rash.”

Remember, you do not need to have found a tick on your body or to have developed Erythema migrans to be diagnosed with Lyme disease. In fact, less than half of people diagnosed with Lyme have a history of a known tick bite or bullseye rash. If you do develop any of these symptoms, talk with your doctor about proper testing, or find a Lyme literate practitioner who knows how to diagnose and treat appropriately.

    Solvents Chemicals & Pesticides

I also tested high for solvents and attribute this to living near the freeway in San Francisco and on Wilshire Blvd for years in Los Angeles. We used to get black soot on our patio and we were breathing that in our home to. Always be very conscious of where you are living and dont live too close to freeways or busy roads. Also make sure to have a chemical free home and buy organic to avoid pesticides. Moving away from the freeway and living by the beach as well as all the detox I was doing fortunately cleared the solvents from my body.

It is very important to use non toxic cleaning products and beauty and skin care products as well as we want to limit our chemical exposure while trying to detox and heal.

How Mineral Imbalances Play A Role In Lyme

LYME DISEASE TREATMENT ] How I Healed Naturally ] MY TIPS

Copper is a crucial mineral for pathogen management in the body. All of my clients that have tested positive for any kind of pathogen have a copper imbalance. Our environment is pretty much set up for us to create this imbalance. We need healthy livers and adrenals to create the copper binding protein . When copper becomes hard for the body to balance, we can also become imbalanced with iron. I see some people with Lyme that have high iron storage, and I see some that have low iron- depends on the person and what their history is on if they start to hoard iron or if they are just outright deficient because of how minerals can become skewed under the stress of dealing with a pathogen.

No matter what you are fighting, you have to be sure to start working on your foundation as well we cannot always just go in and attack these infections. If we were strong to begin with, we wouldnt be dealing with these things to begin with, or at least they wouldnt be so devastating.

Getting to the bottom of copper and iron imbalances

Get an HTMA done, and get these blood labs drawn: copper serum, zinc plasma or serum, ceruloplasmin, iron, ferritin, TIBC, Saturation %, and transferrin. If youre lucky enough to have an understanding doctor, ask them to request the labs. If not, check out Request a Test or Walk-In Lab .

Don’t Miss: What Does Lyme Look Like

    Lyme Disease Symptoms And Causes

The Most Common Lyme Disease Symptoms:

Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria that is transmitted by the tick or insect can spread throughout the body and cause a series of autoimmune-like reactions. Research done by the Department of Rheumatology at University of Würzburg in Germany shows that symptoms of Lyme disease are far-reaching and commonly affect the skin, heart, joints and nervous system.

Symptoms and signs of Lyme disease include:

    • A temporary butterfly skin rash that appears where the tick bite occurred . Many, but not all, develop a rash shaped like a bulls eye that appears as a red ring around a clear area with a red center. The CDC reports that around 70 percent of Lyme disease patients develop this rash
    • Flu-like symptoms, especially shortly after being infected. These include a fever, trouble sleeping, neck pain, fatigue, chills, sweats and muscle aches
    • Poor sleep, chronic fatigue and lethargy
    • Digestive issues, including nausea and loss of appetite
    • Achiness and joint pains. The CDC has found that around 30 percent of Lyme patients develop symptoms of arthritis
    • Long-term many people experience mood changes, included increased depression and fatigue
    • Cognitive changes are also a long-term symptom and include forgetfulness, headaches, brain fog, misplacing things and trouble concentrating

The REAL Cause of Lyme Disease:

  • Weakened immunity
  • Inhibited cellular function and protection
  • Systemic bacterial infection
  • Remedy: Ledum Palustre 200c

Ledum is the foremost remedy for any kind of animal bite.

    • Give the first dose of this remedy at the time you remove the tick.
    • Continue dosing with Ledum every 3 hours for the first day
    • Then, dose twice daily for a week
    • After the first week, dose twice weekly for a month
    • Then once per week for another month

This is probably overkill, but worth the extra effort to be certain.

If the tick was discovered in the last few days, Step 1 is likely all youll need.

But if your dog has been diagnosed with Lyme disease that is older and more entrenched, follow Step 1 as above, then add Step 2 at any time after using Ledum.
