Evaluation According To Protocol
Patients were required to have pretreatment serological testing, lumbar puncture, neuro-psychological testing, and brain MRI. The antibody response to B. burgdorferi in serum was determined by indirect ELISA and Western blotting , and positive results were interpreted according to the CDC/ASTPHLD criteria . Spinal fluid was tested for total cells and protein, and concomitant serum and CSF samples were tested for intrathecal IgM, IgG, and IgA antibody production to B. burgdorferi by antibody capture enzyme assay, as previously described . A response in CSF that was> 1 times that in serum was defined as local synthesis of specific antibody in CSF. B. burgdorferi DNA was detected in CSF by PCR by use of 2 different primer-probe sets that target different regions of the plasmid DNA encoding outer-surface protein A of the spirochete, as previously described .
Routine brain MRI, without gadolinium enhancement, was performed in all patients. After August 1992, it became possible to perform quantitative single photon emission computed tomography of the brain, newly reported in one study to be of use in evaluation of Lyme encephalopathy . SPECT was not available when the study began, and only the last 7 patients entered into the study underwent SPECT imaging.

Are There Any Risks To Lyme Disease Tests
There is very little risk to having a blood test or a lumbar puncture. If you had a blood test, you may have slight pain or bruising at the spot where the needle was put in, but most symptoms go away quickly. If you had a lumbar puncture, you may have pain or tenderness in your back where the needle was inserted. You may also get a headache after the procedure.
Upstate Lyme Disease Doctor: Early Treatment Crucial But Diagnosis Can Be Tricky

Syracuse, N.Y. — Lyme disease is treatable when caught early, and most patients recover fully, said Dr. Kristopher Paolino, an infectious disease expert at Upstate Medical University.
“The thing with Lyme disease is, the earlier you catch it, the earlier you treat it, the better the outcomes,” Paolino said today. “There is concern that Lyme disease is a forever illness, and for the majority of people that’s not the case.”
Paolino spoke with discussion, answering questions about the spread of the disease, its symptoms and treatment, and the difficulty in diagnosing it.

If Lyme is caught in its early stages, a 10- to 21-day course of antibiotics are usually enough to kill the bacteria that causes Lyme. Left untreated, the bacteria can wreak havoc on the body, causing anything from painful joints to dangerous heart conditions. Even among those who are treated, 10 to 20 percent can suffer long-term problems, he said.
“There are people who have chronic symptoms, and those people are suffering,” Paolino said. “We need to do better to find ways to treat those patients.”
Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria spread by the bite of a black-legged, or deer, tick. About half of adult deer ticks in New York carry the bacteria.

Experts: Watch For Ticks This Summer As Lyme Disease Cases Rise
ROCHESTER, N.Y. While camping and hiking on the regions nature trails can be a great way to get outside, its important to remember how to do so safely.
Between the recent increase in tick bites and lyme disease cases on the rise, here are ways to prevent ticks from intruding on your next outdoor trip.
Dr. Alexandra Yamshchikov, Infectious Disease Physician at Rochester General Hospital, said that Lyme disease cases have been going up, with three times as many ticks being found in the community over the past ten years.
Lyme disease is something that weve been dealing with in this area for a while, Dr. Yamshchikov said. Nationwide theres about 500,000 cases that get diagnosed and treated each year, so its not uncommon. It is prevalent in this area and the number of cases in the northeast and Western New York is increasing.
She also said well forested areas or any location that has tall grass or bushes can have ticks, with more cases naturally being found during the summer months. This happens because the weather is warmer and the ticks are most active.
However, humans arent the only one getting bit.
Dogs can acquire ticks and they can also be susceptible to Lyme disease, so there is a very effective vaccine for dogs for Lyme disease, she said. And there are sort of vaccines in development for humans but its not at a stage where its readily available.
What Happens During Lyme Disease Testing
Lyme disease testing is usually done with your blood or cerebrospinal fluid.
For a Lyme disease blood test:
- A health care professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial. You may feel a little sting when the needle goes in or out. This usually takes less than five minutes.
If you have symptoms of Lyme disease affecting your nervous system, such as neck stiffness and numbness in hands or feet, you may need a test of cerebrospinal fluid . CSF is a clear liquid found in your brain and spinal cord. During this test, your CSF will be collected through a procedure called a lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap. During the procedure:

