A Store At The Lyme Academy Of Fine Arts Is Transporting Customers Back In Time

Fashionable art supply stores in the 19th century, like Sennelier in Paris and L. Cornelissen in London, were a feast for the eyes, replete with macabre taxidermy, exotic seashells and other curios from around the world.

In a commercial landscape that is, today, dominated by cookie-cutter big-box stores, the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts is taking a different route transforming its art supply store to look like one of those eccentric relics of the past.

Stepping inside de Gerendays Fine Art Materials and Curiosities, you are greeted by the music of Django Reinhardt playing in the background and surrounded by thick, well-worn, antique wooden tables and cabinets. The furniture is stocked with art supplies as you might well expect.

Whats unexpected are the curios peppered among the paintbrushes and sketchpads things like masks, antiques, taxidermic animal heads and jewelry.

These are the items artists want to use in their still-life paintings and drawings, said Mora Rowe, executive director of the Lyme Academy. One of our goals would be to create a cabinet of curiosities for our artists, so that when they are drawing they could come and borrow a shell, or take a piece of taxidermy and they could draw it. Its a way to inspire creativity.

Go into an old hardware store, Rowe said. It hasnt changed for generations, it has this feel.

Once you have a Net Price estimate, youll want to figure out whether your family can afford to pay Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts tuition and costs. Once again, the Net Price is the total cost of attending, minus the aid you can expect to get . Its the amount youd have to cover yourself.

The US government has come up with a standardized way to calculate how much a typical family can afford to pay without help. They call this the Expected Family Contribution, or EFC.

As an example, a family that brings home $80,000 in income before taxes, with no assets and no other children in college, has an EFC of around $7,000. This is the amount the government thinks that family can reasonably pay, and the school will have to step in and cover the rest.

Colleges use this number as a guideline to decide how much aid to give you, but its just a guideline. Some schools will be stingier with aid, and youll have to pay more than the governments suggested EFC.

So were going to calculate your EFC and compare it to Lyme Academy College of Fine Artss Net Price. If the Net Price is higher than the EFC, the school will cost more than you can typically afford. Its a simple equation:

Net Price Expected Family Contribution = Deficit
