Mercury toxicity has been linked to chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, cognitive decline , chronic headaches including migraines, joint pain, Candida overgrowth, and much more. The body cannot fend off Lyme under such conditions. People with a history or poor diet, antibiotic use, mercury fillings, or immunizations, are extremely susceptible to Lyme disease and the many co-infections the come with it.

The Best Supplements For Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is well-known for the inflammatory responses it creates in the body. This happens anytime the body senses a foreign bacterium. Inflammation is used as a defense mechanism. It seeks, finds, and destroys the enemy. Unfortunately, with Lyme disease, it is not always that simple.

When inflammation is constantly present in your body, you can experience swelling, soreness, tenderness, and chronic pain in every area of the body. Lyme bacteria are very good at hiding in your bloodstream and going dormant to avoid detection. This puts inflammation on a continual hunt for bacteria but without success.

Treatment for Lyme disease typically consists of antibiotics.

Understanding The Acute Inflammatory Response

Suppose youre walking barefoot in the yard one summer day and accidentally step on a sharp piece of glass hidden in the grass. Pain alerts you to the injury and you stop to assess the situation. If the wound isnt deep, youre up to date on your tetanus vaccination, and a rinse in the sink reveals no foreign objects in the wound, you place a bandage over the area, and youre back on your way.

Swelling occurs because blood vessels dilate to allow an influx of WBCs and flush the area with fluid. Macrophages and arriving WBCs engulf debris, foreign matter, and microbes that have entered through the open wound, and destroy the material with potent free radicals and hypochlorous acid. Its a noxious process that causes collateral damage to normal cells, but its part of the healing process.

Once the injury is contained and the mess is cleaned up, WBCs migrate out of the area. Surviving cells repair damage from the injury and the inflammatory process itself. Gradually evidence of the injury disappears like nothing had ever happened.

Antimicrobial Treatments For Lyme Disease

Common Herbs Used To Treat Lyme Disease

The conventional medical approach to Lyme disease treatment in adults is a ten to 21-day course of the antibiotic doxycycline.1 However, a growing body of research shows that this treatment is insufficient, if not completely ineffective, for cases of chronic Lyme disease. Functional medicine offers a far more comprehensive approach to the antimicrobial treatment of Lyme disease. Read on to learn about the types of antimicrobial treatment options available, and how they can be combined for optimal effect.

Keeping Cells Free Of Debris

You depend on your immune system to keep the spaces between cells free of debris so that they get good flow. Specialized immune cells, called macrophages, constantly patrol your tissues searching for debris they are the garbage collectors of the immune system. Macrophages engulf debris from dead cells and then break it down with strong acid and potent free radicals.

This process is happening in the body all the timeyou couldnt survive without it. As long as the collection of debris doesnt exceed the capacity of the immune system to clean it up, you never know its happening. Its deemed inflammation only when accumulation of debris from cell turnover is greater than the immune system can process.

Tissues congested with debris stresses cells. When cells suffer, you feel it as symptoms. The type of symptoms depend on the types and location of cells that are suffering. Symptoms associated with inflammation can be transient and localized when cell injury is finite, such as with an acute injury, or chronic and systemic when cell injury is ongoing, such as with chronic Lyme disease or really any chronic illness.

Lets take a look at inflammation in more detail, particularly chronic inflammation as it impacts people with Lyme disease, along with the best ways to quash it.

How Herbal Supplements Can Help

The best way to gain the level of phytochemical protection you need to help your immune system win the internal battle against invasive microbes is to take herbal supplements specifically, standardized botanical extracts.

Standardized botanical extracts take herbal supplements to the next level. Theyre made with wild plants or plants that have been cultivated to enhance their phytochemical content and are grown in an environment that doesnt introduce unwanted chemical toxins. The extraction process also yields the greatest concentration and the widest spectrum of phytochemicals in the plant. And the final product is standardized to a concentration of one or several key phytochemicals in the plant, so you know what youre getting.

Below are a few of my favorite herbs for mitigating the systemic chronic inflammation associated with chronic Lyme disease. Though all of the herbs have value in suppressing microbes and reducing inflammation, three of the herbs mentioned below Japanese knotweed, cats claw, and Chinese skullcap were found in a 2020 study from Johns Hopkins University to have greater activity against Borrelia burgdorferi than the antibiotics, doxycycline and azithromycin.

Treatment Round #: Antibiotics

My initial Lyme treatment looked like a whole lot of antibioticsdoxycycline, plus two others that were supposedly beneficial for combating common Lyme co-infections. And this was fine with me. Given the severity of my symptoms, I was willing to try anything. Plus, at the time, I didn’t really know I had any other options.

Because I’d likely had Lyme for years by the time I began treatment, it took some time for me to notice any results. But soon, there was no question the drugs were working. After three months, I had less pain after six months, I could walk around the block and after nine months, I could go on a 2-mile hike. All told, I was on this combination of antibiotics for about two years , after which I felt completely symptom-freesomething I never, ever expected.

