Deer ticks live in shady, moist areas at ground level. They will cling to tall grass, brush and shrubs, usually no more than 18-24 inches off the ground. They also live in lawns and gardens, especially at the edges of woods and around old stone walls.
Deer ticks cannot jump or fly, and do not drop onto passing people or animals. They get on humans and animals only by direct contact. Once a tick gets on the skin, it generally climbs upward until it reaches a protected area.

Lyme Disease At First Bite
The bite is as small as a pin poke, but tick-borne Lyme disease can impact a patients life for weeks, months or even years.
Dr. Steven Bock, who operates a private practice in Rhinebeck, has seen an upswing in the number of his patients in the last 29 years who suffer from Lyme disease. Nearly 75 percent of his patients have been treated for the illness, he said.
Lyme can then cause a range of symptoms, including headaches, joint pain or flu-like symptoms. Lyme can even affect cognitive functions, like loss of short term memory, Bock said.

Hundreds Attend Blood Clinic For New Lyme Disease Test
DELMAR, N.Y. Its a brand new test for Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses we told you about last year.
On Thursday, the first clinical study was held right in the Capital Region. Dozens were turned away and will have to attend future scheduled blood draw clinics because so many signed up to give blood.
More than 100 people got their blood drawn at the clinic. Some of them have never been tested for Lyme but maybe have symptoms, or some of them have been battling the disease for years.
Lyme disease is a complicated disease and many people experience an array of symptoms like Randy Fox, of Niskayuna, whos been battling it for years.
Besides the chronic fatigue, I have neuropathies which are either tingling, sharp pains, dull pains, numbness.
Fox gave blood at the Stram Center in Delmar with 150 other people from the Capital Region area. Its all part of a clinical study for a new test called LymeSeq. Its expected to diagnose 20 different strains of Lyme disease and other co-infections that ticks can carry and giving hope to those suffering.
To be able to diagnose and treat people earlier so that we dont have long lasting effects.
I have been bitten by ticks so I thought it would be a good idea, Adrie Fredenburg, of Canajoharie, said.
Fredenburg brought along her husband Steve too.
As long as its going to help, the study is worth it, Steve Fredenburg, of Canajoharie, said.

Be Prepared For Your Doctor Visit
You can improve your chances of having an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment by providing your doctor with as much information as you can from the very start. The following checklist can be a good reminder of what to bring and discuss with your physician at your first visit:
- Have the tick tested and/or identified:If you were able to remove or find the tick that bit you, seal it in a glass or plastic container and consider sending it to IGeneX for testing. Heidi Buono Wants Others To Have A Fighting Chance Against Lyme Disease She Is Raising Awareness About Lyme And Other Tick
Nine years ago, on Halloween night, Heidi Buono received the scare of her life.
Although she had suffered from migraines and achey stiff joints in the past, she had simply dismissed her ailments as signs she was getting older. But that Halloween, she suddenly experienced fatigue so overwhelming she was unable to get off her living room couch. As Buonos symptoms worsened in the days and weeks that followed, she underwent countless medical tests, but these all turned out negative. Upstate Lyme Disease Doctor: Early Treatment Crucial But Diagnosis Can Be Tricky

Syracuse, N.Y. — Lyme disease is treatable when caught early, and most patients recover fully, said Dr. Kristopher Paolino, an infectious disease expert at Upstate Medical University.
“The thing with Lyme disease is, the earlier you catch it, the earlier you treat it, the better the outcomes,” Paolino said today. “There is concern that Lyme disease is a forever illness, and for the majority of people that’s not the case.”
Paolino spoke with discussion, answering questions about the spread of the disease, its symptoms and treatment, and the difficulty in diagnosing it.

If Lyme is caught in its early stages, a 10- to 21-day course of antibiotics are usually enough to kill the bacteria that causes Lyme. Left untreated, the bacteria can wreak havoc on the body, causing anything from painful joints to dangerous heart conditions. Even among those who are treated, 10 to 20 percent can suffer long-term problems, he said.
“There are people who have chronic symptoms, and those people are suffering,” Paolino said. “We need to do better to find ways to treat those patients.”
Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria spread by the bite of a black-legged, or deer, tick. About half of adult deer ticks in New York carry the bacteria.