Diagnose Based On Symptoms
If you have a number of these symptoms, consider using the natural medicine approaches for each respective problem.
- Adrenal Insufficiency: fatigue, recurrent infections, poor recovery from infections, low blood sugar with shakiness and irritability relieved by eating, low blood pressure and dizziness on standing, afternoon crashing, and sugar cravings.

Before Treating Lyme Disease
Make Sure It Is Not Mold Toxin Illness
Mold toxin illness can look just like Lyme disease. Both trigger a reaction in the immune system that produces too many inflammation chemicals called cytokines, and cytokines cause most of the problems seen in both of these illnesses.
If your illness began while you were living or working in a building with obvious mold, I suggest treating for mold toxin illness first. I find correcting this issue may prevent the need to treat for Lyme disease. Once the mold toxins are removed, the immune system can keep Lyme under control. What To Do If You’re Bitten By A Tick
Unlike most bugs, ticks typically remain attached to your body after they bite you. In some cases, a new tick can be shaken off of your skin. However, if the tick has been on the skin for a bit longer, it may be more difficult to remove.
If you notice a tick that has latched to your skin, Dr. Allan says to attempt removal, but very carefully.
Get a good pair of fine point tweezers, get as close to the skin as possible, and grab hold of it. Then, pull slowly and steadily, applying constant pressure, to pull it out.
Do not grab the tick with your fingers and attempt to remove, as this can cause the tick to break, leaving some of it under your skin. If you experience any difficulty removing a tick, go to the nearest immediate care location for assistance.
If you are unsure how long the tick has been attached or are concerned about the transmission of Lyme disease, Dr. Allan recommends heading to immediate care after removing a tick.

Be Prepared For Your Doctor Visit
You can improve your chances of having an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment by providing your doctor with as much information as you can from the very start. The following checklist can be a good reminder of what to bring and discuss with your physician at your first visit:
- Have the tick tested and/or identified:If you were able to remove or find the tick that bit you, seal it in a glass or plastic container and consider sending it to IGeneX for testing. Additionally, photograph the tick and/or have the species identified ahead of time if possible. Knowing what kind of tick bit you and, in particular, whether it has tested positive for a tick-borne disease can be extremely helpful for your doctors diagnostic process. If the tick is still being tested when you see your doctor, you still may be able to start treatment based on the severity of your symptoms.
- Note possible exposure: Write down the places and dates that you believe you were exposed to ticksand the possible date and time of day when the engorged tick attached and fell off or was removed.

- Take pictures: Take pictures of any rashes or blisters that you may have noticed at the site of the tick bite or elsewhere on your body.
Why These Actions May Help
Sleep is often disturbed in chronic Lyme disease. Lack of adequate sleep worsens pain, increases fatigue, and suppresses the immune system. It appears that in response to infection, the excess inflammatory cytokines produced by the immune system decrease the output of sleep inducing hormones to the sleep centers of the brain. And lack of sleep increases cytokines. A restorative amount of sleep is seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Sleep in the few hours before midnight is most restorative.

C Antifungals For Overgrowth:
Do this if you have a yeast screening score of 140 or higher . When you complete treatment, then start yeast prevention antifungals as above. Use the supplement or prescription medicine option, but not both together.
Supplement:
- Herbal Combination. 2 pills 2 times a day. Common herbs found individually or mixed together include: Pau D’arco, caprylic acid, rosemary oil, thyme oil, garlic, and grapefruit seed extract.
Prescription Medicine:
Use both of the following together.
- Nystatin 500,000 IU 2 pills 2 times a day, and
- Fluconazole 200 mg 1 time daily for 30 days. Use in combination with nystatin to prevent drug resistance. This combination will take 30 days to get yeast under control.