And I felt pretty great for about a year. But then I’d start to feel a bit more achy than usual after walking my ankles and knees would get red, hot, and painful I started to notice that old tingling sensation in my arms and legs and eventually, I was struggling to walk again. My Lyme was re-emerging even after lengthy antibiotic treatmentand apparently, that’s not uncommon. This, I’ve since learned, is partially due to the spirochete shape of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease , which allows some forms of the bacteria to essentially burrow deep into your tissue and lay dormant only to re-emerge later when conditions are more favorable.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by bacteria also called as spirochetewhich was first recognized in 1975 that affects your skin as well as different organs like heart, joints and nervous system. It is a tick-borne disease and not contagious, you are more likely to get lyme disease if you spend more time in grassy and wooded areas.Lyme disease is spread when these ticks bite the skin, permitting the bacteria to infect the body. Symptoms of lyme disease includes fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, stiff neck, muscle aches, depression, headache and characterized by a rash on the skin called erythema migrans.Several patients reported having a skin rash developed just before lyme. Infections and symptoms are eliminated by antibiotic, delayed treatment can lead to serious problems, which can be disabling to treat. Below given are a few herbs that help to treat lyme disease.

Increasing Effectiveness Of Lyme Disease Activities Moving Forward

The Federal Framework and Action Plan states that work will continue only until 2022, however, PHAC’s involvement in Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness activities will continue past this date. In light of this, we offer the following recommendations to increase the effectiveness for activities moving forward.

Recommendation 2

  • Work to implement more timely and dynamic surveillance tools.

PHAC surveillance products help paint the national picture and demonstrate risk across jurisdictional borders however, evidence suggests that products were not meeting stakeholders’ information needs. Some stakeholders suggested that interactive and dynamic tools could help improve use of surveillance products, such as risk maps. Timely updates to risk maps, and enhancements to the visual depictions of risk areas to improve usability were also suggested.

Recommendation 3

  • Enhance efforts to promote and disseminate awareness and education materials and guidance to existing and new knowledge users, including health professionals.

Recommendation 4

  • Consider enhancements to engagement processes and partnerships with patient advocacy groups related to tick-borne disease activities, as these continue beyond the completion of the Federal Framework. This may include clearly communicating actions that result from the engagement, and setting clearly defined roles and expectations for all participants.

Mic Values Of The Active Natural Product Extracts

Because the activity of antibiotics against non-growing B. burgdorferi is not always correlated with their activity against growing bacteria , we therefore determined the MICs of these natural product extracts against the replicating B. burgdorferi as described previously . The MIC values of some natural product extracts such as Artemisia annua, Juglans nigra, Uncaria tomentosa were quite high for growing B. burgdorferi, despite their strong activity against the non-growing stationary phase B. burgdorferi cells . On the other hand, the top two active natural product extracts Cryptolepis sanguinolenta and Polygonum cuspidatum showed strong activity against the growing B. burgdorferi with a low MIC and also non-growing stationary phase B. burgdorferi .

Understanding The Different Types Of Lyme Disease: Acute Vs Chronic

Because of Dr. Rawls experience with untreated Lyme disease flaring up after decades of dormancy, he views chronic Lyme disease and all chronic conditions differently than many other physicians and patients. He sees chronic disease as largely a result of immune dysfunction, which can be triggered by a number of different factors. There are thousands upon thousands of chronic illnesses, but when you look at the symptoms, they all bunch together, so the concept of a diagnosis is often a little artificial.

To understand how this works, Dr. Rawls says you must also understand that there are two types of Lyme disease, acute and chronic. Acute Lyme disease occurs when the Lyme microbe first comes into your body: You get a tick bite, the microbe enters your system, and theres an acute tug-of-war between your immune system and the microbe because youve never seen it before, he explains. This internal tug-of-war happens within weeks of getting a tick bite and is accompanied by symptoms like fatigue, stiff neck, mild fever, and aches and pains. Eventually, either the microbe wins or the immune system wins, and your body reaches a place of resolution.

Lyme Disease In Canada

Herbs for Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. This bacterium can be spread to humans and animals through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks and western blacklegged ticks. Infection by the bacteria can lead to human illness. Lyme disease is one of several illnesses which can be spread by ticks, also called “tick-borne diseases.”

Lyme disease usually results in a skin lesion called an erythema migrans rashFootnote i and non-specific symptoms including fatigue, fever, headache, and muscle and joint pains. If left untreated, it can disseminate through the bloodstream and affect other parts of the body. Patients with late infection may develop arthritis , and, less commonly, neuropathy . While Lyme disease is rarely fatal, there have been recorded deaths as a result of Lyme carditis .Reference 1Reference 2 Lyme disease may be missed or misdiagnosed, resulting in increased risk for serious illness. It is therefore important to identify, diagnose, and treat Lyme disease in its early phases.Reference 3

Box 1: Lyme Disease by the Numbers, 2009-2019

Chronic Lyme Disease Treatment Options: Antibiotics Vs Herbal Treatment For Lyme Disease

For Dr. Rawls, herbal therapy was the key to resolving his untreated Lyme and restoring his health. Because of his own personal experience and the research and science behind herbal treatment for Lyme disease, he believes that it is one of the most effective ways to treat chronic Lyme and other chronic conditions. Still, hes careful to point out that there is a time and place for herbal therapy and a time and place for antibiotics.

Sometimes people look at herbs and drugs as things that we can substitute one for another, but they really act totally differently, he says. Each one serves a different role, and what it ultimately comes down to is the different types of Lyme disease. For acute Lyme, Dr. Rawls says that antibiotics are often a better choice than herbal therapy. What were doing there is knocking down the microbes enough that it helps the immune system get a better grasp of that situation, he says. So I do advocate antibiotics for acute Lyme disease.

But things are different with chronic Lyme disease. Dr. Rawls says that many conventional physicians believe that the answer to chronic Lyme disease is a long-term course of powerful antibiotics were talking six months to a year and while this can sometimes work, it usually doesnt, and can come with some serious health consequences.
